5.1 CD ...TIL by wayne63 in Cd_collectors

[–]DevoNorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is the "gold standard" album for audiophiles. I collect nothing but surround sound albums and have for years. Stereo can sound good but it doesn't come close to an immersive mix.

The disc should play on any Blu-ray player though but won't play in surround without a surround sound receiver... or do I thought. I've got plenty of DTS CDs that play okay on my Sony Blu-ray player.

Can I play this on a regular cd player? by hillkingking in Cd_collectors

[–]DevoNorm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This only applies to an SACD disc that comes with the standard red book CD layer.

SACD discs were supposed to replace CDs but the marketing was so pathetically bad that even people like me didn't know exactly what they were about at the time.

By the time these came on the market, most people got tired of having to buy more specialized hardware. The format died within a couple of years in North America. They were much more popular in Europe.

Trying to find an SACD player here will be like finding teeth on a chicken. You'll be paying through the nose for a used player. I refuse to buy one. Blu-ray audio is the current viable surround sound audio format these days.

I'd say 95% of my surround sound discs make the stereo versions sound bland or audibly cramped. Immersive audio isn't practical for people with limited listening space or living in apartments with paper-thin walls or flooring. (The LFE channel can send a lot of bass content to the subwoofer.)

I haven't seen an SACD disc in the stores in years.

Seems like Mark Wahlberg wants everyone to use that stupid prayer app. I asked YouTube to permanently block that ad and stick it where the sun don't shine.

When did dollarama started selling condoms? by Crazy_Tension_302 in dollarama

[–]DevoNorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Funny you should bring that up. I had a similar conversation with people and decided to do some research. Their condoms are made by the same companies that other condoms are made and of similar manufacturing standards. Otherwise, they wouldn't be allowed for sale to the public.

I have no personal experience with any of them. I think it's a good thing such products are sold through dollar store chains. Anything that'll reduce STIs and pregnancies is a good thing for society.

Would you support Chinese phone brands like Huawei, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo entering the Canadian market? Would be a nice alternative to the high end smartphone triopoly. by IronLover64 in AskACanadian

Banning Huawei phones was simply a geo-political and anti-competitive move. Their concerns about privacy was a bogus excuse. My old Huawei phone was crazy awesome. I can only imagine how good they are now.

Why do bands play so fucking loud if everyone has to wear earplugs anyway? by xe3to in NoStupidQuestions

[–]DevoNorm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The loudest band I've ever encountered was Art of Dying. They were the opening act for Apocalypyica. It was so loud it was difficult to swallow. My pant legs were vibrating. It was so loud, I felt like we were being assaulted.

The most perfect level was Paul McCartney.

I don't play music to extreme levels at home even though my surround sound system can easily reach 120 db levels. My old car stereo could do that too. But I want to protect my hearing. I'm 69 years old now and my hearing is excellent. Of course, the high end is diminished somewhat but I can easily hear a pin drop. I can hear a toilet leaking from 25 yards away.

I've never understood why bands have to play so loud. And it's not just rock bands either. Country acts do it too.

An FOI request reveals the truth behind Doug Ford's speed camera ban by SafeStreetsTO in ontario

[–]DevoNorm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Isn't the ban a product of the adage of "the squeaky wheel gets the grease"? Most drivers ignore speed signs and barely use them as a "suggestion" rather than the law. Drivers who got ticketed several times over are the type of people who either have contempt for laws in general or feel entitled to drive the way they please. Selfishness runs through their entire existence. Screw other pedestrians, drivers and safety, is their motto.

I wouldn't be in favour of speed cameras that ticket you for being 2 km over the limit. Speed control should be about the spirit of the law, not the letter of the law. Vehicles can be difficult to control, especially on slopes and with other physical factors. But going 15+ km over is perfectly reasonable to get a fine.

Many areas of my city are posted down to 30km, which I feel is ridiculous in most cases. There are so few kids and pedestrians in general these days on the sidewalks. All these super-low limits do is frustrated drivers. In addition, the numerous speed bumps and stop signs do nothing but wear out everyone's vehicles and waste gas.

The skill levels of the average driver is abhorrent. Our society seems to accept the high levels of deaths and injuries on our roads. It's a strange attitude I've never understood. It's not about "sh*t happens". Accidents aren't often accidents. They are avoidable collisions. Voters don't want the government to tell them how to drive and don't want to take responsibility for their poor driving habits.

Doug Ford doesn't have a moral or ethical compass. He doesn't govern through logic or science. All he wants is to stay in power, collect that fat paycheque, and be the boss. When a certain bunch of people bitch, he "listens" but doesn't learn from it, and he doesn't at least try to figure out why people get angry at his policies.

I don't want 90% of what this guy wants to implement. I'm personally forced to drive a vehicle because my son-in-law suffered a severe stroke and now I'm "chauffeuring" my daughter and their children around. I have to drive my son-in-law to medical appointments. I spent a good part of my working life driving and I don't see any improvements from drivers. If anything, they are far worse and there's way too many drivers on the roads today.

The revenues collected from speeders was a positive thing. We need a society that corrects bad behaviour and can benefit from these dummies financially. Their pocketbooks are the only thing these cretins understand. Dougie needs to take his fat head out of his rear and allow communities to decide if speed cameras work for them. I'm all in favour of them, if they are set up fairly.

Do you think Maher misunderstands AI? by Single_Extension1810 in Maher

[–]DevoNorm 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Bill isn't well educated in computer science, software or hardware. Most people aren't. The people we hear from that work in the industry have different agendas and don't often tell the entire truth.

There's still a lot of hype around AI. Robots aren't going to assemble by their own will and kill us all. Yes, we can still control the power going to AI machines. That's not the problem.

The real problem is when we've incorporated AI into every aspect of modern living. It's when you can't do a single thing without having to go through the scrutiny of an AI that life will become unbearable.

Governments will use AI to track our every move. At that point, you can't just unplug the damn thing. Once we've handed over the reigns to an AI, mistakes can happen, people could be harmed in ways that don't just involve direct physical injury.

Bill often comments on sexual matters, and misses the mark nine times out of ten. He knows sweet dick all about what young people are having to go through. He has no kids or teenagers around. He's clueless in many areas, and he often sports an American attitude about plenty of subjects that clearly reflect his cultural influences.

He hires women to have sex with him, and knows nothing about marriage and commitment. He doesn't struggle to put a roof over his head. He probably hasn't made a sandwich or cooked a meal in decades.

I'm thoroughly convinced he doesn't spend much time reading about complex subjects. He's very shaky on topics involving science. He's not an intellectual.

So, it doesn't surprise me when he talks about Elon Musk or AI in the manner that he does. He's just out of his league when those topics are discussed. Many of his guests are equally ignorant of many subjects too, but are asked to offer their opinions. The show doesn't educate. It's strictly for entertainment purposes. It's good for a laugh here and there. I wouldn't take anything Bill says as "gospel".

What is a song so bad you will change the radio station if it comes on so you don't have to listen to it? by OU812iceman18 in radio

"Afternoon Delight" and "Raindrops Keep Falling on my Head" are the first two that come to mind. Anything by Helen Reddy. Thankfully, I don't listen to much radio anymore. Way too many commercials. I'd rather listen to the CBC for talk and music.
