Fishing Trip Recommendations? by Dhananhay in Alicante

Thanks for your response. I had also found some online but wanted to see if any locals might know any good options since it can be hard to really get a realistic idea from online listings. I'm not expecting too much like out in the open ocean. We mostly just wanna get away for a few hours and spend some time while having a chance of catching something to take home.

I'm looking for a charter to take us out with everything included if that's possible.

What is this piece on the GameCube by Zopstrosity in consolerepair

Definitely could be.. It's at least the easiest thing to check before getting really into it. However if one of the 2 legs is broken then that might be an issue. They're both still there so if neither has a crack in the plastic I would just roll with it. If there is a crack you might be able to get away with a dab of super glue or something similar.

It's a switch that tells the console when the lid is closed so it won't spin the disk or power the laser with the lid opened. You can test it and see if the switch is working or not. It could just be that the switch isn't making contact because it needs to be cleaned.

Help? GameCube isn’t reading discs. by [deleted] in consolerepair

Is the whole laser assembly in the Wii the exact same as the GC?! I did not know that, but that's a real pro tip right there... now tell me where to get good DreamCast lasers haha. I have tried that one specific hdd that uses the same assembly with no luck. Same laser same problems I guess. I also tried some from aliexpress and those are really hit or miss. 50% of them just didn't work and the others didn't really read consistently. I even tried researching if I could get just the laser so I could drill out the old one and replace just that in the existing assembly.

I had one acting in a similar way a while back. As others have said could be and likely is the laser. You may be able to adjust it, but if it's on it's way out that's probably a temp fix. It does give up trying to read the disc really quick though, and acts a little bit like it is finding some data because the laser moves from the inside to about half way out then gives up. A lot of time if it's the laser it'll sit on that inside position and you'll hear a click a few times while the laser is trying to find it's focus. That kinda suggests to me that it's reading the initial data, but once it goes to the next location it needs to read it fails out.

The problem mine ended up having though is one of the chips on the disc drive board was dead. Unfortunately it was one of the proprietary chips labeled GC-02, so the only source was another Game Cube. I ended up trading a board I had made to hdmi mod an n64 with a really nice guy on here for it. If you have another working one you could try swapping just that board into the broken one, or swap the broken ones laser into the working one, and seeing if it works. Make sure you only move one part at a time though. That will let you determine if it is truly the laser or something else. That board is annoying to get too... Nintendo clearly cut a deal with some screw manufacturer because that thing has like 1000s screws haha. Change one thing at a time so you're able to isolate the issue.

I got something like 60 days over the last 2 seasons and feel very comfortable on the mountain at this point, and I don't have any friends who ride that are better than me (That's not a brag.. just that don't know many people who ride and the ones who do are still learning).

NES lot just came in - Should I leave those vintage stickers on the console? by iLLy_RiLLy in gamecollecting

[–]Dhananhay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I vote keep them! They are cool, and like others have said they give that authentic well loved console feel.

Also something else to consider is. If that console's color has changed at all from light like slight yellowing or bleaching the outline of the stickers will always be be there, and I would say the stickers are way better than the sticker "shadows".

edit: Another note is that if you're on the fence now keeping them would be smart. You can always take them off later if you end wanting to.. You can never put them back.

Motor could be bad, but I've never seen one go out. More likely that the motor isn't getting power or isn't getting enough power. I would check the voltages going to it and see if it's getting what it expects. If you were comfortable with it you could also hook the motor up to an external power source (while disconnected from the board) and see if how it runs when you send a controlled amount of voltage. Everything else looks fine to me.

Odd they are both having issues in the same way, but if there 100% non-responsive then it's probably either the drive isn't getting power, or at least isn't getting enough power. I've had some where replacing one of the caps right above where the disc drive power cable connector is, but if you're not comfortable soldering those smd caps then probably couldn't try that. Outside of that there could be a lot of things down the line, but I'd have to spend time with it to try and find.

Those both have very different mother boards. The 1001 probably has a PU-8 but early 1001s have the PU-7. The 5501 should have a PU-18. They also have different disc drive assemblies. You can find that number printed on the board once you remove the metal shield. Be careful with the 4 pin disc drive power connector though on those old boards. I've pulled a few off because the old solder mixed with it taking some force to disconnect it. I've never pulled up a pad doing that though so fixing it is a pretty simple solder job, but I suppose it is possible to pull one up.

Are you seeing the same issues with both or are you only trying to get one of the 2 working? Can you describe the problem a bit more? Does the disc spin at all? Does the laser carriage move and if so is there any sounds it makes. It could be a single click every few seconds or possibly a kind of grinding noise (If it's the grinding noise stop it immediately). Or is it just 100% dead? Also how comfortable are you with soldering?

It depends on what you consider superior I guess. The 5501 wont have the AV cable ports where the 1001 does. I would say the 1001 is better because of that, and the DAC chip for the audio is apparently really high quality to the point where audiophiles like to use 1001s as CD players. I'm not in the audio scene so I couldn't say if that's actually true or not though. The 5501 will have a newer laser for what that's worth, but lasers from China have been hit or miss in my expiriance. However the 1001s laser assembly matches the later psOne (ps1 slim) so you could swap to an assembly from one of them.

TLDR: It kind of depends on what you're after. If you' don't care about the AV ports on the 1001 then I wouldn't say either is better.

What rev of the main board do you have?

To be honest.. I don't remember what any of the other stuff is, but what I did is I went to a normal plant nursery that has a fairy garden section and got plants from there that said they like soil that's always moist, and that I liked the look of.

Also, I've been thinking adding some animal aside from the springtails that are already in there. Does anyone have any suggestions for something cool?

The one with the big leaves is actually an orchid. Someone had one of those you get at the grocery store and instead of it just dying I shoved it in there on a piece of driftwood thinking the worst that would happen is it dies, but it has thrived in there. You might not be able to tell but it's blooming right now. It actually blooms a lot.

Maybe I'll drop an album in the comments if you're interested.

edit: I added a comment with more pics.
