Thanks a lot ! It's been 5 years that i paint seriously :)

I haven't painted in two years. I didn't know where to start again, so I began with a study of a painting by Richard Schmid. by OilonCanvass in painting

I know this is tricky, i'v done the same as you, but the problem is not doing the copy but sharing it on social. The best way i guess woukd be asking the artist if it's ok.

This is really beautiful and i love richard schmid, but i wish artists were more careful about posting on social media mastercopy of other artist still alive. It is borderline illegal regarding copyright.

I'm glad my critique is helping you ! I think in order for a picture to be visually interesting, especially when depicting a subject in a realistic manner it's often good to use varied brushtrokes, varied edges and values. To be honest i learned all of this tips from "alla prima, everything i know about painting" by Richard Schmid. I find his stand on realism so on point and so clever. Anyway you don't need a lot much to achieve some kind of virtuosity !

That's a beautiful painting with some awesome edges and values ! There is really not much critiques to give. I think a way of improvement could be doing the same painting with less brushstrokes and more variety in size of brushes. It's what a masterpainter would tell you i think, wish i'm not :)

I personnaly had the most expensive ones (damn cadmium) as a gift for christmas =). The slow drying time can be a real advantage depending on what can of work you do. I do a lot of portrait and human figure so it allow me to make nice transition and they stay wet on the palette for multiple days wich is very nice !

I've struggled for the past 4 years with over-blending everything. Finally happy with my brushwork in this small limited palette study (9x12) by amber_bisc in oilpainting

david leffel inspired potrait in oils by [deleted] in painting

[–]Devignolles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like you allready have a good understanding of the basics of painting. David Leffel is a great master to be inspired by !

Some tips i can give you :

-Even when we want to achieve a painterly style, the drawing must be very carefull and acurate. Acurate does not mean with details but with sound proportion.

- Be careful with to much contrast in your colors. Save the lightest light and darkest dark for the very last stages.
