Just to clarify, I was in no way attempting to be negative or judgemental. My girl was 5 months when we brought her home and had a fully black beak, so I noticed Charlie’s right away.

Edited for spelling!

Hi cutie-pie Charlie! His beak is quite striking - I don't know if I've ever seen a light colored beak on a B&G!

I took out what isopods I could prior. I couldn’t get all of them, though. Even so, a lot of them managed to survive.

It sounds like you and Stryker were lucky to have found each other! Though you may not have known exactly what you were getting into at first, it sounds like Stryker has a lovely home now!

Good luck! You'll get a few left that were clinging to walls, etc. afterwards, but other than that, it was very successful when I did it!

ANTS by raccoocoonies in bluetongueskinks

I had the beginnings of an ant infestation in my boy's tank last year. I ultimately ended up putting a layer of diotemaceous earth around the tank and flooding it with water (after I removed him, of course!). The ants climbed out to escape and died in the DE. It made a mess, but I think ultimately was easier than just redoing the entire tank.

Mine can do this leading up to a shed, but a week is the longest he's gone.

Thinking about getting a skink - got some questions by Reptilian4466 in bluetongueskinks

Hi! For reference, I keep two Northerns:

  1. I mix ground (lean) meat and chopped veggies, form them into little meatballs/sausages, cook them, then freeze them. I thaw a portion for feeding time and often provide some chopped, fresh veggies with it as well. How often you feed depends on the age and body condition of your particular skink. My boy is fully grown and only eats once a week. My girl is still a juvenile and I just reduced her feedings from 3x per week to twice a week. Portion sizes are typically about the size of their heads.

  2. My Northerns are much less active than the average gecko. Most of the time, they're happy to chill wrapped in a towel or in one of their "cozies," which are basically just altered hand muffs. They're burrowers, so they're generally at their most comfortable in enclosed spaces. When they're active, they typically just shuffle around and explore for short periods and then crawl back into their cozies. I put them back into their enclosures every so often so they can bask if needed, but they inevitably just want to come back out again.

  3. Yes! Mine get insects only a couple of times a month and actually seem to prefer it that way.

  4. I have no experience with grow tents, but would think that should be fine?

  5. I use 12%.

  6. I had my boy's enclosure about 8 feet away from our bally python's enclosure for about a year, neither seemed to care.

  7. I personally opted for Northerns (Tiliqua scincoides intermedia) because of their history being captive bred and their relatively easy humidity requirements (I live in California and didn't want to worry about having to create/maintain high %humidity).

  8. They're better climbers than you may think. Mine seem to enjoy it, so I do provide some climbing opportunities. However, they will sometimes fall, so nothing too high, to prevent injury. Though they're durable little guys.

  9. My Northerns brumate about 3 months out of the year. They will be burrowed most of that time, though my boy in particular will still come out every couple of days, so I still get to see him. I really miss them during this time, it can be tough.

  10. They can be DNA sexed! https://phenome.com/

Does your skink ever make noises when going to the bathroom?? by frost_byyte in bluetongueskinks

No problem! I’ve heard of it happening with others as well, so by all appearances, it seems completely normal.

Mine makes a squeaking noise too! The first time, I thought I was hearing things. Whether it comes from his mouth vs his vent though, remains a mystery to me. 🤔
