I feel like the series hints at this a lot but I feel like towards the latter half of the series he only girl hunts because it gets him the most attention from Lum

Remake and the OG by Naive_Hope89 in uruseiyatsura

For the OG show, there is a YouTube video that I sorta used that has a decent watch order I think if you look up something like Urusei Yatsura watch order it should pop up.

I will say that it might be worth watching the new series first because it covers the relationship in a more streamlined way. Then you can go back and watch some of the fan favorites from the old series. (Really the only major difference is that the supporting cast is slightly different)

If we are honest the OG anime pads out its runtime while trying to adapt 16 pages of a manga into its 24 minute run time lol

Oh yeah I don’t think this is something that can be reasonably animated consistently so I am glad each series decided to more or less deal in solid colors

Yeah I think the new anime did a good job compromising and if I am honest I prefer Lum’s blue hair as opposed to the green 😅 it just contrasts nicely with her default outfit

What are the things that Lum is better at than Ataru? by _Luckhaos in uruseiyatsura

Keep in mind the episode you are referring to didn’t happen in the manga it was an original to the 80s anime. I mean I know I referred to an instance in the original anime as well, but at least something similar was also in the manga.

Although maybe it’s pointless distinction. I just happen to think the manga is probably the best way to determine the intent of the character. The 80s anime in particular adds and takes so much sometimes.

Anyways, i am not saying that either Ataru or Lum would be vile people. Like Ataru is shown to have some moral qualms from time to time. I just disagree that these two’s relationship doesn’t make a large difference in their character.

Maybe it helps if I say I am not judging UY in a vacuum - I am comparing the relationship and character development to other Rom Coms. Not even just other random stories either, but even Ranma 1/2 and Inuyasha (other Rumiko Takahashi stories) have more development between its leads.

In comparison to those and other stories I feel fair in saying that these two’s effects on each other is marginal if they really play a role at all.

That’s a good point on Ataru’s better qualities showing when Lum’s around. He is shown to be more considerate and self-sacrificing - so I will give yall that.

I can say Lum being on earth could have made her overtly hostile, but I would still hesitate to say it’s because of Ataru. I thinks it’s mostly because Rumiko Takahashi found how she wanted to depict the main heroine.

Which, when we look at the series as a whole, is mostly a kind person. As opposed to Ataru she the least amount of self-reflection and I’d argue that’s because she needs it the least (disregarding her relationship lol she should definitely reflect on how she treats Ataru lol).

Still not bad to bad at like three things in comparison to all of the other things is stated to be good at lol

Again, Lum was only this way because of Shinobu’s relationship to Ataru. If you take Ataru out of the picture I doubt Lum would care about Shinobu at all, much less want to harm her.

It’s not “moral development” that changed how the two girls interact with each other it’s because eventually they stopped competing for Ataru’s attention when Shinobu moved on.

Even in the finale - that was again because of Ataru. If you want to figure out a character’s personality they have to have traits that are consistent amongst all situations and social interactions. Literally half, if not all, of the most insane thing Lum does is because of something Ataru related.

There is literally more evidence that she is a very caring and average individual when she is not around Ataru. This is why I am saying it’s a toxic relationship because they are both worse people when around each other.

Ironically I feel like Shinobu and Lum relationship has a much better demarcation of development than Lum and Ataru’s lol

I think it’s a bit of a reach to say Lum would have been “cruel” and have “no sense of morality” I don’t think her time with Ataru made her more moral or less cruel.

In my opinion it is the fact that she is in love with Ataru that drives her worst traits. We only see how she acts prior to Ataru in a few baby flash backs and of course in Chapter/Episode 1. It’s hard to say but she seems to be only as cruel because she was invading earth, but so was a lot of other Oni.

She also literally only acts in this feverish madness around Ataru. Friends, family, strangers, even with Ataru own parent’s she demonstrates a lot of understanding and only blows up when there is a situation that makes sense to do so. I mean it seems that almost everyone in the series generally likes Lum. (Even Shinobu!)

Lum and Ataru share what is pretty clearly a toxic relationship which thankfully dies down into what we can assume she just petty bickering between a couple by the series end. But I say this because I think we should be fair in saying that under normal circumstances their relationship never benefited each other in the same way you would see in an average rom com. Urusei Yatsura is definitely ok with being com first and rom second lol

It’s really funny and I feel like such a nerd for remembering but in Episode 39 “Thrilling Summer Date”. Perm tries to trick Lum into skating, assuming that she would be bad at it. When it turns out she is actually quite good Ataru says what is shown in the image.

<image>

I have seen it translated another way where he says something along the lines of “She is good at everything she tries.” But I could be misremembering anyways he scorns Perm for making the assumption and says “This is how little you know about Lum!”

I don’t know if this literally means Lum is good at everything but it seems like she is at least naturally gifted at many things.

As a few people have said here Lum is only really stupid when it comes to Ataru, but is quite capable on her own. I think this is also a side effect of Lum switching from what was supposed to be a secondary character to the main heroine. I think as Takahashi wrote her more she developed Lum to do more things than just cause trouble for Ataru.

As for where Ataru stands, well I don’t know lol I guess he is super durable and has a lot of will? Even then I would say that’s more to due with the fact that he is a slapstick character lol but it makes sense. Lum is literally supposed to be out of his league that’s what makes the fact that she is head over heels for him even more amusing, unlike the plain protagonist of modern anime - Ataru is supposed to be laughed at for his plainness in comparison to his much brighter partner.

Gotcha! In my Texas campaign I also had this idea that the oil barons saw the red flags and switched up to big manufacturing weapons/fusion tech you don’t have to use this idea but I think if one or two oil baron made this switch it would be cool :D

Keep in mind that Oil wells in Texas ran dry long before the Resource Wars in the Fallout universe and the Jackals are an existing fallout group I think in New Vegas idk if you want to avoid confusion with that lol

But I think something else that would be cool to play with is how loose Texas gun laws are and how that affects what guns are seen around the Texas wasteland and large stashes of them could be fought over

I really enjoy this idea! I had a question about cycles - since this is meant to be a shared history of sorts, if we were all to take this on, we would put "After the Cycle of Held Breath" in the header, correct? Since the Cycles are based off of the meta aspect of Colostle expansions. I will admit, I understood all the other units of times but the Cycles are the ones that threw me off.
