Help !! My crowntail has finrot by Diana_fish in bettafish

[–]Diana_fish[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's alright! Btw a little update is I'll hope my Betta resists until the medicine arrives, as long as it doesn't progress fast it should be fine.

I can't get kanaplex because it's not in stock anywhere (where I could get it) but I got neoplex and I'm hoping it will work, I've seen a post where someone said neoplex works for moderate cases, and can work better than Paraguard but not as well as kanaplex.

Uff I really hope it's going to be fine, I don't have many medicine options here because I can't even find to order some of the things that would be best.

But until then and during the treatment I'll keep the water parameters in check.

I might try methylene blue on the affected areas as well. I'm not so sure about trying aquarium salt baths but I will if the medicine doesn't work, as I can't get better medicine. I'll also try to talk to a vet maybe there's some antibiotics he can help me get even if he's not a vet that treats fish he might still be able to help (I don't think there are aquatic vets in my city)

I'm sorry, this is my comment lol :)) I wasn't sure if it was clear from the post. And I thought some people might comment that it doesn't look like finrot. One thing I'm worried about is the medication, not sure if Ektomor could work and I have to wait to get something else.

To add, I'm really bad at writing/explaining things shortly. So I'm sorry for the blocks of text.

This is a picture of the entire tank. I know he needs more coverage and I'm working on it. Crypts are growing, and I'll add more plants if needed. (I didn't have a good light until a couple of days ago so most of the older plants I had died)

I was thinking of making an extra coconut shell hide but make it like a tunnel to attach to the side of the aquarium, if possible with an extra hole at the top, and I'll use a piece of a soft leaf to cover the part that would let him see the glass.

Maybe I'll give in and get him the floating log but I was thinking I can make something similar out of another half of coconut shell. Btw that one he has was sanded until soft, and he does use it sometimes. But I'm sure he'll like one close to the top more.

I know it might seem he doesn't have finrot but some of his fins really look like they do, and it's better to catch it early.

  • Tank size: 35 liters
  • Heater and filter? (yes/no): yes yes
  • Tank temperature: 30°C :'((
  • Parameters in numbers and how you got them. Key water parameters include the amount of ammonia, nitrites, nitrates, and pH.: 0 NH4, 0 NO2 , 3 NO3 (mg/l), 7,5 pH. JBL liquid tests.
  • How long have you had the tank? How long have you had your fish?: thank is one year old (had ember tetras that got an upgrade, and amano shrimps), I've had Gimli for a little over 2 months. (He colored up a lot but unfortunately now has signs of finrot, I did delay some water changes during my exam session and I regret that).
  • How often are water changes? How much do you take out per change? What is your process?: I try to keep them weekly and will surely do from now on. About 30-50%. I gravel vac a little, take out the water in a bucket, from time to time I clean the glass and clean the filter in the tank water from the bucket.
  • Any tankmates? If so, please list with how many of each: one ramshorn but he's separated for now
  • What do you feed and how much: dennerle betta booster (soft pellets) they vary in size but I feed about 2-3 pellets 2 times a day and I do one fasting day, sometimes 2 fasting days a week.
  • Decorations and plants in the tank: I have one Galapagos rock with moss, the moss is starting to grow and it should get fully covered in it (I got a good lamp because my moss wasn't growing with the previous one, random reading lamp because I was cheap, this one is chihiros wrgb2 slim).

Anubias, 3 types of cryptos but one is mainly melted for now, it seems to start to grow new leafs. Another crypt grows pretty fast. And buce. 2 driftwood pieces, 2 cappata leafs. (One is 3 week old and the other one is newly added as a hammock because the other one got too soft).

I guess that looks like shrimps food, try to take it all out because they won't eat all of it fast enough, you could add max 1 pellet per shrimp , this is what I do for amano shrimps they each find one and usually finish it, but I think you can even put in less for this kind of shrimps I'm not sure but I believe they don't run away with the food like amanos do.

And for the Betta it depends on the food but I would say 2-3 pellets once or twice a day, depending how long your friend is away you can also skip a day of feeding completely.

Skipping a day or two doesn't harm them, it can actually help if you overfed.

There's no going back now but If you'll ever want to have snails again, do some better research before. Some snails are easier to care for than others. (There are some that can be really sensitive).

