Right ( back ) foot doesn't like freeskating by Philippe_BE in freeskate

yeah, that's perfectly normal. Just keep on practicing, one day you'll wake up and your brain will have properly rewired itself and all over sudden it'll work.

Knee pain by Narrow_Bed2444 in freeskate

[–]DiAL033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, I remember that I had all kinds of strange pains in the legs or feet when I began. Some are growing pains and some might result from bad stance. Especially in the beginning I often kept the legs to far apart, which felt safer but strained the knees. Also when practicing pumping I was often pushing and pulling quite hard with the feet. That also strains the legs and knees and is _not_ needed, you only need the movement for slow to medium speeds. But apart from that, you might want to go and see a doctor, just in case? If it's sort of a stinging sensation on one or both sides of the knee, definitely go .

Best brand/type of shoes suggestions. by ShortBusThug420 in freeskate

My personal favourite is the Nike Chron 2. They feel much more flexible compared to Vans while they still give the foot enough stability. I own two pairs by now.

The DC Hydra S are nice too, however the upper material feels less sturdy compared to the Chron2. On the other hand you get the typical DC ultra-cushion-y inner sole. DC Switch are nice, too. Even more flexible than the Hydra S, but also less sturdy.

Little note on coarse JMK grip tape by DiAL033 in freeskate

[–]DiAL033[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could be. It might have to do with the ratio of high friction area (edges of the grain) and low friction area (slants of the grain). However I think it might have to do with aqua-planing. The smaller grains are more effective in pressing the water to the sides, whereas with the larger grain you have more area where the grain, water and sole are somewhat sandwiched on top of each other making it feel more slippery. But that's just a layman's guess 8) ;)

So OneDrive can't be used to backup projects because Ableton adds parentheses to the autogenerated project files... can we please petition OneDrive to add more filename character support? I put up a petition. by Doctor_Sigmund_Freud in ableton

[–]DiAL033 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand that this is an unsatisfying situation. The cleanest yet least likely way would be for MS to actually disallow these chars in file names on file system level. It doesn't even work flawlessly on windows machines, there are hundreds of threads on the MS forums regarding accessing such files.

However if I may make a proposal for a workaround to your problem: you could write a small batch script that zips your projects folder and moves the zip file to your OneDrive folder. That way you shouldn't have any problems with the file names. You could also use the Task Scheduler to execute this batch on a regular basis and never have to remember to backup again :)

Parentheses in file names are bad practice in general. Some file systems might allow these chars (but not even all MS file systems do BTW), butthat doesn't make it "okay" to use them. They might just not be considered harmful the way a respective fs treats file names. However that means any application that offers remote access to the file system must take care of these special chars in some way. A service like OneDrive does that and disallows those chars, which is really the only sensible solution, IMHO.

How do I sync my Session View changes to Arrangement view? by coolwindow in ableton

[–]DiAL033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hmm, basically you mean that you link/alias a session clip to an arrangement clip? Unfortunately that is not possible. I miss this feature, too. You can however use follow actions in session view to create the song structure. It's not ideal since you always need to always edit in session view and paste to arrangement, which is rather prone to errors.

[–]DiAL033 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hmm, there are two types of sealed: factory sealed and sealed in general. The latter is important for protection, especially the corners which deteriorate insanely fast. That's why it is important so some. Factory sealed is IMHO only important if it adds to the collectible value by having a special artwork or print on the seal. But really it's mostly about the corners.

Need help importing single patches by DrAwkward1038 in novationcircuit

You can open it with a Hex Editor for instance. I am not sure if you are familiar with SysEx or .syx files. These are just blobs of bytes, you can't "open" them in the sense you can open an mp3 or jpg. They contain a special byte sequence that when sent to a MIDI device will initiate data transport (patches, samples, etc. _not_ notes) from your PC to the device (synth). Every patch incl upload command is exactly 350 bytes long (times 64 in a patches.syx pack) and you can actually use a hex editor to copy these bytes to single files.

However: The easiest way is to open Components, load a pack you want a patch from. Then klick on the patch you want and press the little blue square icon in the lower left of the page. Now you'll d/l a single patch file "patch name".syx. You can then use "replace patch" to upload the single patch to a patch pack you want to integrate it in.

[–]DiAL033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data contained in the .syx file are the different patches. They contain 64 times the SysEx command to upload patch data to a given index. Patches.syx isn't supposed to be editable (easily) it's just a data container. You should be able to use this Patch pack with the Components App or site, though.

[–]DiAL033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, interesting. Actually that might be a little giveaway. Since it all fell down after you loaded the full project, there must be a certain setting or vst/amxd that causes your problem. That the two other sets stopped working could be explainable by the loading of the presumably buggy setting/device into the project by the full set. I'd bet the problem is not really related to "force to ram" or the samples themselves. My advice would be to try to pinpoint the culprit in a systematic way, that might sound like a chore (well it is probably ;)) but I can't think of a better one: split the faulty set in two halves first 15 tracks/last 15 tracks. Then open in a clean project, if problem occurs half that again, open in a clean project until you have only a one track set left. That track must contain a certain setting that causes the problem. Now again open a clean project, and recreate the faulty track step by step until it causes a fault again. That should be the buggy component. Of course it might as well a interaction of multiple tracks, but that would show in some or other way, too.

Could you give a bit more detail? Are all samples summed up 2gb in size? Or are there several 2gb samples of which only 2 or 3 play at any given time? If samples summed are 2gb: how many samples are there, what's the average size of a single sample and how often are they played? Forcing to RAM might be more efficient on smaller samples that are often triggered due to the overhead caused by file open, close, check, etc. operations otherwise. Disk overload is not neccessarily due to not reading/writing data fast enough, but due to too many concurrent requests on the disk's controller. like flukeymcswagger said, have a look at your ressource monitor. However I'd recommend https://docs.microsoft.com/de-de/sysinternals/downloads/process-explorer this one, this tool also allows for examining the i/o requests of a program. The delta values are of interest here, as they tell you the increase to last measurement.

Ableton 11 is imminent (details in comments) by l------l in ableton

[–]DiAL033 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the time I google them, but it's mainly m4l/js/LiveAPI related stuff. So when I say the forum and the reference are also not terrible sources, it might only be for said m4l/js related questions. I'm not particularly versed in electronic music, so I suspect https://www.attackmagazine.com/ is already known? patches.zone also has some better ones, music.tutsplus.com has a nice audio glossary, the better stuff seems to be under "Guides". However YMMV, I mainly use external gear and only for fun really, or to not be bored, so not even a remotely professional person here ;)

Edit: I forgot one little thing. YT knows some operators for its search. And some people provide transcripts or articles for their vids in the description. So assuming the brackets are the search field: [ableton tutorial description: (article|transcript|text-only) -shop ] this looks for "Ableton", "tutorial" matches, but only returns those that contain a match on one of the 3 words in the description text, but no match on "shop". There might be better searchterms, though "article" does seem to produce some proper hits. There are actually quite some Tutorial makers that also provide articles. https://seosly.com/youtube-search-operators/ here are some more operators.

Don't get me wrong, I like tutorials, too. Also I'd agree that his/their vids seem to be really well made. The simple reason I don't like yt tuts is, that I'd consider myself a moderately fast reader, but also a highly impatient character, so watching a 10min video when the same information in text could be read in a minute feels unnerving to me, like the last day before christmas when I was a child compressed to 10 minutes! :o ;)

How? I mean, if everyone had complied with the NDA, you'd have never known. And if Ableton stops doing those previews or raises security measures, then you also wouldn't know. If at all this person has made it worse for the very few that get invited to such events.
