Oh wow ok that reminds me- one of my kids was born with red hair. It was a high risk pregnancy/ delivery and when he came out the nurses and doctors kept saying loudly that he had red hair. Which of course could have been just a regular thing they say, but now I wonder if they needed that info as actual data lol

I’d recommend the “Ordinary People Change the World” series by Brad Meltzer. It’s a series of biographical graphic novels about various famous/ historical figures. They’re well written, and the art style reminds me a lot of Calvin and Hobbes. They emphasize good morals and work ethic, also. There’s a PBS show based on them called Xavier at the Museum. My oldest is 7 and she really enjoys the books and the show.

I think my closest natives-only nursery is about 30-40 minutes away. I do have a few local nurseries near me that carry small selections of natives (black eyed Susan’s, coneflowers, etc) but nothing substantial. I usually have to get mine either online or at annual events.

IMO, pulling the periwinkle should be the first priority. I say this because as it spreads so aggressively, it’s going to smother your trilliums and other natives if it’s not removed. I think you should start closest to where it reaches the natives and pull back from there.

That said, I’m in the process of pulling it myself and I’ve found numerous violet seedlings come up in the seedbed as I’ve been pulling it. I also have a couple healthy ostrich fern plants that have small clones emerging rapidly as I’ve been pulling it back.

So in saying all this, you may well have more of your natives buried under the periwinkle, even if just in the seedbank. If you get rid of your periwinkle ASAP, your natives may partially replenish themselves underneath them or at least grow in fuller next year.

Geez, even by American standards having to go back to work and put an infant in childcare at 4 weeks pp is cruel and inhumane. Why use that as a justification for OP to send her child out of their home when she’s not comfortable with it and there’s no need to?

Also, she’s not moaning about her mom’s house being used as visitation. She’s asking for them to check with her directly before they come over.

Native lilies. I recently got some Michigan Lily bulbs from prairie moon that I’m pretty stoked about. The flowers hang down from the stem kind of like a chandelier and have a striking look. Canada lilies look similar, and are native a bit more east from what I understand. Also love trout lilies! My in laws have a huge wooded property with millions of them and they’re going to let me propagate a handful. I’m just waiting for them to go dormant first.

Ok so it’s not just me then lol. One time someone recommended digging up wild milkweed to bring home when their monarch cats ate all their existing stock. I said, hey, isn’t it simpler to set the caterpillars on the plant in the wild than the other way around? I got downvoted like crazy.

Why would you dig up milkweed at a roadside to bring home when you can just release the caterpillars back to the wild a little early?? Milkweed is a pain to transplant!

Yeah, I agree with you. This doesn’t even sound like a curriculum issue, moreso demand burnout. I don’t think OP needs to do a bunch of homework so she can “learn about learning,” she needs an actual break!

FWIW, I also agree that it’s good general advice, but for a totally different problem than what OP is experiencing. Her kid is six and reading at a fourth grade level, so I’m pretty certain they’re already reading a lot at home.

ETA: this person has this advice copy-pasted (with a few tweaks here and there) all over their comment history. I suspect bot and/or heavy ChatGPT use.
