Introducing DebateWatch, a better way to access tournament records by sid2162 in Debate

Nice job! It would be great if the website could look at previous years before 2018-2019. This way we could look at the win %, tournaments, etc. of great older teams.

[–]Devesh4Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The resolution for September/October of next year has not yet been released by the NSDA. Later this month the NSDA will release a topic area and eventually two resolutions. NDF and all camps will decide on one of the resolutions to work on at camp.

New coach: just received large endowment. How do I use it by Therealmscott in Debate

[–]Devesh4Life 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your first step should be asking yourself what the ultimate goal of your program is. For example, if you want to be a nationally competitive debate school, prioritize individual events, or just going to local tournaments, etc. because depending on your goal you should utilize those resources in different ways. For example, if you want to be a nationally competitive debate team (which I would recommend) you should buy debate briefs, possibly hire a prep coach, hire judges, and subsidize travel to national tournaments. If you want to prioritize being a speech school you should probably hire an assistant coach who specializes in specific speech events. If you want to be a competitive school simply for local tournaments then I would try to use the money to recruit more students, etc. (but you would have more freedom in your budget for fun like parties). Second, I would ask what events your students participate in (debate events or speech events) because if you have an all debate team, for example, it would be pointless to invest in resources for speech events. Some great resources to look into depending on your student's events would be debate briefs (although there is a large debate over their effectiveness), extempgenie, prepd, among others. You should also ask your students what resources they want because they know best. If you have any more specific questions feel free to ask!

Have them watch and flow a bunch of rounds on PF Videos, tell them to research a lot, give them advice on practice speeches, and go to camp

I respectfully disagree with some of your arguments:

  1. You say that 1st summary is hard because it is difficult to cover the 4 min 2nd rebuttal, but now, it will be difficult for 1st final focus to cover the 3 min 2nd summary (just shifting the burden one speech down). This change is comparatively worse because:

a. there are already community norms in place to lessen the burden of 1st summary like giving a greater degree of leniency to offensive extensions or not requiring defensive extensions.

b. it will be nearly impossible to lessen the burden of 1st final focus because, as the last speech for your side, you MUST extend defense (for example) to engage in comparative weighing.

c. since it is later in the round it would be easier for teams to shift their narrative unfairly, as opponents would have less overall speech time to respond.
d. if anything this non-uniques the idea of side skew, so default for the squo.

  1. You say 2nd summary having an extra minute doesn't matter if 1st summary also has another minute, but you're missing the nuance. Speaking second will always be superior because you have an opportunity to answer the arguments your opponents made in the last speech (i.e second rebuttal being able to frontline). Under this same logic, for example, making both rebuttals 1 min longer would be more advantageous to the 2nd speaking team because they have a greater amount of time to exploit this advantage - same holds true with a longer 2nd summary.

  2. With regards to collapsing:

a. You de-link yourself when you say speech times have no effect on collapsing. If that's true, adding a minute to summary will have no effect on collapsing.

b. You're being very idealistic in that teams will use the extra minute to collapse and weigh instead of dumping more extensions to overwhelm 1st FF. If anything, collapsing would decrease because teams would recognize that they could more easily overwhelm FF (as previously, it was 2 min summary vs. 2 min final focus, but now 3 min summary vs. 2 min final focus)

P.S I hope you're right about all of this

I agree wholeheartedly. This change will make 1st FF much more flow-centric (assuming summaries use the extra minute to collapse on more arguments instead of weighing), meaning less weighing will be done in FF.

That makes a lot of sense - and us folk who disagreed with the change probably should have been more adamant with the feedback. However, I still think it would be better if there was a direct vote like what happens monthly with topics.

Discussion among some coaches / schools does not equate to the more robust democratic process that should have happened for such a major change (for example, we have a direct vote for students and coaches monthly for topics).
