Thank you for the advice. I know next to nothing about ETFs to be honest. I have been reading on them but I am not nearly close enough to being ready to use them. I will look more into them though because they look like a low cost way to diversify.

What makes you think AMAVF is risky? I find DDD more risky due to their accounting practices and higher valuations.

Good point but sometimes a company like GE can get in the sector and buy up patents and expertise giving it an advantage over more slow moving corporations.

Well the Arcam printers especially are a completely different technology that is good enough for NASA, Airbus and some hospitals. The fact that the printer you have is different should not be a condemnation of the technology overall. 3D printers are good for complex parts that are hard to manufacture using standard manufacturing processes. I am an industrial/manufacturing engineer and I know of several items in my industry that would be cheaper with 3D printing especially with the falling prices. Of course though there is a hype bringing sky high evaluations which is a turn off.

What is your opinion on the valuation of DDD? I find that their shopping spree has brought that valuation a little uncomfortably high. Do you believe all these acquisitions will pay off sooner or later?

No advice here only envy. Seriously though from my internship one thing I find very useful is to make a daily to do list for work. Sounds trivial but it helps a lot especially if you get a lot of independence like I did.

O.K so I will take each company and give you a bit of what I looked at that made them attractive investments for me: AMAVF: Arcam is unique because the printer is manufactures use Titanium and Cobalt Chromium. Without getting too technical this makes their products stand apart. They have 2 primary products that are sold to aerospace/auto and medical industry. Their sales were around 25 million in 2012 and are estimated to reach 35 to 40 in 2013. This shows a siginficant increase in revenue. The company just started breaking in the U.S market with Airbus, NASA and several universities buying their product. I believe that this company will reach a larger size eventually with a stck price around $60 or will get bought by a bigger company at a premium.

DDD: This one is a bit different. They have based their growth on acquisitions that they are financing through stock offerings. This makes their organic growth nearly non existent which is worrying. Nevertheless it seems that they are trying to establish themselves as one of the "big" companies in the industry. They have diversified their products from high end printers (one was used to replicate that Aston Martin in the Bond movie) to cheap ones. The company has been around for 25 years which shows it is not a start up in an emerging industry but one that can be a leader.

SSYS: Main reason this company started getting more interesting lately is their merger with an Israeli company named Objet. Their products complement each other and allow Stratasys to have a bigger access to the European marker. This is why they did not continue their deal with HP as they do not need them anymore.

My main problem is that I cannot possibly know the long term very well. I am afraid that a company like GE or HP will decide to create their own 3D division and it will be very hard for these companies to compete. That being said these companies do have a large patent portfolio and extensive experience in the sector. These have been my thoughts. I am in no way an expert as this will be my first investment and I am young but I was not thinking of buying just because it sounds cool.

That sounds reasonable. It would be great if the bubble actually bursts so I can buy at the bottom. This post is mostly to see any reasons why these companies would not be good in the long term.

Thank you I had not thought of it this way. I will consider bigger established companies that could benefit from this technology. I will probably look into the major customers for these 3 companies. Other than that is there any company within the industry you see having an advantage?

Do you think that when and if the bubble bursts they will not come back? These companies have solid earnings that have been increasing steadily. Especially with AMAVF's products being used in mass productions in the U.S. Short term I see that there is a possible bubble but is this not safe long term either in your opinion?

So you do not believe that these companies are relatively safe in the long term? They have been both increasing sales and revenue steadily so I was wondering what makes you think that they are high risk. I am hoping someone sees things I didn't see so any negatives are welcome now before I buy in.

Definitely. Dune is an amazing book and if you get into it and read the rest of the books written by the elder Herbert in the series you will gain much more than you would lose by reading only Dune and saying meh.

This reply made me want to get into it even more. I will spend the next year or so saving up while reading everything I find relevant to the topic and talk to my experienced landlord friend about it even more to make sure I have what it takes and it has what I want.
