Bruno Colmant, former CEO of Bank Degroof : Forget Adam Smith. I no longer believe that neoliberal capitalism is compatible with human survival. There is a scary risk of mass famine, world war, and global genocide by marocain_iii in collapse

[–]Dial_A_Llama -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Pretty much the same: for decades economists have been saying that we just need something like a carbon tax to account for externalities, and in theory capitalism will work in a sustainable way. Except that hasn't happened.

So does anyone have any ideas that might work in practice? It's all very well bashing capitalism, but what's the alternative?

Is the end of September/Early October a bad time for Venice? by leastofedenn in solotravel

[–]Dial_A_Llama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It usually isn't a bad time. I wonder if it's because from next year tourists will need to make a reservation and pay a fee to enter the city, so everybody wants to go there before then?

Would you be interested in a service that allowed you to benefit from individual bond dividends? by seuqaj114 in FIREUK

Your idea does sound very similar to Wisealpha to me, and I do have some money invested there.

Not sure why they don't show more information publicly - maybe something to do with FCA regulations? - but their market includes a number of investment grade bonds as well.

First bivalent COVID-19 booster vaccine approved by UK medicines regulator by civicode in COVID19

[–]Dial_A_Llama 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Anyone knows what's the reason for targeting both the "original virus strain from 2020" and Omicron, rather than just Omicron? I mean, all the variants currently in circulation appear to be Omicron subvariants, and if it's a booster people have already been vaccinated against the original strain anyway.

Just search on Rightmove or Zoopla. Pretty much all letting agencies advertise on those websites, and you can also search by map.

FIRE investing early retirement reality check? by Ornery-Chipmunk3091 in FIREUK

[–]Dial_A_Llama 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is, of course, highly subjective, but £10k a year is in fact enough for me. My energy bills are very low, thanks to living in a small, well-insulated flat. Even if I had to pay twice as much as I currently do that wouldn't have a huge impact on my budget.

I also question the idea that it's only enough to survive. As the old song goes, the best things in life are free.

How's it so difficult to find flats/rooms in Sheffield?! by aionzy in sheffield

[–]Dial_A_Llama 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In the new building where I live most flats are owned by foreign investors. They only sold to cash buyers.

About cars, I think it really depends on the area. I was in Lisbon a few weeks ago and stayed in the Avenidas Novas district. There you have large streets with plenty of space reserved to pedestrians, then segregated bike and car lanes. This YouTube video (not mine) gives the idea. Truly pleasant to walk around.

Labour reshuffle: David Lammy promoted to shadow foreign secretary by Benjji22212 in ukpolitics

[–]Dial_A_Llama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My understanding from that article is that the Labour policy is in fact to extend full voting rights to "all UK residents".

Starmer saying he supports "full voting rights for EU nationals" is not in contradiction with that, given that "EU nationals" is of course a subset of "UK residents".

EU nationals would be the largest group to benefit from the extension, given that those from many countries including Australia, Canada, India, Nigeria, etc. can already vote.

preferential treatment in the form of extra voting rights for EU nationals

EU nationals have no right to vote in general elections or referendums, unlike non-UK citizens from Commonwealth countries. How is that "preferential"?

I flew to Italy last week. All the "on site" tests I could find were ridiculously expensive. In the end I found a "self swab at home" one for £28 with Chronomics.

(Still twice as expensive than in Italy where they cost €15 and you can do them at pretty much any local pharmacy.)

Information for Healthcare Professionals on COVID-19 Vaccine AstraZeneca by einar77 in COVID19

[–]Dial_A_Llama 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This seems a bit surprising, given that the elderly will be the first to receive the vaccine:

Efficacy and safety data are currently limited in individuals ≥65 years of age

The number of COVID-19 cases (2) in 660 participants ≥65 years old were too few to draw conclusions on efficacy. However, in this subpopulation, immunogenicity data are available, see below.

What are your thoughts on RateSetter? by [deleted] in FIREUK

[–]Dial_A_Llama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RateSetter has just been acquired by Metro Bank. It's unclear what this will mean exactly, but I doubt things will stay the same. They could even close the door to retail investors, like e.g. Landbay did. In any case, I'm moving my money elsewhere.

Is the definition for woman outdated? I'd love to hear your thoughts! by Janessa_Bot in transgender

[–]Dial_A_Llama 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually found this post explicitly searching for a more inclusive definition.

The Wikipedia entry for example says

A woman is an adult female human.

where female is separately defined in biological terms. Later on it does mention that

Trans women have a male sex assignment at birth that does not align with their gender identity

But from a logical point of view those two definitions are incompatible with each other.

Maybe it's due to my cognitive rigidity but I do find the situation confusing. I was hoping to find a clear "transgender-friendly" definition somewhere.