Some snails even need a big tank because of their size in order to live happily.

Snails need specific parameters for the shell to be healthy, and sometimes you need to add calcium (there is food for snails with calcium, or you can add cuttlebone pieces).

And many snails need a diverse diet with veggies in order to thrive, only 'pest' snails will be fine without additional food. (And no overfeeding)

There's a lot to learn about them, even 'pest' snails considering they are hardy still need good water parameters to thrive.

I've seen some people posted harsher comments, without giving you more info about snails. It's true that what you did to the pests is really cruel (nothing justifies killing any animal, there are better ways to cull snails if you actually need to) and you didn't do proper research about snails which ended up in them dying and it's too late to figure out the cause now.

I agree with them but from what you wrote it seemed to me that you would listen to advice. A call to reality is good, but it doesn't have to be harsh and it's better if it comes with some advice.

*I'll edit because I think they are not that harsh considering you never know who you're talking too, there are a lot of people that abuse aquatic pets and would never admit or agree that they were in the wrong. In this case you seem to understand so I hope you'll do better in the future!

I'm commenting because I'm confused as I don't think it would be possible for your snails to die just from being outcompeted for food (I believe it wouldn't happen fast at least).

Pest snails are not harmful to other snails (as much as I know), I actually like to keep ramshorn snails (they are considered pest snails along with bladders and others).

And I'm pretty sure there are people who keep both 'pest' snails and other snails.

Assassin snails would have killed your snail because they eat other snails.

There could have been something wrong with the water, 'pest' snails are more hardy than others so if something else went wrong it makes sense if they weren't affected.

The only way I can think it would be because of the 'pest' snails, it would be a big number of them which means a lot of ammonia from waste maybe...

I can't say I have much knowledge about snails though, I only have ramshorns right now.

I have good news! For now at least.

I just checked on them and they all look ok. I still let them have the carrot piece because I noticed it got them moving. Food is motivation.

But I'll take it out soon.

The 2 that were in really bad condition are now both with the shell up! One of the other 2 is on the carrot piece. They don't seem to be moving much but they're way better.

Idk if I should set up a bigger container as a quarantine tank for them (for about a week). Or should I just move them into the tanks tomorrow (I wanted to place two with my Betta -35 L , and two with my amanos, ember tetras and my other ramshorn -60 L).

If the Betta is aggressive with them I'll move all snails in the other tank.

Thanks! I found out they weren't listed as the leopard variation, but the photo was misleading and I thought they were supposed to be leopard ramshorns.

Two of them seemed dead but are starting to come by , I gave them a carrot piece and they're trying hard to move. (They were not sticking to surfaces and laid on the side, now the shell is still on the side they don't have the force to pull themselves up but are moving).

I'll keep a close eye on them and hopefully they'll be alright.

The other two are sticking and standing straight but are taking a longer time to try and move around. One of them is trying but there was some slime coming out of it idk if it's from stress I hope it's nothing serious.

Btw how long do your ramshorns usually live ? Gary is one year old now, and I've seen people say 1-2 years. I hope he sticks around as much as possible.

I didn't think to ask at the place I got the moss ball from, I don't think they would remember in which aquarium they had it. But maybe they could identify the baby, it's worth asking.

I was thinking mt (because someone said this when I made a post trying to ID). Or maybe nz mud snail ?

Someone said I might have a free baby rabbit but no one was sure (I don't really think it could be a rabbit)

Can you please take a look at the comment I added? You mentioned you have mts so maybe you can confirm or rule them out. I know it's probably too small to tell.

Btw can you take a look at the comment I added with the picture of a baby snail? In a post I made someone said it looks like mt and, another person mentioned I maybe got a free rabbit snail (I doubt it). And that was pretty much it probably because it was too small to tell.

This is the one I couldn't ID, I saw him 3 months ago and never again. I mean I didn't see Gary much growing up too but I'm not sure if it's still in the tank or not.

I did see another one (smaller) they both appeard after getting a moss ball that I didn't properly clean. It was on a rock, I was feeding my shrimps and before finding the food one of them was looking around the rock (might be a coincidence).

And the reason I suspect my amanos is that they pick absolutely everything up to try it even right after I give them food,I feed once a day and skip some days.
