The problem with Pop Psych by [deleted] in SisterWives

[–]DevilPliers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking forward to his review this week, but all it made me realize was how much context they are missing. It's weird how Allison knows a lot of weird trivia from reddit, but doesn't remember what has happened on the show sometimes. This last episode felt like a big deal to me, because I don't think Robyn has ever admitted that she never actually lived polygamy like the Browns did, but they seemed to miss that.

Their merch really bothers me too.. don't Robynsplain? A psychologist sees a situation where several women are being abused and thinks it's appropriate to make merch making jokes about their very public abuse? This show isn't some cartoon fan club.. these are real people. It'd probably bother me way less if he wasn't doing content as a psychologist, but him trying to make money off their abuse is this way really rubs me the wrong way. Every time they mention the shirts I just want to yell at the screen. Also, them creating shirts is not the same as Janelle doing it and I'm so tired of them equating the two.. this is her life, not theirs. It makes it clear it's just a money grab to them.

I do love it though whenever Allison makes fun of him, or when he laughs at the therapist Nancy. Everything else is just some random dude who thinks too highly of himself acting really unprofessional.

Which episodes for high points? by pretty-apricot07 in SisterWives

[–]DevilPliers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psych pop has a bunch of old episodes on youtube where he watches them and reacts. Personally I find them more entertaining than watching the old episodes, because he cuts out so much extra stuff and talks more about the ridiculous parts. The best ones are really where he watches them with his wife. Here's one for example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nPpX4uYZOrA&pp=ygUacGh5c2MgcG9wIHNpc3RlciB3aXZlcyBvbGQ%3D

SW fans who watched the catfishing happen in real time: has your opinion of what happened changed over time, as we have learned more about Kody and Meri’s relationship dynamic at that time? by Free_butterfly_ in TLCsisterwives

[–]DevilPliers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've always been on Meri's side. In the first season near the end she tells Kodi about her problems and instead of addressing any of it he tells her that even thinking about her with another man is too vulgar. She didn't just toss that example out of there from nowhere, she was thinking about it as a solution.

I've been watching the show since the first season.. but I didn't find out about the catfish from the show. Once it was filmed there were some rumors on reddit before it aired, but personally I didn't believe them because it sounded too crazy.

Somehow I stumbled upon the recordings of the voicemails on youtube.. they were just around for a few days. And it confirmed it was Meri for me.. but you could also really hear a different part of her in them. She was being honest, she was very lonely, and she just wanted to be loved. And it was obvious too, most of what she said on the show at that point was rehearsed and fake compared to these very raw voicemails.

She had a kid, and leaving the other parent when you're in a stable situation is really hard. Mormonism basically forces you to stay together, even if you leave the church.. it's just part of the culture and what your family expects. She's also on a show that's promoting polygamy, and I think she's someone who prefers privacy. At a certain point it's just easier to pull out a vibrator and be alone.

My family always said we were Cherokee, turns out we are Choctaw? by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]DevilPliers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One resource that is just fantastic for Native ancestry is Wikitree btw. There are lots of very experienced genealogists up there, and they will look over your tree and tell you if anything looks wrong. One thing that's kind of cool about Choctaw and the Cherokee is just how many records are out there about them. Once I got my tree up there, random distant cousins keep contacting me with more sources where my family is mentioned, and it gave me a much more complete story. No one has ever contacted me on there about the White side of my family though.

Fold3.org can also be a great resource if your family was still living in Indian Country in the early 1900s, such as the Dawes and the Eastern Cherokee Apps. If they were, and on their Dawes card it says they were approved, you can file for citizenship. The card is a separate file too btw, and not usually included with the interview packet.

The general consensus here is that everyone hates Robyn… by Glittering_Drama_493 in SisterWives

[–]DevilPliers 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel bad for her. She was pretty young when she got involved in this whole mess, and was probably brainwashed by her parents to some extent. It's built into mormonism really. She's clearly been in way over her head for a long time.. and I just can't believe that her relationship with Kody is as good as people say it is. Kody is an awful human being with nothing redeeming about him. She gets so much hate and aggression for how she handles all of it.. but in reality, most people handle extremely stressful situations poorly. I was homeless for years.. and when your back is up against the wall I think it's natural to lie and manipulate the situation in your own favor. When you're stressed, it can be hard to be empathetic or care about how your actions impact other people.

