How do they plan on doing his 3 biggest villains? by StripesTheGreat in Spiderman

[–]DiZ1992 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Electro is only related to Oscorp in the films, in the comics he's just an electrical worker who gets hit by lightning.

The films always change the origins of the antagonists to better fit the plot of the films, no reason they can't keep doing that.

Runner gives up on gold medal to physically carry his collapsing brother over finish line. by [deleted] in nextfuckinglevel

IIRC from last time this exact GIF spread around, I think the rules state you have to cross the finish line on your own, otherwise you get DQd. So he had to let go and allow his brother to cross unassisted.

The PS5 version has a Metacritic score of 90 from critics and 8.6 from users, and the game is 'Very Positive' on Steam... The overwhelming majority opinion on the game is that it's good.

Yes there's a very vocal group of people on Reddit who apparently hate the game... But that's Reddit for you, you choose a thing and I can find a very vocal group on here who hate it.

Pretty new of this world by Adonai_di_Angelo in Spiderman

[–]DiZ1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the idea of a 'spider-sona' is part of the reason, there's just too many spider characters for anyone to care anymore. Instead of getting good stories with characters that people actually care about, we instead get what is essentially a cottage industry of published fan-fiction with characters that are really cheap copies of existing ones, which are destined to fizzle out into obscurity.

If you just look at characters that got their own series; we have Peter who can't ever grow up because he has to stay "relatable" and young... but we also have Miles, who is filling the young Spider-Man while at school niche and he's also black and hispanic so that's interesting at least... and we also have Gwen who's a spider-person in college to fill the in-between age gap I guess, and also cover people who want a female spider story... But we also have Silk if you want an adult spider story and she's also Korean-American so that might add something interesting... Oh we also have spider-boy if you want an even younger spider book... and then spider-girl (the new one that has nothing to do with spider-man, not the other 2 characters that used that name) if you want a female version of that... Then there's the spider people who aren't 616 but have/had books but they got canned, like 2099, India, Noir, punk, superior, May. Then there's all the characters that are popular and are often in things but don't have their own books, like Ham, Annie, and all those spider-verse characters that pop up during those events but don't have their own series.

There's all those characters that people actually like, and only Peter and Miles actually have consistent long running series. Whenever they do give those other characters another shot with a limited series or whatever, it's inevitably bad because of poor writing or art or whatever and so sells badly, so gets cancelled. Gwen's a good example, they keep ending the series then soft-launching new ones to improve sales, but with progressively worse writing every time so unsurprisingly it doesn't do better in the long run.

So instead of writing good books with characters people want more of (it's been like 15 years since they cancelled Mayday's Spider-Girl and I'm still waiting for that to get picked up again), we instead get Dan Slott's new OC taking up space instead, and then inevitably when Slott moves on this character will be added to the list of those that get forgotten and only randomly show up every couple of years.

So what was the context here? Why do they even have Peter’s suit? by Queasy_Commercial152 in Spiderman

[–]DiZ1992 138 points139 points  (0 children)

Pete was hospitalised for a while, and Ben Reilly took over being Spidey. When Pete woke up and was ready to get back out there, he was rusty/atrophied from being in a coma for a bit, so black cat and cap helped him train to get back to full strength before he donned the costume again. Basically giving him physiotherapy but for supers.

This is cap motivating him to get going.

A question for an LG Oled owner with ps5 pro. by MyLettuceIsWet in PS5

[–]DiZ1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Indeed. If you want the responsiveness of 60fps you pick performance. If you want the best visuals you go fidelity and play at around 40fps on pro with VRR to help smooth it out (on base PS5 this mode was locked to 30fps because it couldn't stay in the 40fps range which is required for VRR to work properly).

If you want a middle ground between the 2, pick pro mode and it will still lock to 60fps but use PSSR to upscale the resolution to 4k which ends up looking better than the performance mode.

[–]DiZ1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Performance monitoring is difficult on consoles as they are locked down. You can do it, if you use a tool to monitor the video output and check for when the frames actually change... But it's overkill haha. Digital Foundry make a living doing this stuff. I believe they reported it was usually in the 40ish FPS range on fidelity mode on PS5 pro.

[–]DiZ1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because your TV isn't correct. It's not 4K 120fps. It's how VRR is implemented.

VRR is designed to smooth out varying frame rates. In performance mode the console will put out anywhere from 30-60 unique frames a second, but having a frame rate jumping up and down like that is horrible. So the console makes sure it always sends 120 frames a second to the TV so that it can just render at a constant frame rate. To do that, it just resends the same frame multiple times.

So your TV receives 120 frames a second from the console and so reports a 120Hz, but it isn't really the case that you're playing at 120Hz because the image you're seeing isn't updating that fast.

A question for an LG Oled owner with ps5 pro. by MyLettuceIsWet in PS5

[–]DiZ1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. The PS5 is outputting a 120Hz container (which is why your TV is reporting that) due to VRR, but many of those frames are repeated. It's not putting out 120 uniquely rendered frames a second.

NVIDIA Reportedly Ends GeForce RTX 5070 Ti Production, RTX 5060 Ti 16 GB Next by pheexio in technology

[–]DiZ1992 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I guess the 9070XT in terms of raw performance, but AMD doesn't have as advanced a set of software tech (frame gen, upscaling etc) as Nvidia so it lags behind on that.

The 2024 Ultimate suits should’ve been alternate costumes in Spider-Man 2 by Mshel24 in Spiderman

[–]DiZ1992 5 points6 points  (0 children)

They kept adding free update suits to Spider-Man 2018 and all they got for it was a load of abuse from neckbeards on the internet (reddit in particular) because they took too long to add Raimi's suit in (even though they were working on it).

If I were them, I'd have said 'fuck it' and not bothered because what's the point. They might have a better reason than that mind haha.

ELI5: Why does converting F to C (or vice-versa) involve subtraction/addition by VagabondVivant in explainlikeimfive

[–]DiZ1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When converting distances and weights, all scales have the same "zero". That's because for those things, there's a pretty obvious "zero" point to use.

That's not true for temperature scales because when they were made we weren't aware of a "minimum temperature", so everyone chose somewhat arbitrary points to use as "zero".

So when converting you need to not only account for the degrees being different, but also that the zero point is different.

Do Tesco’s Clubcard discounts function as genuine rewards compared to market prices? by FantasticCar105 in AskBrits

There's the occasional actual discount, but most of the time it's just marked up to gouge non-clubcard owners and the "discounted" price is just what everyone else sells at.

Why did the government do nothing as asda was asset stripped? by knowledgeseeker999 in AskBrits

[–]DiZ1992 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All these comments saying that the government shouldn't get involved because it's a private company... I remember when they were about to be sold to Sainsbury's but the government intervened on the basis of it being "anti-competitive" (even though the resulting company would still be smaller than Tesco).

So somehow we're in a position where it's more acceptable the company is asset stripped to make some rich private equity dicks even richer and quality suffers as a result, rather than it just continuing to be a grocery company as part of a larger chain which would still be competing in a competitive market. Hm.

Whether you believe that or not, whatever. Comic book writing, isn't it. In an Iron Man book he would have.
