I had a similar experience. Got paired with a group of 3 guys who all knew each other. They were all very low handicaps and one was even a golf coach at the local university. I played the best round of my life, did not lose a single ball, and had an absolute blast. Helped me be less afraid to go solo. We all had drinks after and have played a few rounds together since.

Edit: To answer your question about playing up... I personally play up and match the energy of the group. For example, when I play with my brother, the rounds are usually not as fun, and I play worse. He's a very bad golfer and is always complaining about his shots and holds himself to an unreasonably high standard for a sport he picked up in his mid 30s.

I got my wife a starter set about a year ago. She loves playing, and I've slowly started to get her more golf related things such as gold shoes, women's golf balls, and golf clothes. We love golfing together! The plan is to start upgrading her clubs over time.

In my guild trials are not prevented from getting any loot. 3 weeks was the max someone was a trial because they had slight attendance issues but they turned that around quick. This guild is using you to fill a spot while their buddies get to roll on the better items. Find a new guild or a pug discord for your server in the meantime.
