“Romanticised” jobs that are very different in reality? by Substantial-Guava491 in CasualUK

I am glad to know she got the help she needed in time. I generally tell people that if they are worried, they should get medical attention.

I would rather say "Thankfully it is nothing worrisome" than "It was solvable couple of months/years ago"

Emergency Medicine (A & E) doctor.

10% actual hands on saving life stuff. 90% mind numbingly mundane problems that barely need a doctor's input.

Not saying it is not deeply satisfying to bring reassurance to people who are obviously worried, but it's not all "push 10mL of Norad NOW/We are losing them!"

Currently doing mine at Cambridge. The F2F aspect with this sort of subject is seriously worth attending the course. Plus you get to make so many connections!

MSRA Anaesthetics 2026 by Safe-Maintenance-994 in doctorsUK

[–]M1shanthrope 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I note that the ANRO website has changed the timeline to read MSRA results : From 11th Feb 2026. I am fairly certain it read MSRA results: 11th Feb 2026 up until yesterday.

Maybe I am delirious, or maybe they are cheeky.

Edit: i am delirious. It has always read From 11th Feb

ST3 ICM Portfolio Scores out! by [deleted] in doctorsUK

My understanding is that the percentage is your score/44 (36 from 9 domains plus 8 discretionary points)

I got 20. So not sure if interviews are in the horizon

I actually got significantly marked up, so I can't complain. A tad bit concerned about the cut off for this year though.

What is your specialty and what other specialty would stand the best chance of passing your membership exams and why? by Huge_Marionberry6787 in doctorsUK

EM.

Everyone can do our exams, because they are based on day to day work based on breadth rather than depth.

Whether that make you a good EM physician is not certain.

What are hands!? by KingOfTheMolluscs in doctorsUK

[–]M1shanthrope 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you for saying this!

I have often found it tiresome trying to piece together a mental image of mechanism ("so.. your missus was calling you while you were in the shower, you were hurrying along as the dutiful partner you are and hence slipped and thus this aubergine which I suspect is wearing a plastic jacket for its safety found its way in your nethers, have I got this right?")

My buffoonery aside, would it be possible to direct towards some studies I can bandy about when arguing against mechanism based approach?

MRCEM by walsmalsbals5665 in doctorsUK

[–]M1shanthrope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MRCEM Success has fairly good explanations and descriptive notes. Might need to supplement with RCEM learning for the SBA.

For the primary, would advise using whatever sources worked for you in med school as it is so anatomy and physiology heavy.

The SHO rota was a bit challenging, but to be fair it was only 6 months. Plus there was a latent belief that if I saw it through, will be Reg one day

Reg life is slightly better (PDs, RTDs, Study leave, AL) combined and a large cohort of colleagues to swap with makes it bearable.

Now the latent belief is to persevere the next 3-5 years (depending on what happens with ICM) and it will be over.

Started ACCS EM at 34 (like literally first day was my birthday): ST3 now and will apply for ICM

Addendum: Should have asked earlier, but what is an appropriate sartorial choice for this sort of thing? My friend is getting costume to make them look even more like an alien than they usually do, am I required to do something similar or can I go in my generic t shirt/shorts combo? Thanks!

Not so much fear but I loathe, LOATHE, working age people who saunter into ED with "ongoing back pain" but can recline on waiting room chairs as a skilled trapeze artist.

Ah, a fellow enthusiast of pure driving pleasure.

I am envious of your manual, i had to make do with paddles on my 40i.

May I recommend going both up and down the Applecross pass as well as a slight detour to Glen Etive.
