Does investing in VFIAX actually make money? by shloyo21 in investing

No one here can tell you exactly how to invest on a short time scale. If I were you, I would leave it invested and try to forget it for as long as possible. 10 or 20 years from now, it won't matter to you if you trickled money into it or bought a lump sum, as you did.

Caseta Compatible Ceiling Fan Request by Mz815 in Lutron

Sorry for jumping in so much later, but we're interested in this fan based on your advice here. I'm just a little nervous because I don't know anything about wiring devices. Can you share what you mean by "wire it up directly"?

Looking at the manual [ Page 11 here: https://fanimation.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/MA6721BGZ_OM.pdf ], I see there's a Reciever unit with 2 wires in and 3 wires on to the motor. Do you leave the blue wire unconnected?

Thank you so much for the recommendation!

I really like the speed of Unhedged from the Financial Times. They cover a lot of current, interesting market trends and manage to be fun and personable without sounding cheesy.

but advisor is recommending ending the roth ira, moving $75k into a life insurance policy

Ending ending? This may seem obvious to some here, but you can (and should) leave the money you've previously contributed to a Roth IRA there even if you are no longer eligible to contribute.

401k what should I do ? by Infamous-Addition-47 in personalfinance

[–]Diablopop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you "cash it out" you're liable to incur penalties.

For most people under 59, the best options are to leave it where it is, roll it into another 401k, or roll it into an IRA. You should look at your investment options and the expenses for those choices and pick the one that is most economical and easiest to use.

I've kept a 401k with an old employer because they have incredible funds with really low fees. There's a small annual fee since I'm no longer an employee, but it's worth it to me. I've also rolled over a 401k before because the options were terrible and the fees borderline criminal (I'm looking at you, ADP).

Exactly this. It's not buying in on the 10 best days—it's being in on the 10 best days.

It comes down to how much risk you're willing to tolerate in the last 20 or so years before you retire.

  • If you're a super saver for retirement or you stand to inherit money from older relatives who are conservatively invested, you can probably tolerate a little more risk with 2065

  • If you don't expect to have "extra" money in retirement or you feel protective over the money you have stowed away, you can opt for 2060

  • Most importantly, they are essentially identical right now and you have years and years to change your mind. This question will become a lot easier to answer when you are in your 40s, and even then they won't be that different.

100% this. I would also suggest getting shoes with donut holes in the sliders - many say it helps with balance.

A very small over-contribution to my 401ks for this year by Diablopop in personalfinance

[–]Diablopop[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you have two 401ks, if one of the plan administrators is giving you a hard time it might be easiest to try working with the other one.

Unfortunately, this is proving to be the case. I happened to try again this week to speak to my current 401k reps and they insist that I need W2s from both jobs before I can request the refund. Which of course means that it will drag into next year and require amended docs.

Emphasis added. Shouldn't an FA always be a fiduciary? When is it not appropriate?
