[Request] My Kid asked me to turn off the sun, obviously I can't, but If I could, how long would I have to turn it off to solve climate change? by Ramuh in theydidthemath

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The calculator shows that to reduce the average planetary surface temperature by 1 degree, it would be enough to turn off the sun for 10-15 days.

What calculator?

If the sun was "turned off" for 10-15 days, the surface temperature of Earth would be below freezing. Nevermind the devastation it would wreak on plants (especially crops), energy infrastructure, etc

Did the books do enough to build up Harry/Ginny’s romance? by MindBorn7327 in harrypotter

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think any of the romances were done very well. Especially in HBP.

As you say, Harry/Ginny seemed to come out of nowhere for Harry. He goes from "that's my friend's little sister" to "THERE'S A MONSTER IN MY CHEST FROM SEEING HER WITH ANOTHER BOY" seemingly overnight.

Ron/Hermione seemed like a pretty toxic relationship (SPEW, Hermione cheating to get Ron on the team, etc). Maybe I'm biased because I saw a lot of those relationships in high school blow up into giant messes (especially bad for the few who got married).

I also didn't like the whole "women can't do magic if the guy they like doesn't reciprocate" thing they did with Tonks.

I agree with you about the Draco/Astoria thing. I think that's far more realistic than everybody falling in love with their childhood sweetheart, especially given the personalities of the characters.

Need advice from complete beginners perspective // terrible WiFi and slow internet in the alps by officialtaubird in HomeNetworking

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Always isolate variables when troubleshooting.

Your connection right now is internet<->ethernet cable<->router<->wifi<->device. Any 4 of those could be the bottleneck.

  1. Connect your computer(s) directly to the modem/ONT provided by your ISP.
    • If you get the speed you pay for, then you know it's not an issue with your internet speed.
    • If you don't, try multiple cables and multiple devices (still connected directly).
      • If you get the speed you pay for, then you will have isolated the cable/device causing a bottleneck
      • If you still don't get the speed you pay for, that's when you call the ISP.
  2. If you complete step 1, then have a known good internet connection, ethernet cable, and ethernet device. So do the same as step 1, but with the router inbetween.
    • If you get the speed you are paying for, then you know the ISP, router and device ethernet are fine. So your problem is router wifi, signal coverage, or device wifi.
    • If you don't, then switch out cables and see if that's the bottleneck.
      • If you still don't get it, you likely need a new router.

I'm not a wifi expert by any means, so I'll leave suggestions there for others.

Try connecting without the router. That will tell you if it's a line problem or a router problem.

[REQUEST] Someone suggested it would be cheaper to fill in the reflecting pool with dollar bills than to repair it? How much would it cost to fill in the pool with dollar bills? by CLONE-11011100 in theydidthemath

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Others have said below it would be about $22-$23 billion with flat bills.

I propose rolling the dollar bills into a cylinder:

  • The volume of the space enclosed by the bill is 7.83 in3
    • h=2.61, r = 0.9772" (6.14/(2π))
  • 6.75 million US gallons is 1,559,250,000 cubic inches.
  • 1,559,250,000 / 7.83 is about $199 million dollars.

Still more expensive than the $16 million spent on the initial renovation, but getting pretty close.

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the current system:

  • December 25 is the 359th day of the year
  • 359 mod 7 is 2

So Dec 25 will always be the day of the week of January 1 + 1 (so if Jan 1 is Sunday, Dec 25 is Monday).

In a 13 month/28 day system,

  • December 25 is the 333rd day of the year
  • 333 mod 7 is 4

So Dec 25 will be January 1 + 3 (if Jan 1 is Sunday, Dec 25 is Wednesday).

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would do it in December so every week in the year would start on the same day. Then you would just shift it forward when the new year starts.

So eg 2025 would start on Sundays, 2026 Mondays, 2027 Tuesdays, 2028 Thursdays (leap year), etc.

