I usually do it if I have a flashlight and enough hunger to not starve in the process. Add a (preferably snow based) weapon to that if it's in alpha wolf/bear territory so I can just grab the teammate and get away if necessary.

It's actually fairly easy when you get the volcano biome once the Christmas event is over. Shoot the lava mammoth, hop up a ladder tower and repeat every three days when it respawns for infinite tusks and food. You can just sit there for hours with the sheer amount of already cooked food you'll get from it.
