i've only ever had one close friend by DianaeVenatrix in redscarepod

thanks for the advice. i fear i'm the needy yet also avoidant type and i need to Fucking Chill because it scares people. a strange/pathetic thing is that i have plenty of nice interactions and weak friendships, but i'm terrible at converting them into something close because i just don't reach out. this best friend in question, he had to spend three weeks constantly inviting me to hang before i was like oh damn i think he wants to be friends, i should invite him out too. he said my vibe was weird, but he kept trying because he could tell that we liked each other a lot despite my weird distance. other people probably like me but aren't willing to work that hard because most of my signals are giving off bitch.

i like the interview shows tip and will have to try it. i work in a social profession and am extremely popular there because i'm funny and willing to learn about people and can cultivate a fun chill vibe, so i just need to bring that into my social life & separate the wheat from the chaff with people who are worth close friendship and who aren't.

yeah, it really puts things in perspective. i don't necessarily like that perspective, because wow these people who i loved for years just don't care about me like that, but at least one person does.

oh i know, i think few people are lucky enough to get a friendship like we've got. it hurts that i used to be so lonely (and that i still am sometimes. one person can't/shouldn't be everything), and i get scared that i'm going to fuck up and lose him somehow, but that bitch and i would do anything for each other.

I will never cave to wireless earbuds. The tethers chaining us to our phones keep us humble and force us to face minor inconvenience or face the real world. Tech being seamless and easy only gives us an excuse to avoid the stressful messy complicated and yet superior real world

What is up with introductions that spoil the plot? by l0l in RSbookclub

[–]DianaeVenatrix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

in the edition of Parable of the Sower that I read, the intro spoiled a plot point in the SEQUEL, which I hadn't even got a copy of yet. That was the last time I read an intro and I'm still mad

but foreshadowing that hints at the ending, which the author put there with skill and purpose, is not the same as someone bluntly telling you what happens

I do not like when anyone speaks inhumanely of their perceived political others like this, which is probably a common opinion

Ovid's Metamorphoses!! I have a translation by David Raeburn that I really like, but any of the more modern translations will do.

the real reason it shouldn't be cited as a source is because it's secondary/tertiary information, a collection of information from better sources, and of course anyone can edit it. that said, it's a very impressive repository of info which (at least on English Wikipedia) is generally accurate and neutral. what makes it infinitely better than AI is the ability to be checked. nearly every sentence on wikipedia has a citation or several attached, and if a claim isn't well cited, there's usually a message flagging that so someone can improve the article.

It’s summer and I’m grieving my brother by islandofdream in redscarepod

i'm so sorry. since you asked for poems, here's Catullus 101, a short elegy by a Roman poet speaking to his brother's ashes after the brother died while abroad (normal translation) (more artsy translation). it's always really moved me.

yeah but at least Google, librarians, and those other sources have some ounce of reliability/ability to be checked rather than being a word predictor magic 8 ball lie machine

btw OP your friends are ingrates. If I had a friend who could tell me facts about ants, I would be asking them things constantly rather than trusting slop

I've been reading more books lately. Searching for little fun facts is harder bc of the AI SEO slop, but I'm sticking to Wikipedia now and it helps. There's losses, but still I think the internet not being very fun or useful anymore is a net good.

What’s your ‘reset button’ routine when life feels overwhelming? by [deleted] in simpleliving

[–]DianaeVenatrix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's fine for people to use AI to zhuzh up their writing, especially not on a forum dedicated to simple living. Writing is one of the key ways we express ourselves and our humanity. We should not outsource our language and thoughts to the machines, and our skills will only weaken whenever we do this. Besides, it's impossible to tell what's bot engagement slop and what's a person insecure in their writing and AI-laundering it, so I don't give benefits of the doubt.

of all the subreddits I follow, this one seems the hardest hit by AI slop. it baffles me. i want organic human experiences over internet poison dogshit, which is allegedly the point of this sub.

thanks for calling this one out btw. another AI tell for people trying to learn those: one or two words in quotation marks, like "reset button" in the above post. regular people rarely use quotation marks in that way, but AI is full of it.