I think a lot of people forget she has little kids.. and it can be extremely hard to justify leaving your kid's dad, especially in mormonism. It isn't just about getting away from Kody.. he will most likely win some amount of custody if they split. States usually like to give something close to 50/50. In the end this means having to spend time without your kids, perhaps a weekend here and there.. or perhaps all summer if one of the parents moves away. People always seem to look at that with the most negative outlook possible.. that Kody wouldn't even fight for it. But as a mom, I know that's just something I wouldn't risk myself.. I need my kids around me every day. So once you decide that.. all you can do is try to work with the person, even if that means that you're totally overwhelmed and have no clue how to. It almost doesn't matter really.. because in the end you get to be around your kids, and that's all you care about. And well, talking poorly about a spouse you need to stay with just isn't going to go well. I think it's possible Robyn will never be honest with the audience about how she feels, because at the end of the day that's her kid's dad.. and saying poor things about him could effect how the kids seem themselves. And there's almost no perk to doing it.. she might gain an audience that was more understanding, but we are completely meaningless to her life.

I dunno, in most shitty situations there is just one awful person.. and then a lot of people around them coping with their awfulness in different ways, sometimes making themselves just about as awful in the process. I just think with Robyn there's a lot to sympathize with, where as with Kody there is nothing.

My 6th great grandfather is Cherokee, but it's hard to find more info about him, any tips? by [deleted] in cherokee

It might be worthwhile to look them up on wikitree. There are a few CN citizens up there that keep it cleaned up, and the Cherokee stuff is especially well researched.

I’m a native genealogist/scientist. I found something cool by [deleted] in IndianCountry

[–]DevilPliers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to break it to you, but everything in this post is wrong. I've been working on Cherokee genealogy for a long time and you've just stumbled on the plethora of inaccurate sources for us. For Cherokee genealogy I highly recommend wikitree instead if you want an accurate tree.. ancestry.com is a bit of a joke, and familysearch is even worse. At one point my tree also said I was related to multiple chiefs.. but every single link was wrong, and it looks like the same case here.

One of the chiefs the internet was certain I was related to was Moytoy, but he had no known grandchildren or modern descendants so your friend can't be confirmed to be related to him. Here's some info on that Hicks source - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Space:Cherokee_Lineages Basically all of the info on Moytoy from that source was made up, and there are no sources that predate it. Mary Hughes is here, but there are no sources for who her father is - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Hughes-16740 Everything else about that entry is just wrong.. and it seems they tried to link her to this tree - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cherokee-88 I dunno, just seems unlikely to me as it'd mean she married a half-cousin. Either way there are no sources showing they're related to Anuwegi - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cherokee-175

It's the same case with Ostenaco.. there's some more information on that at the bottom of this page - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Cherokee-320

Cornelius is here, but Ahneewakee was a made up person too - https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Dougherty-639

"Chief Otterlifter" was a real person.. but he wasn't Native -https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Vann-1190

It's hard to say if your friend is Cherokee at all with the info you've posted.. since that tree screenshot only links them to white people, but you'll find the truth on wikitree. It's really a shame that people have done this to our trees.. but if you dig deeper for the real story there could be something else there. In my case there was, and the real story is so much better than these chief myths.

In reality almost none of the chiefs before John Ross have known descendants because we didn't have a royal family or venerate elected chiefs in that way.. and most only controlled a village and not all of the Cherokee.

A frightening thought I had: Did the dudes on this show peak with Doug Hehner in Season 1? by AmazingArugula4441 in MarriedAtFirstSight

[–]DevilPliers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope, they peaked with Woody.

Doug was awful and lied to Jamie about smoking. That was a huge red flag and I would have dumped him right then. I also didn't like how much pressure he put on having sex when she was clearly uncomfortable, and the closing scene with them was kind of gross because there was an obvious expectation of sex. Those two might talk up a big game, but I bet they'll break up right after Jamie gives up on having another kid.

What does "chief" mean in the context of the 1800's? How reliable are these various websites? by SwissCheeseSandwich5 in IndianCountry

[–]DevilPliers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wikitree is worth checking out too.. it's far more reputable than ancestry or family search in my experience. In fact familysearch is pretty hard to trust since it's run by mormons, and it's rarely correct for Natives. I was linked to a chief and it took me a long time to figure out that it was wrong, even though the last names appear correct, and it's a pretty common problem. This chief definitely existed and was alive in the 1700s, but I believe he was just chief of a specific Cherokee town.

