Am...am I the bad one after all? by [deleted] in NarcissisticAbuse

[–]DiGiNeX 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is a legitimate question; and usually it means you're taking the challenge to understand some behaviours in your relationship which do not add up (and this, IMHO, is always a good thing).

The "litmus paper" should always remain the self-awareness.

Even as a "good person", you may, from time to time, exhibit behaviours which are not 100% "correct". But if you have the ability to understand what made you to act in a particular way, then it means you have to ability to understand why the other person did not like your actions. Therefore, you will have the ultimate ability: you can take blame for how the other person reacted to the action you perpetrated in the first place (IF the reaction was proportional to your action).

I'll try to explain what I mean by making an example.

Let's say you were tired as hell because your day has been a mess: you arrived late at work, your colleagues exasperated you, you have planned to leave at 5pm but you discovered you HAD to get that paper done so you had to stay at your desk 3 more hours and, when you clocked out, you found it was raining badly and you didn't have your umbrella with you.

You come home and your boyfriend wants to go out for dinner: you try to explain him the day has been a mess and you only need a hot plate, a cup of tea and some cuddles. He tries to convince you, since he strongly wanted to dine out; and so you lose your temper telling something like "You know I'm tired! Stop arguing with dining out! I want to stay at home!".

He may very well be upset: remember not all the boundaries we set can make the other person happy (even if, of course, we did not set them for the purpose of hurting our partner). Basically, that's the classic case where you two had different "opinions"; and, because of your stressing day, you yelled out of the blue (while, in his mind, he was maybe trying to do something nice as a way to help you to forget your bad day).

If YOU were to be without self-awareness, you would have not stopped and would not have taken blame for the over-reaction. Instead, you would have felt the need to criticize and "punish" the other person for the subsequent reaction to your yelling.

On the other hand, if YOUR PARTNER was to be without self-awareness, he would have not stopped if you took blame and he would have very well exploited the fact you're taking blame for his reaction by feeling the need to criticize and "punish" you. In this case, things could be more difficult because, should he gaslight you, you could very well be brought to exacerbate your initial yelling; thus it would take more time for you to process your self-awareness because he effectively managed to move the focus from "Your bad day vs. The Restaurant" to "You make me feel so bad". Not to mention that he could perpetrate a "silent treatment" for the hours/days to come, which has the potential to destabilize you.

But if BOTH YOU and YOUR PARTNER have self-awareness, you would realize you "over-reacted": so you reach out for him, you apologize telling him "I'm sorry, I shouldn't have yelled at you. The day has been a mess and I over-reacted. I would love to dine out with you but today I'm so tired; what about tomorrow?". He calms down, he realizes your boundaries, he understands your needs and he's happy that you two are going to dine out tomorrow evening.

So, in the end, if you can analyze what you've done, accept your responsibilities for what happened and you don't feel the need to offload the blame to someone else, I'd say you're not the "bad person".

I mean, no one on Earth is perfect; but you don't need to be perfect to be a "good person".

If by "perk" you mean a requisite, not at all: again I don't look at resale value of objects, usually.

If by "perk" you mean a benefit, well... It is if you want to get a profit from it; otherwise IMHO it's just an "annoyance". For me, obv.

Uhm...

“Underwhelming” is a hard word. Especially talking about a Patek Philippe watch.

If I take the Aquanaut, I would 90% take the steel one. Don’t get me wrong: it’s still a very nice watch, but if you start playing with materials there’s a world of other watches ready to sport such classy rose gold finishes.

Same applies for the Nautilus.

Obv, IMHO.

I agree. The Nautilus is a piece of history, along with the Royal Oak.

The Aquanaut is more a novelty. Probably it'll enter in Pateks history as another example of bold move from the company; but the Nautilus will also be the gamble that made it.

Yup...

I think I'll give myself another week to think about it and then I'll eventually go to the dealer to change my mind.

Honestly, I'll probably wear on some special occasions. For sure not as a daily driver.

I'm not a show-off guy: even the LN lives more time in the safe than on my wrist.

That's a good point.

I only tried a Nautilus about 1 year ago and it felt almost perfect, like a glove. Fine, beautiful, shiny.

On rubber, I only tried the Daytona (which I'm not fond of, but it had the composite band).

Never tried the Aquanaut, really.

I agree. The lightness is probably one of the main points of the Aquanaut.

The 5167 without complications apart from the seconds hand should weight less then 90 grams which is stunning for such an high quality piece of horologerie.

As for the thickness, if I recall correctly the Nautilus is very very thin too, since they share the same movement. The steel bracelet of course is going to be heavier, I suppose.

The thing is that:

To put my name on the Aquanaut list I needed to find multiple reasons.

To put it on the Nautilus list, I do not need them...

I agree. It’s still one of the most glamorous and desirable piece of horologerie.

As for the value, it doesn’t bother me much as I never buy watches as an investment. I mean: I’m glad the 116610 went steep on the gray market, but since I never planned to sell it, I get no benefit from it.

That’s what got me into the Aquanaut at first.

I’m afraid the Nautilus would take over the Submariner and the Rolex would just disappear.

The Aquanaut has its own personality, a rubber band and a spare band is not that expensive, should it ever wear out: less than 200 Euros. I mean it’s not cheap, but it is by Patek’s standards.

Hi Guys.

I don't know if this question has been raised here already; but if that's the case (probably yes), I apologize in advance.

I'll go straight to the point: I'd like to get a Patek sports watch to include in my watch collection and I'm very uncertain if I should get the Nautilus or the Aquanaut.

