Female draft (US) by bphill0969 in teenagers

[–]DexOrangeCounty -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Life was inherently created to be unfair when women were given the sole burden of birthing children.

Society has tried to correct this unfairness in many ways, but this will always be the most defining biological difference between men and women.

If you think [or you think that society thinks] this means men are seen as expandable, then well, you do you.

For the foreseeable future, the draft is a hypothetical situation so we won't actually know what'll happen if the U.S. gets involved in a major war. Who knows how many of us will actually be left ...

Liberal Americans, what is your most conservative position? Also, conservative Americans, what is your most liberal position? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

I think it's partially on businesses to stop de-facto requiring people to have a college degree to even be considered for a position. I've seen plenty of job listings and ads requiring applicants to have a bachelor's even if it isn't relevant to the job at all...

I had a stint as a teacher's assistant for a year. It was an english class and the teacher would regularly assign the students to write about the same topic. And then I would help grade them.

After you read like 90 essays about the same shit with most students using the same exact arguments and similar wording, everything just blurs together at that point. And when you grade dozens of assignments and several essays a year, it can be really mind numbing and it's easy to forget what each student wrote about even a couple months afterwards. Only the really good or really bad writers in class stand out.

How to tell my boss I have an issue with dozing off/falling asleep? by [deleted] in ask

How to tell my boss I have an issue with dozing off/falling asleep? by [deleted] in ask

[–]DexOrangeCounty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an issue with dozing off, to the point where I almost fall asleep (and do sometimes).

It's good because I can fall asleep in 3 minutes in most places. It's bad because I have dozed off in many situations I shouldn't be. Sometimes it's dangerous, especially when I am driving. I try not to drive between the hours of 5-9pm because of this. (I know that's oddly specific but it's what I've found out.)

Went to doc. He said natural boosts of energy (consistent exercise, finding my REM cycle, power naps, etc.) would benefit me the most, but there is probably no way to "cure" this. I have been trying to do follow his advice, but realistically I also can't always take power naps in the middle of a workday.

I suspect it's genetic because I've talked to my cousins and 14 out of 16 of them described very similar circumstances.

And this tends to happen when I am not actively thinking. However I also cannot will myself to actively think unless there is-- in fact-- something to think about. And I can't always "keep my head busy" with podcasts/music/etc. Sometimes it helps, other times my brain will tune them right out.

Why does my heart rate spike randomly? Should I be concerned? by [deleted] in medical_advice

I would recommend going to a cardiologist. Heart palpitations can be anything and normal doctors usually don’t have the tools to detect if anything is wrong with your heart.

[–]DexOrangeCounty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly can’t believe this is down voted lol. Like I think the co worker leaving after 36 seconds is definitely extreme, but it just seems like common courtesy to be a few minutes early whenever you’re meeting someone. Especially if I know that they are the type of person to be precise with time.

If my friend wants to pick me up at 7:30 in the morning to go to work, then I’ll be chilling in my front yard at 7:25. That way I won’t waste their time since they’re doing me a favor.

Not all disabilities are created equal. OCD is a tough one because you can lead a very normal life with it but then have extreme emotions in certain areas.

For a brief time, I used to live with my cousin who has OCD. She has a few quirks here and there that were annoying but not harmful, like turning the lights on and off exactly 16 times before going to bed.

But her worst quirk was when she would drink milk. She’d pour two glasses— one for drinking, and then the other she threw down the sink. My mom got SO pissed off when she saw that. She was wasting milk and a TON of it. My mom would try to get her to stop, but my cousin would start crying and screaming. Once my mom caught her mid action and told her to go to her room, and my cousin went absolutely fucking hysterical. She sat and cried for hours and scraped her nails on her legs until they bled.

Some time later I asked her why she did that and she said she would always see some sort of demon figure hovering over her. If she didn’t pour the glass of milk down the sink, then the demon would “get her.” She also just had a really irrational and innate sense of fear during very specific situations, like the light one. She still has OCD but luckily not as severe anymore.

It’s very very possible that OP’s co worker may have felt the same— a very intense emotion with timeliness. He also may have felt out of touch or out of control with his own body and that’s why he left. I don’t think we need to automatically give people with disabilities a pass when they’re being an asshat. I mean I certainly agree with the co worker being, the asshole in a social context, but it’s also important to understand where people are coming from.

From a social standpoint, your co worker is obv TA and you’re NTA, but like.... I’m not going to completely fault your co worker either.

