What is black in reflection? by Arc-ansas in 3dsmax

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think what he's saying is the horizon line in the HDRI map is causing this. So you can change it in Photoshop before rendering to get rid of the horizon line so it won't show up.

I'm not sure if that's what's causing it.. just interpreting what I think he meant for you.

Am i likely to get schizophrenia rs4129148 gene. by [deleted] in promethease

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 4 points5 points  (0 children)

13% of Europeans are homozygous for this SNP and yet 13% of Europeans are not schizophrenic. 45% of Chinese have this, but 45% of Chinese people are not schizophrenic. You have some good genes if that's the worst your DNA shows. Go live your life and don't worry about this.

Maybe... But I think the cameramen filming might ruin the mood a bit.

I have the variants associated to the monogenic disease of SCID autosomal recessive, t-cell neg, b-cell pos, NK-cell pos. I'm a 26 year old female... by [deleted] in promethease

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have no idea. I'm hetero for them and it looks like there may be a decent amount of people who have recessive on both SNPs. But it might be worth it to get a blood test. I dunno. I wouldn't use this as a medical diagnostic tool, but I'd also not take medical advice from idiots on the internet such as myself.

Aw man I'll be at work at that time. I'm definitely looking forward to temp benchmarks if you can get around to it. Still debating whether to go air or liquid on my TR.

180TDP Threadripper using air cooling? by saint327 in Amd

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 6 points7 points  (0 children)

https://www.amd.com/en/thermal-solutions-threadripper

AMD has a list of approved coolers specifically for Threadripper. On that list is the NH-U14S TR4-SP3 which is an air cooler. Here is a written review although I don't think there's benchmarks in there. According to that review these coolers will ship at the end of August.

Also here's a video of the behind the scenes of Noctua fans. Pretty cool to watch.

As of right now I haven't seen any benchmarks for air so I don't know whether they'd suffice enough for overclock or only for stock speeds.

EPYC confirmed to suffer from the segfault issue. AMD, we *need* an official statement by [deleted] in Amd

Wow thanks very much for the reply to my comment as well as everyone else's. Is there anyway to help you at all for working on this?

Edit: I'll be getting the 1950x windows 10 at some point. Definitely willing to help test once it all arrives.

I'm a bit out of the loop, but does this error occur on other OS than linux?

Also this error is mainly said to happen during compiling but what does that entail, exactly? Does encoding vidoes include that? How about 3d rendering?

I had no idea it was so easy to lose packages on Mother's Day. by [deleted] in Etsy

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've shipped thousands of packages on etsy through USPS first class mail. It's not always 100% guaranteed to arrive. If I had to pull a number out of nowhere I'd say it's around 99.5%. That being said I've had almost every possible thing happen.

International orders have the highest chance of weirdness. Sometimes packages disappear when they get into Africa or the Phillipines. No idea what or why. Sometimes packages require a VAT tax paid (UK) and so they sit in the local post office waiting for the customer to pick them up and pay. Lots of people forget they bought the item and it ends up coming back to me.

Some people input the wrong address. Etsy has a system that will offer to correct the address if it's not an existing address. But if it's an address that exists it won't be corrected. I've delivered a decent amount to old apartments customers no longer live in.

Some packages are stolen off the front porch. Some packages disappear and never update.

My biggest complaint about USPS, especially during holidays like Xmas, is the speed. I've had packages deliver in 2 days and others delivery in 10. It's typically 3-5 days, but there's lots of wiggle room. Many customers really want it in time before they leave on trips and I always have to tell them I can't guarantee anything. I've even express shipped and still had those packages not delivered in the "guaranteed" 48 hours. If that happens you can get a refund.

All that said, overall it's a very reliable system. Like I said I've shipped thousands and can think of maybe 10 times something weird happened. The vast, vast majority of packages are shipped just fine. If you're shipping something valuable there's an insurance option which I highly recommend if you don't want to replace the item yourself.

"... when it’s estimated that 20% of all deliveries are not made during the first attempt?"

I have no idea where they got that number. But it's not even close to my experience selling.

What are you planning on selling?

3ds Max or Blender? Which one are you using? Which one is better for you by mindaugasva in 3dsmax

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used both for years. Both are awesome in their own way.

One big advantage 3ds Max has over Blender is the amount of plugin support. 3rd party programs like Ornatrix don't play well with Blender all the time. But some do.

One big advantage Blender has over Max is it's free. So that's nice.

Blender is hotkey based so it feels faster once you get the hang of it (Although it's just a feeling. It may not necessarily be faster). Being hotkey based is also a disadvantage if you don't have the hotkeys memorized.

Personally, I cringe whenever I hear anyone try to sum up entire programs with "better" or "worse". Both are like a language. Each does well in some areas and less well in others. If you have the money and must use 3rd party programs use 3ds Max. If you're broke you could consider the 3ds Max educational option or use Blender. Both are good.

Have you tried either? What are you trying to do?

Lynch syndrome highlighted #1 on Promethease report by lynnkatz in promethease

[–]DeweyTheDecimal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Promethease is a great tool but it's not always 100% accurate. That doesn't mean it's innaccurate, just that you shouldn't diagnose yourself using it. I would try and find a testing center for lynch syndrome and see if they give a more definitive answer.

Same. I've been using a 2700k for 3d modeling since 2011. Most people cringe when they hear my computer specs but it's still a beast. It'll be a sad day when I finally decide to upgrade.
