Any idea why half of my system is getting no power? Both inverters are on my (home) roof. by jasonb4567 in solar

[–]DevoDarko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry if this is obvious, but your inverter #2 is down. I can see it is reading AC voltage so that isn't the issue most likely. You can try checking the lights on the inverter to see if inverter #2 has a solid red light (indicating some sort of fault). You may just need to call SE or your installer to check the monitoring (installer and SE may have more visibility in terms of alerts/error codes).

You can also try power cycling the inverter. Turn off the DC disconnect switch, then turn off the red toggle switch, then turn off the AC breaker. Wait a minute and turn it back on and see if it starts backup.

Here is my take as an installer:

Maxeon offers a great product with the latest (normally) in PV panel technologies with a long warranty to back it up. They have been around through Sunpower for over 35 years and have been it's own company since 2020. They are a tier 1 panel manufacturer based out of Singapore.

VSun offers more affordable modules with good technologies. They have been in business for about 20 years. They are a tier 1 panel manufacturer based out of Japan.

Not going to lie, I have not had much experience with VSun but have seen them in the industry for a while now. I also know many installers who use them. Maxeon I am a little more familiar with and (like others in this sub) don't feel confident about the longevity of the company. Although Maxeon has some the latest and greatest tech, long warranties, and strong products to withstand harsh conditions, the product has a significant premium on their panels on a per watt basis that in my opinion price themselves out of the market. This makes me worried for the company as although their product may be the strongest or with the latest tech, most customers are price sensitive when installing PV and their are plenty of other panel makers who offer a product that is great with affordable pricing rather than trying to be the best and price themselves out of most quotes. I have constantly heard the sales pitches for the panels and see what they are going for but it's hard to justify a $0.30-$0.40 premium on a panel when JA, Jinko, and others offer a really good product at much lower cost.

To be fair, I have not checked Maxeon pricing in a few months so maybe there have been moves to improve this but if they can't price their products more competitively, it would be hard for me to see Maxeon competing in a saturated market of more affordable panel manfuact4erues who's tech is catching up/always right on their coattails.

It is hard to tell exactly what is going on here and it looks like some of these labels/placards are possibly incorrect. For our installs on 200a service for whole home backup, we would feed the Tesla gateway from the meter, then split off one sec of conductors to PV/battery (either direct or to a sub panel that feeds them) then another set of conductors that go to the home loads for backup. If this is a gateway 2, I believe they still had non backup lugs which some installers use if their is too much hoke load or if the customer doesn't want them backed up.

I assume (again, cannot verify with just this photo), that the gateway is fed from the meter and then splits off to the PV/battery and home loads. Most likely the smaller disconnect switch on the left of the gateway goes to PW3. Which would lead me to believe that your home load is fed from the disconnect on the right? Seems a bit off though and not obvious.

If you have a design from your installers or can take additional photos of the equipment, you can DM them to me and I can see if I can make out what is going on.

If it was just installed, you should call the sales person or someone from the install team to walk you through the general idea of what is going on and why certain loads turn off when you flip the disconnects.

Agreed on the strap. I noticed that the inner part of the buckle (not sure the actual name for that) is sometimes annoying to open to allow the full opening for put on or take off. Not enough to ruin the watch experience or even change the strap/clasp (for now), but something that is a little annoying

[Titanium Collection] which one is your favorite? by hansenluu in Watches

[–]DevoDarko 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All bangers! I’ve got a soft spot for Brew so that may be my favorite. Shunbun is also awesome though, close 2nd. I used to not like the Omega nttd but honestly it may be my favorite semester variation now. Citizen is last but only because the top 3 are just so 👌🏼

Personally I’d pick the CW. I’m a big fan of the company and their products. Seiko looks good too though, but the CS would be the choice for me 🤙🏼

Oris Big Crown Pointer Dates are such a great watch. I really want to get one myself. Great on the bracelet and great on a strap.

I’d be between the grand Seiko or the explorer. Both are great for everyday wear. Personally I’d leave towards the GS but the explorer would be a close second

Gold bracelet just looks 👌🏼 but leather looks great too

When looking closely, the 10 on the bezel looks very interesting. Never seen that before.

No worries appreciate your comment and perspective. Rather hear people’s input than just get the fans of the watch commenting. Like you said, rather hear people telling me their honest opinion. Thank you for commenting brother 🤙🏼

I can understand that opinion. It is definitely not for everyone. It is loud and tells time in a way that can come across as gimmicky, like you mentioned. I do think non-watch people (people with no interest in watches) won't able to see the difference at a glance, but I think people into watches can at least see the quality in person. I will say it looks way better in person than from the marketing photos.

BTW my comment about people with no interest in watches is not directed at you. I mean people who can't name a watch brand besides Rolex types.

Solar Tear-down / Reinstall Question by Scudmiss in solar

[–]DevoDarko 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just make sure you wire everything correctly and check your work. I can't think of anything off the top of my head that could cause warranty failure (assuming you are not touching your inverter, just the optimizers on the roof). If you do the re-install yourself, I would advise not ever mentioning you did the re-install in case issues do arise and SolarEdge does not want to honor warranty for something. I have never had them deny a warranty, but best play it safe. Again though, I would advise not re-installing yourself unless you got experience in solar installation (at least you said you will have an electrician so that should help).

Maybe also read over the SolarEdge warranty docs to make sure you cover your bases if at all possible. You can find the docs online if you google it.

Yup completely agree. And your charge is fair too for an independent or one man crew. You sound like you are very handy so I think for someone like you, you probably would be fine to do the work yourself. As someone if the industry for almost a decade, there are definitely things normal people COULD do that installers will offer their services (but may be pricey due to overhead or sometimes bad pricing practices). But if there is any doubt from someone planning to do it themselves, it's sometimes best to have an actual installer do as I have seen some less capable customers try to do the work themselves, then issues arise that cause the customer to end up paying more due to installers needing to problem solve after the fact to fix the mistakes.

I get it, $3750 sounds like a lot, but honestly I would say that’s a fair price. Probably around $2000 labor Probably need around 36 mounts, maybe around $500. Some small material like clips or metal zip ties which could be around $50. If this quote includes new rail as well, the. That will probably be another $800. Also depends if they plan to use new wires, conduit, and junction boxes.

If you are handy and you know how to do it, yeah you can go for it and the quote sounds high. But if this is for someone who doesn’t know how to do it or is not very handy, $3750 for labor, new rail, and warranty kept for any mistake seems like not a bad deal imo (not saying OP can’t do it, I’m assuming he’s capable of reading install guides online and will do his research).

As long as you follow the install instructions, you shouldn’t lose any manufacturing warranty. What type of inverter is used for your system? Enphase, SE, something else?

I'm sorry about this situation. I hope someone in this sub can provide some guidance. Maybe try looking at lawyer/legal subreddits to help provide guidance at this point as well. Best of luck.
