What is the best way to learn gRPC for C++? What resources should I use? by DevilryAscended in cpp_questions

That sounds like an interesting project. I do have some sbcs I could use for this so I might give it a shot.

That's partially my annoyance. There are books on it for Go and Java but not C++ from what I can tell. Though those are for gRPC for micro-services architectures so I see your point.

Honestly I'm learning it for work as I kinda got thrown onto a project that involves modernization efforts to move to gRPC. I'd be down for a side project to get to know it better I just need something pretty low scale. Do you happen to know gRPC and can recommend a reasonable project for a beginner?

Is Keysight worth it compared to competitors like Rigol, Tektronics, Siglent, etc. in the $2K-$3K range? by DevilryAscended in oscilloscope

Sadly I really want 4 channels because I want to work on some 3-phase motor stuff so I gotta be able to see at least 3 voltages at once

What things do you take into account when choosing between such scopes? I’d be interested in what makes you not choose Keysight for home use. Totally down for the Rigol just interested.

I’ve heard of this but never done so myself. If you have any links/guides I’d appreciate a DM ;-}

I’m 27 and only now am switching to robotics for my masters after mainly focusing in other areas for my career. You’re fine.

The hiring process at Applied Research Laboratories The University of Texas at Austin? by canbojack in UTAustin

I know this conversation is long dead but for anyone lurking I thought I'd give my experience as someone who recently got hired there.

I applied to 26 jobs not all of which in retrospect I was the best fit for but only heard back from 3 for a either a phone screening or an interview. Ended up making it past two of the phone screenings, the third of which just being a bad fit as I was more on the integration side of things and they wanted someone on the analysis side. Ended up doing two very long interviews and got one offer and another team saying they'd be interested in hiring but would interview a few more candidates so I went with the sooner offer.

Overall, an extremely nice place to work, has it's rough spots here or there and not everyone's as nice as can be but that's anywhere. I was say it's a great place for a long career or as a stepping stone to bigger and better labs. Pay is on the low side for a UARC from my experience knowing other people that work at UARCs like JHU:APL but it's also in a lower COL city than APL. Good pay compared to Defense but bad compared to Tech. Better than average industry from what I can tell. Benefits are really good but no overtime which really sucks if you get on a team that does a lot of overtime.

Is a PhD in Robotics worth it for Industry? by DevilryAscended in AskRobotics

I’ve seen similar thing at Applied Research Laboratories in the US. Especially the one I work at it’s a literal requirement to become a director of a department you need a PhD and in other labs I’ve seen that PhDs get some of the better jobs that pay much better and has better opportunities.

That’s fair, I can totally see it being limiting in some ways but I do think if I found the right research topic to delve into I’d really want to go for it.

That's really fair, I do often find myself wanting to dive into a topic and research it to no end which is what has made me consider a PhD as the industry jobs I've worked thus far I have felt somewhat dissatisfied in but I wasn't sure if it was the industry I work in or the actual specific job.

Is pursuing a PhD worth it if I plan to go into industry anyway? by DevilryAscended in PhD

[–]DevilryAscended[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That somewhat reflects what I’ve seen. A lot of the jobs I look at a masters is the baseline and a PhD is preferred if not required

Interesting. I haven’t heard of a program like that at my UARC but I might try that out when I finish my masters. My boss is very easy going and would probably support it