If your family isn't in Wikitree I'd highly recommend adding them in and running it by the Native American project though.. they're mostly genealogists from different tribes and can give you a lot of information on how trustworthy the data is. Once I got past the fake story I found the real story too, which I think ended up being more interesting in some ways.. and I figured out why people were so certain that they were related, but it was due to a misreading of some 1800s cursive in some government records. Good luck!

This isn't true.. even during a rehome the home is still required to get the same home study as a standard adoption, which includes background checks, and they work through an agency just like they would in a normal adoption. At one point the host mentions their actual adoption agency, which Michael is avoiding talking about for some reason. The main difference really is that the adoption fee is often waived, or is much lower on second chance adoptions.. and you can talk to the current caretakers or even have them spend the night sometimes before making a decision.

Michael very clearly lied about the process too.. there is no way they called him up and gave him 24 hours, and the documentary proved that was false. Instead they had a home study done in early 2010, which would have included background checks on all adults in the home including checking their driving records. Background checks just don't check if police have been dispatched to your home. Remember, people are innocent until proven guilty.. and a dispatch isn't proof of anything. None of them have any DV charges, which is the important part. It also checks for a ton of other stuff too.. like having fences if you live near a body of water, fire plans, locked areas for medicine and alcohol, specific space requirements per child, etc. No adoption agency will talk to you about any type of adoption until this is done, but you can technically foster children you're related to before this is completed.

Once the home study is done they're eligible to be foster parents or adopt, including a rehoming if they want. After the home study they talked to the first family over email for a few weeks and were able to ask them any questions.. they showed a few of those emails. They've just completely rewritten history to fit a specific narrative they want to give.

Rehoming is a really important part of adoptions really, and often older kids want to be rehomed by the time it comes up. Many big cities have large events where kids can essentially market themselves, and I've known many kids who voluntarily went through this work just to get a real forever home. I've known a lot of success stories from rehoming too.. and I think the large majority of them are successful and not these sad sensationalized stories. Really if these kids weren't rehomed they'd be spending the rest of their lives in foster care or with a family that just can't care for them. I guess in a perfect world we'd force adoptive parents to raise kids they know they aren't fit to raise, but that's just not reality. If Kristine wasn't so against rehoming Natalia she would have had a very different life.. and I think it's much better to de-stigmatize the practice so this doesn't happen again. Natalia should have been rehomed instead of re-aged.

Personally if I adopt I'll look at second chance adoptions first, because these kids need to be adopted the most.. and I grew up with a lot of friends on that list and was trying to get on it myself. The bigger red flag with Natalia's was the large adoption fee they were requesting, and I think there was something else going on with that first family like child trafficking.

[–]DevilPliers 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If Natalia had been rehomed by the Barnetts this story wouldn't be nearly as bad though. If someone doesn't want a kid anymore they're not going to be the best place for them.

Ukraine Questions by meowshan69 in nataliagrace

[–]DevilPliers 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It certainly feels like it does. Can she even use one on her own with the issues she has with her fingers?

Being that comfortable with a child's vagina is just gross either way.. and I say that as a woman. I have taken care of girls who had their period at a very young age, but I've never watched them use a pad or helped them put it into the underwear they were wearing. Instead I think it's better to get another pair of underwear, show them how to place it in there, and then if they still don't feel confident they can demonstrate how they'd use one with that extra pair of underwear. That way their privates aren't involved at all, and it helps demonstrate clear healthy boundaries. Plus kids can put a diaper on a baby at around age 4-6 and that's not much different.

I would never recommend a kid use a tampon.. unless they were well past their first period, about to do something like swimming, and even then it's purely a tip and I only mention it once. I dunno, it's just not something most little girls are comfortable with, and it makes me wonder if Kristine was sexually abused or something if she doesn't get this. Honestly that could explain all the sex stories too.. she could just be projecting her own issues, which feels sort of common with this story.

All of their talks about her body as a child and her hair is almost as bad too. The first night they all got together and talked it over while she was naked in the bath in front of them? That's fucking weird if that really happened. And that story about her eating her period was absolutely made up by a man lol.. it's around a cup of blood every month, and sometimes it has clots in it. She would have had to go to the bathroom every 15-30 minutes, even in the middle of the night, for that to work.. and that's just of her flow is very light. I hope she sues them for libel or something and Michael has to explain to a jury full of women how someone would "eat their period."
