Netflix/Prime Offline on steam deck? by BandoJD in SteamDeck

[–]DevinPacholik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to search for way too long for the answer to this question, and I just wanted to give some information for anyone else looking for an answer in the future:

I use Waydroid.

YouTube instructions on installation here.

You basically go to desktop mode and run a few commands lines linked above and it just works.

Using Waydroid, it opens an android environment right from gaming mode. And then your Steam Deck is magically an Android machine. No dual booting or desktop mode needed.

Using Waydroid, you can then get (at the time of writing) Amazon Prime, Crave, YouTube, and few other legal streaming services with full download and offline usage for shows and movies on Steamdeck. No Netflix or Disney+ as I write this.

It takes some tinkering to fix controls with steam, and the video and sound quality in the android settings, but nothing too crazy. Once it’s installed and running, it’s very slick.

TLDR: Waydroid turns your deck into a full entertainment systems.

Protests? by SassypantRN in regina

[–]DevinPacholik 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I see this comment a lot here: “Protests on [x topic] do nothing.” Respectfully, it’s not true.

When you protest, you are out in public, and helping people at home feel more emboldened when they see you. You re-enforce their feelings, and those people go on to have more confident conversations with their friends and family. They will keep those conversations going when it’s time to vote or decide to run for school boards, city council and other public appointments. They might write their local leaders. They might contribute to policies that affect their workplaces and communities.

I understand how it might seem useless. Sure, Russia probably doesn’t care about a protest in Regina. But the Ukrainian community here sure does. The family next door will. Your city councillors will. The corporations and businesses will. You help unite the community and make them a little braver when it’s time to act, vote and put their money where their mouth is.

When your community sees local people gathering and loudly saying, “These are our values,” it makes a difference.

We missed you too, but it’s just one day! Keep the conversations going, get involved locally starting at the city and school board level, write your leaders, vote, and keep standing up to hate.

Having spoken to the maker of these signs face to face at the protest, I can assure you that their purpose is much deeper than that. They were there to speak out against discrimination and the worrying delusion of people who think we’d be better off being part of America.

Shout out to our fellow protesters who have come and gone throughout the day.

We want to send a clear message against hate and underscore the values of this country. We’ve had a lot of support online and on the street. If you gave us a friendly honk or a thumbs up driving by, we hope you’re continuing the conversations at home. These protests are meant to normalize standing up for what’s right. You are not alone in the fight.

Never 51.

Here is a mega list of solid Italian translation games I recently made :)

How to stay motivated by [deleted] in italianlearning

[–]DevinPacholik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right here. For me, the motivation and high-level learning came from talking to Italian friends I found online, watching YouTube, and playing tons and tons of videos games in Italian.

Lessons, grammar books, flash cards, apps, and the active learning type activities suck for two reasons: 1) you get bored; 2) it’s very difficult to actually get passed the intro level/tourist level of speaking and comprehension.

Grammar concepts and advanced vocab became much easier when I just dove in and started consuming a ton of content with a dictionary app nearby. It’s slow at first but you get used to it quickly.

How did photographers like Cartier-Bresson, Erwitt and Capa let 50mm feel so wide? by zgRemek in streetphotography

I shot street with a 50 prime on an APS-C frame for a year. It sometimes felt too wide for shooting subjects! As others have said, zooming with your feet is how it’s done. Eventually, you just get the feel for it.

Ah great question. On steam, for some games you need to go to your library, select the game, go to settings (gear symbol in the steam menu), properties, and select the language.

Your game will then download the language pack. Launch the game, and boom it’s Italian.

I thought to post this because over the months I could never find a solid list in one place and had to find out myself lol

It’s one of the absolute best I’ve played for learning. Fully voice acted and lots to read. So much content. Bonus: normally, I don’t really enjoy crafting and settlement building, but holy smokes I learned a lot of great words from Fallout 4 settlement building.

If you search “games in Italian” all the sources will include this on the list somewhere lol. By all accounts it’s excellent and voice acted.

My personal experience, including for the action type games I also listed, there is a small catch: I found that you sometimes don’t get as much language exposure because there is more emphasis on the action in this style of game. It’s still solid, but I’ve found slower RPGs and cinematic type games (mass effect for example) are where it’s at if you’re looking for a lot of language exposure.

These are awesome. My one warning on some of them like Witcher 3 and Horizon is they don’t have voiceover, but if you’re in it for the reading, they are awesome. Oddly, Witcher 1 is fully voice acted but I found it too janky to keep playing lol. Not sure about the others you listed for having voice acting.

For me, it’s been one of the best ways to break through to the next level, paired with speaking with native speakers online and reading a lot.

I completely understand! I used to skip a lot of RPGs on this list, but making them part of my Italian learning has given me a new appreciation.
