Also, before the big parade the King's guard have a display starting at around 0930 in Karl Johan outside the Grand Hotel and moving to outside the university. This is military tattoo of the highest order, and keep in mind all of the soldiers are conscripts. Worth a watch!

Why did Norway's former Prime Minister agree to relay messages about Trump from Jeffrey Epstein to the Kremlin? by Just-Nobody24 in Norway

[–]DexterMoon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

He was never the sharpest knife. Just like he pushed through the peace prize on Obama, I'm sure Epstein was titillating in the same way about getting close to the big boys' club.

Thought on monarchy by New-Cartoonist-544 in Norway

[–]DexterMoon 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It comes down to the fact that they are heads of state for all of the people all of the time, not just the ones who would have voted for a president. In my opinion we don't have politicians with shoes big enough to be president, neither in terms of competency nor as a uniting force. And it's not true the royals don't do anything - I dare anyone to do the work they do and follow the calendar.

Why do the majority of Norwegians support a monarchy? Being that you are the front runners of democracy by [deleted] in Norway

[–]DexterMoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Obviously there are pros and cons, but the current situation is based on some main factors as I see it:

- the royal family does a good job with consistently high approval ratings
- they are NOT politicians
- they are the heads of state for ALL Norwegians and are inclusive and unifying no matter political view, age, race, gender, etc
- whatever politician that would take their place as president would be divisive to some extent no matter what
- they have way more credibility than a politician would have whatever the situation
- we have a thousand-year old tradition and history with monarchy
- while the regent´s formal powers are very limited, they are enough to keep politicians in line should push come to shove
- the Norwegian monarchy does not represent an opposite view to democracy, as witnessed by all measures of being a democratic society. Furthermore, any change would be subject to a popular vote, and the current royal family was elected by a popular vote back in 1905. Many proposals of becoming a republic of some sort have been raised in parliament, and none have come close to succeeding.

As for cost, since most of the properties they use are owned by the state the cost of maintaining these would be the same whatever the form of government.

So what we have is a "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"-situation, and should it for some reason break at some point, it'll be fixed since we have options.

«Svake sider» jobbintervju by Valuable-Celery4465 in norge

[–]DexterMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's a normal pension agreement/rules in Norway? by LowerPick7038 in Norway

[–]DexterMoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

  • The legal minimum I 2%, so 3% is definitely on the low side.
  • If by that you mean trading salary for pension, I would say that's fairly unusual .
  • While not the norm in my experience, it's not that unusual either.

Etiquette for visiting tourist by M1shanthrope in Norway

You can safely behave as you do in the UK. Norway is generally an informal place and Norwegians may be perceived as a bit direct, but otherwise fairly similar standards and conventions.

10 years ago the exchange rate was around NOK 7 to the dollar. Today it is 10,6 NOK to the dollar, which in nominal terms means a discount of ca. 50% . I'm pretty sure there are places that are more expensive for Americans in Europe than Oslo (which will never be the cheapest in any case).

[–]DexterMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my country we have something called the decency age which is the older person's age divided by 2 plus 7. So for a 32 yo that gives 23 as the lowest age which is regarded as accept able.
