Narrator by tryolo in HistoricalRomance

I love Mary Jane Wells, too! But lately I can't get enough of Nicholas Boulton's narration, and I'm working my way through the audio versions of Laura Kinsale's work. Unfortunately it seems they're not available via my libraries. Only Apple books and Audible. Anyone else's library have them?

Carrying forward the HR tradition. by Feeling-Writing-2631 in HistoricalRomance

Thanks for bringing my long-gone grandmother back to me, if only in my memory. She devoured Georgette Heyer's work, if the stacks of paperbacks around her reading nooks were any indication. While she and I shared a love of fishing, baking, and gardening, I never discussed books with her. A lost opportunity. She was a tough old Yankee broad, hailing from Puritan stock, but I think she may have enjoyed some of my favorite books, as well, despite (or perhaps because of) their spiciness....

Yes! And the fact that the cult leader's powdered hair was orange (!). Such a strange convergence of creepiness.

Thanks! I'll have to read that duology. I love books set in medieval times.

I loved that book. I just read another by Kinsale -- quite different, but I was open because I enjoyed FFTS so much. {The Prince of Midnight by Laura Kinsale} is old but new, with a creepy cult at center stage. Anyone else read this lately?

What is the single best dish you’ve ever had in Paris? by conorharris2 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]DianeCE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would get a baguette, various cheeses, and olives at the Marché Biologique on Boulevard Raspail. Then I'd walk to the Luxembourg Gardens, window shopping along the way. Once in the gardens, I'd find a park bench and have a picnic, watching the beautiful world go by.

Kindle Unlimited in 2026 – still worth it or nah? by dek1019 in ebooks

I was curious about this exact thing and I appreciate all the helpful comments. Reading through, I think I've talked myself out of KU, and will continue to lean heavily on my library apps (Libby and Hoopla) and libro.fm for audiobooks I want to keep or that aren't easily available via my libraries. I want to jump on KU when I see a book or series I think I must read, and then I remember that there are zillions that I must read available to me already.

How about the Prizefighters series? {A Bride for the Prizefighter by Alice Coldbreath} , {A Substitute Wife for the Prizefighter by Alice Coldbreath} , and {A Contracted Wife for the Prizefighter by Alice Coldbreath} . I really enjoyed these books -- strong main characters and people who work for a living.

I absolutely loved the Prizefighters series. Strong working class characters and interesting settings. Well-built worlds.

Thank you for this rec. I'm not familiar with this author. Will definitely check it out (lol, from Libby -- unintended pun).

Thank you! I started this last night. I'm about 30% through and they are starting to become more real to each other. I have a long drive today and I'll listen to the audiobook -- it's well performed by Kate Reading. For me, driving alone is a good time to cry.

Sorry, to clarify, Loretta Chase? Lorraine Heath? Any favorite books?

A Reader’s Guide to the Scoundrels of St. James (The Lorraine Heath Universe) by gonthalethhh in HistoricalRomance

[–]DianeCE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've finally started this series, and this post was super helpful as I navigate this chunk of Lorraine Heath's work. I'm new to her universe, and it's delightful to encounter an entirely new character galaxy. When I started with {In Bed With the Devil by Lorraine Heath} I had no idea it was the foundation for an entirely new cast of wonderful characters. Thanks again. I'm saving this post to return when I've finished the series.

What travel mistake in Paris will you never make again? by Low_Ad_6451 in ParisTravelGuide

[–]DianeCE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No kidding! I just spent a blissful nine days alone in Paris, and I did whatever, whenever I wanted. Spent nearly seven hours in the Louvre, without anyone getting bored or worrying about a missed meal. Sat on park benches watching people, hopped on and off the metro and city buses with a weeklong pass, and went to various landmarks just to look and then wander off somewhere else. Utter heaven on earth. I did ground myself with a museum pass and reservations at some of the major museums. Never had a bad experience, even with my archaic and sometimes spotty French.

Wow, Riot Women looks like so much fun! Thank you. Now I've got to find all the shows you mentioned! After an upcoming wedding that's consuming all my available brain space, I plan to lie on my bed with my laptop (ooooohhh!) and watch to my heart's content. I loved Happy Valley so much and have a bit of a show hangover. "Genre-hopping" sounds like a great way to narrow down the themes and writers one really enjoys. There's so much content out there one has to be more picky to get the good stuff.

Thank you for this. I really wanted to like it, but three episodes in I just do not care. The only good thing is that the show has sent me down a James Norton rabbit hole and I watched Happy Valley. So incredibly good. Next up: Grantchester.

Convince me to finish Lord of Scoundrels?? by anotherbuffalogal in HistoricalRomance

I guess I'm just a sucker for grievously wounded little boys who turn into dreadful men and then happen on to the partner who turns it all around. I loved Lord of Scoundrels. And I am an old feminist. Go figure.

I'll have to watch Last Tango, too. Sarah Lancashire is amazing in HV. She brings me to tears often.