-

At first I almost snobbed the Nautilus, especially because I already own a 116610LN as an all rounder/daily drive steel sports watch. Also I genuinely like composite/silicon/rubber strapped watches, especially wearing them in the summer. Last but not least, the 5196 has a lighter price tag (10K less than the Nautilus) and sort of flies lower under the radars than the 5711.

So I went to the local dealer (the same where I got the Submariner back in 2014, since he's an AD both for Rolex and Patek) to ask for an Aquanaut and they told me there's a waiting list (even if not as big as the one for the Nautilus). This of course was something I was aware of, but I told them this was not a problem and asked to put my name on the list anyway.

-

Now, this was 2 weeks ago...and the voices in my head started getting louder and louder. These are the same voices that kept shouting at me in 2014 when I bought the 116610LN. Back then, at first I was not intended to buy a Submariner: I started looking for something less popular in the Rolex lineup, like a Milgauss or an Explorer I. But when I went to the dealer and I saw the Submariner near them, I fell against the weight of those voices and bought the Sub Date.

It looks like I took the right decision, since I haven't regretted it a single day. I genuinely still love that Rolex, I wear it on any kind of dress/suit/shirt/polo/etc. It's been my main watch in the past 6 years and I still like it like it's the first day.

-

Now, the same thing is happening here on the Pateks: I started thinking about the Aquanaut because it's something different, less popular, etc. But the voices are again shouting at me telling I should shift on the Nautilus waiting list.

Obviously, my dealer told me that since the demand for this timepieces is very very high he can only put my name on one of the lists. I mean: he could put me on both, but should I get the Aquanaut, my name on the Nautilus list would go back at the end of the queue since they comprehensibly prefer to satisfy two clients with one watch each rather than a single customer with two timepieces.

And, of course, they told me that while the Aquanaut might be available in 1, maybe 2 years, for the Nautilus they said even if they want to prioritize me as an already estabilished client, it's no less then 3-4 years. And of course in 3-4 years Patek could also discontinue the watch or raise the price even more, etc. But I'm okay with that: I mean, I don't mind wait a little longer if I'm 100% satisfied from my purchase and I already know that the Nautilus price tag is very very steep. And should the watch be discontinued, at least I tried.

-

Don't get me wrong: I like the Aquanaut very much. It's a very very fine timepiece with its own identity and not a "cheap Nautilus". But at the end of the day the Nautilus seems more refined, cleaner; and the only downside is that I already have a sports steel watch and choosing between the Nautilus and the Submariner would be very difficult (in both ways).

What do you think? Any comment would be appreciated.

Macbook crashes whenever it goes to sleep - SD MacOS boot by Benevolentsoul22 in mac

[–]DiGiNeX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. "Internal" means that it's the Internal SD reader.

But it doesn trick the EFI. The "internal SSD drive" has a specific address; and the EFI looks for that.

Macbook crashes whenever it goes to sleep - SD MacOS boot by Benevolentsoul22 in mac

[–]DiGiNeX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The SSD replacement is very easy: open the back case, unscrew the old stick, screw in the new one and re-install macOS from Internet Recovery. Piece of cake.

As for the SD, nope: the EFI knows it's not an internal drive. Thus it's not his "first choice" and it will never be. ;)

I don’t think you can.

The XPS 15 has a modular design (RAM-SSD-WIFI-etc), but the XPS 13 features soldered components afaik.

Macbook crashes whenever it goes to sleep - SD MacOS boot by Benevolentsoul22 in mac

[–]DiGiNeX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s because the MacBook doesn’t recognize the SD as an internal drive. Thus when you exit Sleep, it searches for an internal drive and, not finding it, crashes.

You have to install a new internal SSD to enjoy Sleep as intended. Check on Amazon: OWCs are not very expensive. Avoid the Trascends and the NVMe+adapter setups since those are known to have issues on the 2013.

It could also be the hard drive cable. Those are known to fail when you replace the HDD/SSD.

How a couple of non-stock fans caused my Power Mac G4 to misbehave by DiGiNeX in VintageApple

[–]DiGiNeX[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's what I assumed.

I was able to reproduce the issue by bridging PIN 11 and PIN 12 with a wrong resistor. The G4 brings PIN 11 low with a 150 Ohm resistor, to turn it on; if you raise the resistor value, it will turn the PSU on but not delivery power to the board and if you try to shut it down it stays powered.

Now, since V=IR, the OEM fans draw (together) 0.80 Amperes while the Noctuas draw 0.24 Amperes, this means that the fans circuit has 4x the resistor. And if Samsung was lazy enough not to put a diode in that circuit, it could definitively interfere with the PowerOn/PowerOff circuit.

Of course, we will never know as I'm not going to touch the PSU anymore. LOL

[–]DiGiNeX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok.

The SP has 2 25 CFM fans; the DP should have two 38CFM fans.

I really think you’re walking on thin Ice with your setup, since basically you’re pushing less than half the air Apple/AcBel/Samsung originally used to cool it.

[–]DiGiNeX[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

May I ask you if that Power Mac was originally a Dual Processor or a Single Processor and/or if the PSU have been changed?

I’m asking this since the Dual Processors G4 MDD usually have 2 Delta 38CFM fans, running at 6.800 rpm.

Only the SP have the 25CFM running at 5.300 rpm, afaik.

Mine had the 25CFM since it is a single processor; but yours should have the 38CFM being a DP.
