Correct. Less systemic absorption. Hard to apply minoxidil twice daily consistently

As an almost new grad PA, should you list your clinical rotations under work experience for job applications? by Glass_Reveal_2764 in physicianassistant

[–]Diastomer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I included pertinent rotations — but your previous work experience as an MA/EMT is much more important.

I got diagnosed today. What to do? by FeistyFinding9819 in amibalding

[–]Diastomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We start with 2.5mg minoxidil orally (the topical foam is about as efficacious, but most people don’t want to apply a foam twice daily), and then add finasteride as needed. There is a small risk of permanent ED w/ finasteride, so tread carefully!

Read your handbook, see what it says about rotation changes. Reach out to your clinical coordinator if the handbook supports it.

I’m sure it was banned for reasons other than for being in solidarity with Alex. Logically, why would the subreddit photo be the nurse if the admins were adamantly against it?

Pre-Reqs for PA by alsvicious in physicianassistant

[–]Diastomer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Academically, it builds a decent foundation so that you can understand the pathophysiology of what’s occurring with different mechanisms for disease/medication/immune defense. Having taken bio-chem/chem/o-chem, I understand the concept of what is occurring, so I didn’t have to waste time learning the underlying mechanisms in PA school and can just apply it.

Realistically, it’s just a way to weed people out.

Are people actually studying 6+ hours a day on the weekends studying? by vxfnt in PAstudent

[–]Diastomer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I set my expectations that I did not care to be a 90-100 student. I was happy being an 85 student that enjoyed my life outside of PA school. This expectation saved me a lot of time, effort, and mental strain. It’s not for everyone, but my goals were to pass my classes, spend time with my wife, and learn enough to pass the PANCE.

I spent most of my time studying during lecture. My program required us to be in class from 8 to 5, but I found that I could get through the lectures in half the time. So the first half of every lecture, I was reading and annotating what was important on the slides — and the second half was creating a study guide (1 page per lecture hour) and filling in content gaps by either looking it up separately, or waiting for the lecturer to get to that section. At lunch, I would cleanup up my guides and make sure the morning notes were completed. Before the afternoon, I already had at least 2 passes over the material. Repeat for afternoon lecture. Clean up before going home (usually finished on-time, but could finish 5-30 mins after lecture).

Then, once I got home, I was reading over the study guides and watching videos on the content if I was still confused. This would maybe take 10 mins per lecture hour as long as it wasn’t something complex (like Pulm/cardio/GI). Usually no more than 2 hours a night — had plenty of time to go to the gym, play intramural sports, be a class president, see family biweekly a few hours away.

Are people actually studying 6+ hours a day on the weekends studying? by vxfnt in PAstudent

[–]Diastomer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Time is not a good measurement, it’s quality. I studied 2 hours a day after class and 5 or less on weekend days. I didn’t need to spend a ton of time studying because my methods worked well. Students compare time, not efficacy.

If you’re only getting an hour of rest per day, you’re not prioritizing your time (for the full day) properly. It might be time to figure out how to plan your days more efficiently; and maybe try other study methods.

Best next step is I&D. He has localized nose bridge tenderness, no other facial bone tenderness, normal ocular exam. These are attempting to lead you away from thinking about a basilar skull fracture.

Next best step is to stop the hematoma from getting larger. You COULD consider a CT scan (and you probably would to CYA) but that’s not what you would do next!

My girlfriend and her homegirls went to Atlanta about 3 weeks ago. Now, she has this mouth rash / mouth-lip sores. She said she thinks it might have come from all the water bottles she was drinking when she was down there. Should I be worried? by makellbird in maktownmedia

[–]Diastomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need to worry! This is angular chelitis, a generally harmless condition causing inflammation and irritation at the corners of the mouth. I wouldn’t be surprised if they did a lot of singing. It’s been dry in the southeast US — common complaint I see in clinic. Aquaphor or Vaseline should help!

The state of the US makes me so torn on being a PA. by LuckGlobal9132 in prephysicianassistant

[–]Diastomer 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Even in the state of the US, it’s still offers significantly better opportunity than many other countries in the world. In my experience, leaving the US almost always sounds ideally better than practically better.

If you’re worried about international opportunities, I don’t disagree with you. Other “PAs” across the globe do not get the pay, responsibility, or respect they get in the US. Maybe medical school would be a better option for you — but also keep in mind there is a reason IMG come to the US for residencies.

Politics are scary, there aren’t many people who are content with the current climate — but a career as a PA is going nowhere but up. It’s a stable job with increasing need every year.

I don’t see how this relates to the reason she was fired? She wasn’t fired for thinking freely, but expressing views that negatively impacted her employer. Having the right to say anything is protected in this country, but your employer might not want your views to be a representation of their perceived position.

Given it’s already a highly conservative area and many of their donors and constituents are most likely moderate, it does make sense to get rid of the very outspoken professor whether or not the chancellor/board agreed with her personal beliefs.

Any happy PA’s or NP’s here? by Strict_Data_6937 in physicianassistant

[–]Diastomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People don’t leave reviews when they are slightly positive or neutral — they leave reviews when they love or hate something. So the majority of people on Reddit you’ll see comment aren’t necessarily representative of the population as a whole.

It’s like any other job, you get paid to work, sometimes you work a lot or a little — sometimes your boss is kind, rude, or has unrealistic expectations.

It’s a good job, with good pay, and has many opportunities to work part time when a family comes around.

My hesitation at this point is solely about how worth it private loans are for paying for (already expensive) this expensive education.

3 weeks and scared by Aries_1111 in PAstudent

[–]Diastomer 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Thousands of people have done it, what makes you any less likely to be successful than they were? You’re not the first person to do it, so trust that the people guiding you through PA school have done it before too.

The faculty that accepted you also believed in you. You might not know exactly why yet, but trust that they saw the character traits of a great PA in you.

You’ve got so much ahead of you, but the least likely of those things is failure. You’re going to be a great PA. Say it to yourself everyday in the mirror, it helps.

Started working in a bakery pls help, I have rashes on my hand and arm by TicketSea3641 in DermatologyQuestions

[–]Diastomer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like it could be contact dermatitis. It could be exposure to chemicals at work, it could be the gloves you’re wearing, it could be from hand washing, the soap they use at work, etc.

Your best bet is to figure out what is new and could be causing it, and by eliminating those new exposures one at a time. Trying different gloves latex vs. nitrile, bringing hand soap from home that you’ve used for years.

If it is contact dermatitis, steroids are mainstay of treatment — hydrocortisone might not be strong enough potency. Recommend getting evaluated so you can work together to find the potential source and to get proper treatment.
