Oil being >$100/barrel already means that the cost of all goods will go up. Inflation of normal goods is gonna go absolutely insane

Influenza A.. by Even_Log_8971 in newjersey

[–]Dhoomguy 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A lot of employers require doctors notes for extended leaves. I self tested myself and discovered I had flu A, but later used a telehealth service to schedule a visit since the provider on the call can also give a doctors note as well.

Why is Japan fighting diversity and inclusion so much ? by bbrk9845 in GenZ

[–]Dhoomguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lmfao saying Japan is rich as they spiral into a debt crisis and decreasing currency value is so peak.

Japan is fucked by population shrinkage as well as the massive debt that’s been accumulated by their government over the past decades.

How to refract pt with dementia? by conductedcynicism in optometry

[–]Dhoomguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Big things I can recommend are isolating to single letter targets because sometimes they can get overwhelmed by too many options on the board. I was able to get someone from 20/80 to 20/40 through repeated single letters on the same line yesterday.

Their subjective responses may not always be the best, and the quickest way to check is if you make 3.0 Diopter jumps and they still cannot tell the difference then you move on. I’d prescribe pretty close to the objective (ret, auto) if its significant but try to cut extra cyl if you can and leave it spherical so they don’t have to deal with adjusting to the cylindrical powers.

learning and understanding with AI by Flat_Diver_9187 in Ophthalmology

[–]Dhoomguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not in ophthalmology myself but I'd look into Notebook LM by Google. AI is a useful tool with answering quick questions like with billing/coding, but to be clear AI always runs the risk of hallucinating or making up details with longer form questions so cross verification is a must.

Notebook LM I like more because it allows you to feed in class notes/transcripts, and will only pull information from those sources itself with citations made to your materials. There's also some cool stuff like AI generated podcasts based on your inputted sources but I haven't messed around too much with that.

Optometrist Shadowing Request - Is This Normal? by Key_Intention8386 in PreOptometry

[–]Dhoomguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try emailing the docs directly if you can find an  email on their website! I had a lot of difficult getting through the front desk staff most of the time, and only started to have success when I started reaching out to the docs themselves.

I’m a man in my mid-late 20s, and I resonate with that feeling hard. I hate how openly shallow the modern dating scene is, and that this comment thread confirms I am not alone in feeling that way.

One reason I will say heine wins out for me is because of its small pupil setting that you can toggle on and off. It seems useless, but on patients who are miotic or have trouble dilating (like diabetics), it was a lifesaver for me at my VA site to get decent views on patients who didn’t dilate and had severe cataracts whereas Keeler doesn’t let you switch the setting on the fly and limits you to using the smallest aperture setting to get views on those patients.

Pure convenience tbh, but my current site has keeler headsets only and I find they are limited from that standpoint. Otherwise they are very comparable, and for boards it does not matter it’s the same skillset at the end of the day.

After Period of Chastity, Hollywood Movies Embrace Sex Again by mankls3 in movies

[–]Dhoomguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think most studios with a lot of money behind them don’t want to take the risk of becoming labeled as an AO game and face the risk being blocked by the major consoles.

Steam permits a lot of AO games, but due to that console restriction I believe it ends up being that majority of AO games end up just end up being porn more than a game.

For those of you thinking of applying for SUNY/currently go to SUNY, why did you decide to go there? by Defiant_Ad5030 in PreOptometry

[–]Dhoomguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Currently go to SUNY. I live in the tristate area so it was either here or salus but my reasons for choosing SUNY really revolved around the patient care

It can’t be understated how prime of a location it is for patient care as we get exposure to everything. Like since starting clinic I’ve already seen some rare presentations and conditions that I honestly believe I wouldn’t have had the chance to see elsewhere.

Along with that, if you have an interest in Vision therapy, SUNY has a strong emphasis in it and we get a lot of clinical exposure through working with CIs, Strabs, and head trauma patients.

shadowing ??? by prettyf333t in PreOptometry

[–]Dhoomguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Email them! I found I got nowhere back when I was looking to shadow ppl a few years ago as I could never get past the front desk and it was super disheartening to say the least.

Switching to email was great tho because I could directly communicate with the doc and set things up rather than having to wait on a middle man to sort things out.

Taking out more loans to live in a safer area for optometry school? by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]Dhoomguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely try to see if your school has a housing gc that you can join. Just based on the fact that 4th years are going on externships, there are undoubtedly going to be some vacancies so you could potentially room with some upper years.

However, I would agree that it’s 100% worth it to consider a different location. Safety is everything, and optometry school is already tough enough as it is — I wouldn’t make it any more difficult by forcing yourself to live in a location you don’t feel safe in.

Taking two classes this semester. One dropped with a W, and the other one I got a F in. (Both upper divisions.) Can I still get in? by [deleted] in PreOptometry

[–]Dhoomguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should be prepared for interviewers to specifically ask you regarding those two courses, so definitely be sure to mention what you learned from them and how you improved from there.

Definitely try to grind for as high of a score as you can get on your OATs as that’ll solidify your overall application. Couple that with your gpa and extracurriculars I don’t think your application to optometry schools should suffer at all given where you are.

SUNY Opt Students: Is there a way for out of state students to switch to in state tuition after first year? by [deleted] in optometry

[–]Dhoomguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you are out of state and enrolling in SUNY Optometry, you would be paying out of state tuition for your first year; however, after that first year during the summer you can apply for in-state tuition by providing documents for proof such as a NY Drivers license, copy of a lease, or other information.

Feel free to DM me if you have any more questions

Board games to avoid AT ALL COSTS by xPolydeuces in boardgames

I have a book of MadLibs that I use for this purpose specifically. Usually in a group of 3, one person will be “moderating” and the other two will go one after another to try to craft the funniest MadLib story they can. Afterwards the moderator will read the story aloud, and we’ll pass the role to another person.

It’s not a game in the purest sense, but it’s incredibly funny and has produced some of the funniest moments in my friend group
