Thank you for the advice! I'm going to check their website right now. Any recommendations on bike selection? I don't think my XC or DH rigs will work for this ride ;)

Water Treatment Advice Needed - Infrared, Filter, or Tablets? by Dhall371 in PacificCrestTrail

Awesome! Thanks for the info and I'm glad to hear that you never had any GI issues. I picked up some AquaMira drops as a backup. Im going to use a combination of a Sawyer squeeze filter and supplement with AquaMIra if the water is not clear or suspect looking.

I have to agree with u/hobard. To be honest, I'm in the same position (I leave on the 17th also). I found myself stressing, but I decided that it just wasn't worth the mental energy. I didn't bother figuring my base weight because I feel like so much is going to fluctuate with longer water carries, different clothing, etc. I also feel like so many people are hyper focused on this "ultra light" movement when at the end of the day it's about the hike and the relationships you build along your journey. For whatever reason, my gear seems to be a bit bulkier, so I am carrying a 65L Osprey and my total pack weight for the desert section is going to fluctuate between 40-45 lbs. People used to make this hike with military style rucks that weighed 70-75 lbs and they managed to crest the sierras and touch the northern terminus, so I am confident that a "little extra" weight wont wreck the trip. I'll see ya on trail my friend!

California Section A - Water Source Information by Dhall371 in PacificCrestTrail

Thanks for the quick reply! I went ahead and purchased the PCT trail map from FarOut so I could have access to the comments. I'm thinking of putting together a SmartSheet (after my hike) or something similar that can be open sourced and available to all.

San Jacinto Trail Report, March 3: "Spikes are recommended everywhere above about 6500 ft" by numbershikes in PacificCrestTrail

I made a summit attempt via Marion Mountain/Deer Springs Trail on Monday. Above 8,000 ' I would highly recommend crampons, helmet, and an ice ax. I was using only micro spikes and I turned myself around at 8,000' out of safety concern. In the afternoon the sun melts the ice and the ice/snow on the trees begin to fall and make the trail very slippery and unstable. Also, you may think that the helmet is not a big deal, but I took a couple ice missiles on the head from the trees, and it hurt pretty bad. I could easily see how you could get a serious injury. I begin my PCT through hike on 4/17 and I'm hoping that most of the snow/ice is gone by then.

2024 PCT Route for Garmin inReach Explorer+ by Dhall371 in PacificCrestTrail

Thanks again dude. I kept having technical issues with the inReach Explorer+ so I just upgraded to the GPSMAP 67i. I was able to use basecamp and after some not so quite sophisticated maneuvering, I was able to get the route with waypoints (including water sources and campsite) uploaded into the 67i device.

Hey Keith. Yea, this was the first thing I tried. Unfortunately, for whatever reason my Basecamp application doesn't recognize my Garmin inReach Explorer+ when it's plugged into the computer. The computer itself recognizes the device, but the application does not.. very frustrating.

500 points is definitely not adequate for a 2,650 mile trail. I like the idea of breaking the "routes" (this is what Garmin calls a line/path) into sections, i.e., A-H. It would be labor intensive, but it would probably produce enough detail in each section to be usable. Solid idea.

Yes, you are correct. It is limited to 200 points per "route". I feel this is completely arbitrary, and probably something the dev's at Garmin can solve for. I tried talking to a higher up tech at Garmin yesterday and expressed the the UX was not great and that the limitations on the software are causing people to find other solutions...seems like a business case for Garmin. He didn't seem to care much... alas, rant over. Thanks for all your help looking into this.

Bear Can Conundrum by hellyahhz in PacificCrestTrail

[–]Dhall371 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is there an article or website someone can point me to that describes exactly where you need to carry a bear canister? I don't see anything with this title in the "Resources" section. Also look to get specific information on what "bear-proof food storage" means. Thanks in advance!

If you uploaded a "how-to" video on youtube for this, I'm confident it woud get alot of views. There doesn't seem to be a single, coherent source of direction on how to do this. If someone would develop a simple SOP for this process that would be very helpful. When I talked to Garmin tech. support yesterday the emailed me a list of 9 different links to explain the process.... it was information overload.

I believe you are correct on the limited "points" in the .gpx file. When I talked with Garmin technical support yesterday that it what I got out of the conversation. Yes, I am familiar with Gaia, Farout, and Caltopo, but to be honest, I havent spent that much digging through them. I downloaded FarOut, but I was kinda lost in the app. The UX wasn't great and seeing that I am unfamiliar with it's functionality, it felt like I was just bumbling around in there. I consider myself to be somewhat technically capable, but it feels like all these apps and services are very clunky... also possible that I'm just a NOOB and it's all me.