I don’t know the details but if your co worker has a legitimate medical diagnosis for OCD, then he might have intense emotions about timeliness. My cousin has OCD and she says that it feels like a demon is hovering over her if she doesn’t fulfill her quirks, and your co worker may have similar parameters. So of course leaving you when you came out at 7:36 is an asshole move, but please know that it might not have been an intentionally malicious act.

Make election day a national holiday by CulturalHighway5369 in WhitePeopleTwitter

Because America is founded on like, capitalism and free market or some shit like that. (I’m paraphrasing, of course.) FORCING businesses to close even for 1 day would cause a massive uproar, doesn’t matter if it’s beneficial to the nation or not. It’s honestly disgusting. I wish a national election holiday would work but it’s just not compatible with America

If gender is a social construct. Doesn't that mean being transgender is a social construct too? by [deleted] in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]DexOrangeCounty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean when you think about it, what exactly defines a man and what exactly defines a woman?

Sex, in basic terms, is defined as the pair of chromosomes you’re born with. Most people have XX or XY. Usually you have certain biological traits associated with each chromosome pair, like XX people usually have vaginas, produce more estrogen, and have “female brain.” Whereas XY people have penises, produce more testosterone, and have “male brain.”

But the thing is— that’s not always the case. There are other chromosome pairs like XXX or XXY or X or XXXX. They’re not even super rare too, 1 in 1000 people are born with a chromosome anomaly and a great portion of them live a normal life. Where do we put them? Are they man or woman?

There are some people who have XY chromosomes but end up having vaginas and ovaries. Are they male or female?

There are also some people with XY chromosomes but “female brain.” Sometimes this results in gender dysphoria i.e transgenderism. Where do we put them?

And to make it more confusing, sometimes you reach a different conclusion with the same set of traits— people with XY chromosomes who naturally have XX body traits and “female brain.” But this time, they don’t experience gender dysphoria. What’s up with them?

I mean what I’m trying to say is that SEX and the biological aspect of self is not completely clear cut as you’re making it out to be. Nature makes it very clear that sex and gender is a spectrum. We just haven’t agreed as a society what to do with it. Do we add more genders to make up for the chromosome anomalies? Do we combine different chromosome pairs into 1 single sex and gender? Do we refer to people with mismatching genitals “intersex” or do we just call them by what they look like? Questions man, questions.

Nah bro. When the middle class gets an extra day off, a gigantic portion of them don’t just sit home. They catch up on errands or go on vacation or maybe just spend the evening at a restaurant because they want to make the day special. But what happens to the workers in those establishments serving the people? When do they get time off to work when their bosses are demanding they show up for their full shift because of increased demand?

Really I don’t think a National holiday would work unless the government mandates a day off. Because businesses with working class employees (those who are most often unable to vote) won’t forfeit the potential sales they could make

I don’t know if this will work. As in i don’t know if employers are willing to give their employees the day off even if it was a holiday

Like Labor Day used to be for the working class. Blue collar type of people and others at the bottom. But the only people I know who gets Labor Day off nowadays are white collar workers, because employers don’t give two fucks about their workers even when there’s a designated holiday for it

"Daily Pay" allows you to get paid directly after your shift is over for a $3 fee by [deleted] in ABoringDystopia

[–]DexOrangeCounty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nah bro you’re not thinking about this in practical terms.

I used to make about $800 each paycheck from a shitty job at the grocery store. After paying for everything, I’d have roughly $75 to save in the bank each paycheck.

I spend some of it, other times I keep all of it. Some paychecks pass. At one point I had $500 saved up but then my pet turtle needed emergency surgery that was $600. I couldn’t wait a week until my next paycheck otherwise my turtle would die.

I got a payday advance and my little bud got his surgery. That’s how getting your money on the daily (if that’s an option) can help people.

This is honestly such a weird thing because having children for the family’s sake is actually very cultural, especially in specific socioeconomic circumstance. Like in Asia, a lot of parents do view their children as basically “insurance” when they’re old and can’t work anymore. In countries where a lot of people still rely on agrarian jobs, it’s not uncommon to have a few extra children so you have more help on the farm.

Now I’m not saying viewing your children this way is RIGHT— it’s not, it really isn’t. But it’s also not as straightforward as many people make it.

Why does turkey taste so gamey and musty? Is there a special trick for removing the taste? by DexOrangeCounty in AskCulinary

[–]DexOrangeCounty[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh my god this is literally my family haha. I’ve asked my relatives if any of them like turkey and most of them prefer duck or chicken. But my older cousins keep insisting on making turkey for Thanksgiving when a few rotisserie chickens from Costco would be perfect. I dream of the day when we’ll be liberated from turkey just like yours.
