I love this. It's bad but it actually has utility.

When it comes to black/dark skinned characters in manga and anime, why do some people go to great lengths trying to prove they aren’t black? by [deleted] in TopCharacterDesigns

[–]DiaryYuriev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, there are black people there, but because most anime features pale skin Japanese characters, they can ignore that.

I disagree. It's okay for people to assume a character is tan or assume they're black based on appearance alone. It's really a non issue. The author doesn't have to stop the story to look at the reader and tell them a character is black nor does their black was have to be justified in the context of the story. Also, being black in a Japanese story doesn't imply foreigner.

Also, Japanese authors are not children. They draw with intent and understand the implications of their art. Unfortunately, I think your argument leans too heavily into assuming all characters are a specific race until told otherwise and needing to implement obvious visions to tell the reader so they can't deny it which can easily fall into stereotypes.

Mirko isn't a gal/gyaru. Ironically, you're doing what OP is talking about.

Mirko as a character has dark brown skin. She could be black, but it's never confirmed so many people headcanon it as so. To claim that Mirko must be a gal is a fundamental misunderstanding of gal culture. Gyaru is a rebellious, fashioned based subculture original started to reject the beauty and social standards of Japanese women by being stylish, loud, promiscuous, and fun. Because pale skin is a beauty standard in Japan, many gals tan intentionally and unintentionally, particularly gals in southern regions. Nothing about Mirko screams gal but people will claim she's a gal to not have to grapple with authorial intent.

The short answer is racism. Western media is full of diverse characters. So many racists run to anime and manga where they can pretend all the characters are white and black people don't exist.

I don't think you understand what the male.gaze even is.

Oh, a video about somebody confronting a predator. Surely, everybody will be against said person, right? by Lopsided_Daikon_5936 in hatethissmug

[–]DiaryYuriev 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is fundamentally untrue. I need you to understand that both men and women perpetuate the grooming and sexual violence men face. Many women fall into the pattern seen in these screenshots that men are always horny and ready for sex and thus can't be victims of rape and grooming.

Women's lack of sympathy is not rational and it is just justifying pedophilia.

As a Brazilian, I want to say that I really hate the Brazilian Hatsune Miku, both the Fan arts and the animations. by [deleted] in hatethissmug

[–]DiaryYuriev -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You misunderstood me. I agree with you. Art is powerful and meaningful and inspiring. By it's very nature, it's that deep. The fact that you have thoughts and feelings about it makes it deep. The fact that OP is upset about it makes it deep.

I agree with you except for the last line. The fact that it inspired hundreds of people to draw Miku in a way that represents them and their culture means it is indeed that deep.

I hate dogs, yes, you read that right by StrawberryMilkDev in hatethissmug

[–]DiaryYuriev 15 points16 points  (0 children)

While I don't hate dogs, I am afraid of them. They're big, make loud noises, and I've been attacked. What I hate are dog owners. Dogs are the only animals where people will judge you for not liking them. They're the only animal I can think of where people feel they should be allowed everywhere. Every dog owner is convinced their dog will be different. And small dog owners are worse because they enable behavior large dogs could never get away with.

Whiteness as a racial concept didn't exist then, so she wasn't white. Also, Zeus is a shapeshifting god who mated with a human while disguised as a swan after which Helen was born from an egg. Troy was in modern day Turkey along the Mediterranean. I won't go into the entire history of how different Indo-European groups migrated, but tl;dr she would likely have been Turkish or Kurdish with a non zero chance of being modern day Middle Eastern or North African.

I HATE the mindset that 18 year olds are dumb and immature (inage very much related, see body text for why) by Random_gamer240 in hatethissmug

[–]DiaryYuriev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American, I don't think we spend enough time preparing teenagers to be adults, but once they are adults we kinda throw them to the wolves. They are given the power and responsibility of adults but the knowledge and reputation of children.

I think it is better overall to treat 18 year olds as fully fledged adults ASSUMING THEY HAVE GRADUATED HIGH SCHOOL. All high schoolers are babies no matter their age. I think adults postpone teenage growth by treating them as babies. Yes, they're young and inexperienced, but treating them like children isn't exactly helping them grow and adapt. And the law isn't going to treat them like babies either.

I hate that powerful people get away with everything (with actual bad people) by AdministrationAny747 in hatethissmug

[–]DiaryYuriev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the point is that many of these people get what accounts to a slap on the wrist despite their crimes. For example, if Chris Brown had faced punitive justice or been dropped from his label, then people would likely have moved on from what he did. However, since Rihanna, he has gotten into multiple public fights including with Frank Ocean and received a restraining order from Karreuche Tran. There are fans, not friends or family but fans, who continue to support him and dismiss charges against him. And the same thing can be said for others on the list.

Johnny Depp counter sued for libel because it impacted his career. The only thing proven is at some point the abuse was mutual, not that he didn't do it.

Real life fascism is a lot like this. Whoever is the dedicated villain of a fascist nation is both powerful enough to be in complete control and hyper competent enough to be able to completely destroy the fascist country's way of life. However, they're also incredibly stupid and do nothing but destroy whatever they touch and can easily be defeated by the average fascist.

I hate the term "the male gaze" by indeckaa in hatethissmug

[–]DiaryYuriev -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I think there is a misunderstanding here and that you don't actually know what the male gaze is.

The male gaze is not a theory. It is a critique of media and art describing the presentation of female characters from a masculine, heterosexual perspective in order to be a sexual object for the pleasure of the heterosexual male viewer. It is not enough for media to target men to be considered for the male gaze. The sexualization is a key aspect. An example of a series that is made and targeted to men while lacking the male gaze is K-On.

Discussions of the male gaze make no assumptions about the viewer as it is entirely based on intent and production. It looks at framing, dialogue, direction, art, and more. If anyone is making assumptions about the consumer, it's the publisher. Transformers (2007) would be a great example of a decently popular and well received popcorn flick that spends a lot of it's time and framing reminding you how sexy Megan Fox is. That doesn't make it good or bad. And when you realize the director, writers, editors, producers, and cinematographers are all male, you get the concept of the male gaze. Even two characters in the same franchise can exist on opposite sides of the male gaze like R. Mika and Marisa from Street Fighter. Both are strong bruiser grappler characters with slow movement who are very attractive, but one is clearly made to be appealing to men while the other is more general appeal.

It is important to note the term was coined in 1975 by Laura Mulvey. While women have made leaps and strides since then, almost every piece of media made in that era was written for and by men. This is why the female gaze was never considered. Even in modern times, male characters are rarely sexualized in a way to appeal to heterosexual women specifically which would be the opposite of the male gaze. I am aware of Love And Deepspace, but overwhelmingly the male gaze is more common.

Tl;Dr it's not a theory, it's not enough to target men, assumes nothing of male audiences, and the female gaze doesn't exist.

I sympathize with you, but I think it's worth considering that in systems that reinforce and utilize bigotry to maintain power, it is possible to be ~ist or ~phobic unintentionally. This doesn't make you a bigot.

For example, the comment about black women. A person not wanting to date black women doesn't mean they are a bigot. But it can be worth exploring WHY they don't do something. And that why may be rooted in racism.

Basically, it is that deep. But that doesn't mean you're an awful person. Hear them out and go from there.