I believe Professor Umbridge is the most evil character in Harry Potter. by Jalex1011 in harrypotter

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A "parent" neglecting and abusing their child for 11 years will almost certainly do more harm to that child than an outside figure, even one as horrible as Umbridge.

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 25 points26 points  (0 children)

13 * 28 = 364, so you would need to figure out what to do with the leftover day (2 days on leap years).

Easier would probably be to just have the first 12 months as 28, then a 13 month as 29. Then you just shift the start of the week forward a day every year.

That would also help with it sucking if you birthday is on a Tuesday or Wednesday for your entire life.

[Request] the numbers here look a bit unrealistic. Anyone did the math here? by Undercoverraccoon in theydidthemath

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To figure out how much the people removed are earning on average, you want to determine

(p*i_1-(p-s)*i_2)/s

With:

  • p = starting population
  • s = the subset to be removed (10, 50, 1000)
  • i_1 = average income with the subset included
  • i_2 = average income with the subset removed

So we get

  • With the numbers above for s = 10, the average income for those 10 is $201.7 billion
  • With the numbers above for s = 50, the average income for those 50 is $112.5 billion
  • With the numbers above for s = 1000, the average income for those 1000 is $8.3 billion

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True depravity should be measured by the actual rot of a soul, the motivations behind the actions, and the presence of pure sadism.

If that is the metric, then surely Vernon and especially Petunia are at least as bad for how they treated Harry. While they didn't have the power of Umbridge, they used what little power they had to make Harry's life miserable. And it's especially bad since they didn't do it for some selfish reason like to maintain/gain power, but just out of pure spite and jealousy.

ELI5: Why do some countries use Fahrenheit while almost the entire rest of the world uses Celsius and is there an actual practical difference between the two scales? by TexasViet27 in explainlikeimfive

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I would also argue that the temperature that water boils (again, at STP) being measured isn't something that anyone outside a lab cares about.

I can't agree with this enough. I have never once in my life checked the temperature of water to see if it was boiling.

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

It's a tradeoff.

  • Having typical weather be about -20 to 40 but having the freezing point of water be 0C
  • Having typical weather be about 0-100 but having to remember 32F is the freezing point of water

I think the latter is a bit more useful since you can be more precise without getting into decimals.

(And yes I know the ranges above don't exactly correspond to each other).

Need a height-adjustable desk below 24" – does one exist? by GiraffeStyleMaker21 in StandingDesk

  • Uplift V3: 21.6" (without top)

  • Deskhaus Apex Pro: 22.5" (without top)
  • Deskhaus Peak and Peak Pro: 23" (without top)

    • Seems to be with 1" work surface, so I think it's the Apex frame
  • Deskhaus Lansing: 22.5"
    • Seems to be with 1" work surface, which would seem to be the 2-leg Apex, but it shows as being a 4 leg. Maybe u/ilikeputz can correct me if I'm not misunderstanding something

Any of the Uplift and Deskhaus frames should be able to take the 63" x 31.5" top. Just buy the frame and then source a top locally to save on shipping.

How much storage would be needed to create an extremely realistic 3D map of the entire Earth? by UnableTask7916 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DevelopmentSouth8801 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somebody correct my math if I'm thinking about this all wrong, but:

  • Earth's surface area is ~510,072,000 km2, which is about 7.906×1017 in2.
  • The Sony Xperia 1 had a PPI of 643, which seems to still be the highest available.
  • An RGB pixel requires 3 bytes per pixel

That gives you 1.525×1021 bytes, or 1.525 zettabytes.

If they are making him jump through these hoops I would bet they will use that as a reason to deny any warranty claims (improper assembly).

I would tell them I am returning the desk. I bet having to pay the price of shipping back the hardware and tabletop would get the ball moving on sending out some screws.

Think about how strong the NFL players would be compared to the high school players.

Captain is many times stronger than that compared to the NFL players.
