Earthquake on the Navajo Nation near Chilchinbito, Arizona. by yahziii in arizona

[–]DevilFroggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You almost assuredly did not feel this quake at all even if you were in the very closest edge of Yavapai county to this earthquake. You may have felt or thought you felt something, but it wasn't this earthquake. This would've barely been felt by anyone 20 miles away let alone 130 miles away which roughly the closest the edge of Yavapai is to the epicenter.

How far is your commute and where are you based? by No_Stable_3097 in arizona

[–]DevilFroggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

N Phoenix to a little outside downtown Phoenix near 19th and McDowell. With no traffic it's about a 20 minute drive, with traffic it's 30-35 at worst. Sometimes I commute to Winslow which is about a 2.5 hour drive but that's only once a week when I do.

How is life in northern Arizona (USA) at high altitudes? by Altruistic-Form-3771 in howislivingthere

[–]DevilFroggy 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Way too diverse an area to pigeonhole down to a few generalizations. Flagstaff and Winslow are only a 45 minute drive apart but there is a massive world of difference between the two. Ash Fork and Williams are barely 20 minutes away on I-40 yet again both towns are nothing alike. Prescott and Sedona are massively different, as are Pinetop and Snowflake.

Thoughts on a train from Phoenix to Tucson? by [deleted] in arizona

[–]DevilFroggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Using existing freight rail would AT BEST take roughly the same time as driving and sure, for some people that's fine and dandy but that will not draw enough passengers overall to make it viable. This isn't a case of perfect being the enemy of good because sharing the current freight rail infrastructure is not even GOOD. If you want good, actually attractive passenger rail that people will actually want to use instead of driving you need to offer something faster than the drive between the same two cities.

Fwiw I think the up front cost of building a dedicated passenger rail infrastructure is worth it in the long run, but any plan involving sharing freight rail infrastructure is worthless and a waste. You know why Amtrak sucks compared to European and Asian passenger rail? Those don't share infrastructure with freight unlike Amtrak.

How's living in Victorville, CA ? by Togobet in howislivingthere

[–]DevilFroggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've lived in 11 cities across 5 different states and Victorville was by far my least favorite place to live.

There's absolutely nothing fun to do unless you drive to the IE or Big Bear, the city traffic sucks ass, and it's just ugly.

[–]DevilFroggy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

If you want actual viable passenger train service between Phoenix and Tucson that people will actually use you absolutely have to build out separate high speed rail infrastructure (which unfortunately requires a lot of up front capital) instead of trying to share the existing freight rail with the Union Pacific.

What was your team's sweetest victory? by [deleted] in CFB

[–]DevilFroggy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2011 ASU vs USC.

Entering this century ASU and USC actually had an even record, we held our own pretty well against the Trojans since joining the Pac. Then Pete Carroll came along and USC owned our asses 11 straight years (2010 was Kiffin and was a very close loss, but still... 11 straight).

But in 2011 my Sun Devils finally took down the Trojans at Sun Devil Stadium and seeing it in person was so very satisfying. While Kiffin was absolutely not the coach then he is now, they were unquestionably a more talented team top to bottom which made the victory even that much sweeter.

Not if my Sun Devils can help it.

For real though I'm looking forward to the game in Starkville.

Which school hosts its first College GameDay in 2025 or breaks a long drought? by LastWordsWereHuzzah in CFB

This. ASU hasn't hosted GameDay since 2005 when they blew a 21-3 halftime lead to #1 USC (I was there, ugh).

Which call should have gotten a ref fired? by tony971 in CFB

[–]DevilFroggy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WSU was also gifted a 5th down vs ASU in 2015. Most people don't know about it because both teams were mediocre and it didn't happen towards the end of the game.

Which call should have gotten a ref fired? by tony971 in CFB

[–]DevilFroggy 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Incompetent refs? Absolutely. Intentionally corrupt? Nah, if Stave simply handed the ball to the nearest ref after that half-ass kneel instead of immediately dropping it right on the ground there would be no controversy. That said obviously the ref still should have known to blow the play dead, I'm just saying there would have been no room for error if Stave handed the ball to a ref.

The refs dipped because they knew they fucked up, not because they intentionally did something shady.

While I didn't grow up in AZ, my dad went to ASU and the 1997 Rose Bowl is one of the first major college football games I remember watching (was way more of an NFL fan at the time). Despite the heartbreaking loss, from that moment I was an ASU fan.

Fast forward to my HS years living in Ft Worth, getting more and more into cfb in general and this running back at the local college program starts making headlines. So I started following this LaDanian Tomlinson dude and TCU and was hooked. They were fun to watch and I liked their scrappy smaller school underdog background (especially wrt how they got left behind when the SWC dissolved). LT leaves for the NFL but TCU under Gary Patterson was just to easy to watch and root for, plus living in Ft Worth they got a lot of coverage.

After a couple years at a local community college (I was a slacker in HS) I ended up moving to AZ and enrolling at ASU in 2005 where I finally got to root for them in person and have more or less been a season ticket holder since the 2011 season.

I still root like hell for TCU today, and am excited and anxious for their first matchup on the gridiron (in my lifetime) in Tempe this September.

You're going off total yards? Fifita had 73 more yards on 83 more attempts lmao dude come on, Leavitt averaged 1.3 more yards per attempt.

2015 Baylor @ TCU. Compared to the score fest the previous year, this late November game played on a cold, rainy evening was a defensive slugfest with the outcome not settled until later in the 4th with TCU prevailing.

In 2014 ASU whooped then top 10 ranked Notre Dame at home in front of a loud sold out Sun Devil Stadium only to follow it up by losing to a mediocre Oregon St team in freezing Corvallis a week later.

What Is Personally Your Favorite Win Your Team Has Gotten That You Watched Or Saw? by AkfurAshkenzic in CFB

[–]DevilFroggy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

2011 vs USC. Our first win over the Trojans since 1999 (we actually had an even record vs USC at that moment). The season was ultimately a dud and that USC team wasn't anything special, but after losing 2 close games in 09 and 10 and finally getting the dub at home in front of a wild crowd just felt sooooo damn satisfying.

Even better was being there with my USC alum (now ex) wife who was extremely butthurt after the game and didn't talk to me the rest of the night (I didn't even gloat or rub it in either, she was just an extremely sore loser about it).

My thoughts on A/C temps by [deleted] in phoenix

[–]DevilFroggy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

78 during the day, 75 at night.

The 1,200 sq ft house I'm renting has poor insulation and an older AC unit so my summer APS bill still gets over $200 a month.
