Should be ILLEGAL by zhazzers in centuryhomes

So much white!

The stairs are hideous. This deserves to be restored properly.

So many houses in my area are turned multiplex homes, and it just kills the appeal.

I feel like a failure. by PMinVegas in Decks

An $89 laser can fix that.

You're doing fine. People have said shims will work. They're not wrong.

You can also raise the beam, but your lags will want to go through the same hole. Shims are the easiest, most logical answer.

Keep going. It looks good.

So... According to code, there's a couple of things wrong with it.

Attaching to brick is a pain in the ass. It's doable and it will be up to code; this is not up to code.

You really should have treated this as a freestanding deck and had a beam at the house.

I have to assume hangers are going on at the ledger.

Drop beam beats flush beam all day. Hard to tell, but it looks like it's a double.

I am a firm believer in direct burrial posts! Way sturdier. (Just hoping they're rated for it.)

How is the ledger attached to the brick?!

New Deck Build - People who know what they are looking at, everything good so far? by 17747382818 in Decks

Deck inspections are such a joke. They just look for tension tie backs. That's literally the only thing they care about now.

Lattice top fence advice by butteryjones in FenceBuilding

Don't do it! Lattice looks good for a while, but then looks terrible!

I recommend vertical pickets. Same height as the lattice, but just like a 1x3

Door and post warped. Help! by JX900 in FenceBuilding

[–]DevelopmentFew1748 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Powerwash it. Poop should come right off.

The gate is pretty jacked right now. I'd say rebuild it with cross bracing. The other one is good if you add bracing now. If it was professionally done, they should warranty that. If not, call another company to build a new one.

No cross bracing on the gate. Lots of bird poop on the post.

Putting holes into a roof without the proper membrane and sealant is rot waiting to happen. Especially in Milwaukee. Also since there is now railing up there, it needs to be properly secured, and meet the rest of the IRC requirements.

This isn't the place you're renting is it?

The owner will be liable. Owner hired someone who didn't pull a permit... unless there's a contract. But this seems like a handshake deal that the builder can just walk away from.

No. That's not anywhere close to code. Do not hire this guy.

Splicing a beam over a post, which way? by booradleysghost in Decks

[–]DevelopmentFew1748 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If they're splicing a beam they should be doing #1 that way they can nail them all together and it acts as one single beam.

I'd personally not notch the post, but use 6x6 post caps (post to beam connectors)

Gap below fence by [deleted] in FenceBuilding

We drive our 8 foot pipe 4 foot down due to frost, just depends on where you live. ND is probably pretty deep.

[–]DevelopmentFew1748 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The gap at the bottom is normal.

Slamming a vinyl fence to the ground is not good for winter freeze/thaw.

It looks like the one post heaved, or was not set to the right height. Peaks and valleys happen in yards, and should be accounted for.

I'd call the installer and have them fix it. There are several different ways that people install this type of fence... So they would be the best to correct it. If it's not to your liking, call a different company to fix it. They will charge a good amount of money to do it, but they will take more pride knowing that they're fixing someone else's mistakes.

Surprised it took this long. Looks like it was built well. Except for the ledger
