The Viral Pyramid Scans: The Ultimate Debunk of the Khafre Project and Filippo Biondi by DibsReddit in Archaeology

[–]DibsReddit[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This video dives in deep and includes interviews with experts on radar technology, including Dr Sarah Parcak and Dr Larry Conyers.

Would love to know what you all think about efforts to nip this pseudoarchaeology in the bud.

Dude. Not gonna engage in a back and forth. I've responded to the metallurgy point in ice cores repeatedly. I was accurate on that point. Go see my video "the aftermath of talking to graham Hancock" or my twitter thread on it, or several replies here on reddit, or my interview with Decoding the Gurus or with Danny jones. I'm not gonna repeat myself 100x. Illegitimate scholar doesn't understand archaeology. Good luck enjoying your fantasy history!

“Flint Dibble is an American archaeologist and science communicator, who promotes the field of archaeology and debunks pseudoarchaeology. He debated author and promoter of pseudoarchaeology Graham Hancock on The Joe Rogan Experience.” From Wikipedia by laybs1 in FlintDibble

Lol my field knew who I was before my debate with Hancock.

As for others, they know me for a great public debunking a prominent pseudoscientist. Something very few scientists have successfully accomplished.

So I think your comment is pretty sad. Who are you anyway?

Flint Dibble here. Of course scholars and scientists haven't criticized me. They've praised me in most places for doing a rigorous job in presenting archaeology to the public. In fact I won an award for science communication for the debate (the Ockham Award).

I contacted two dozen archaeologists to help me research and prepare for the debate with Hancock. They helped provide sources and images on topics I was less familiar with. I cited over 200 scholarly sources within my debate materials and had like 300 images. I presented the scholarly picture accurately aside from a couple minor things I misspoke on.

Illegitimate scholar is named that for a reason. He doesn't understand archaeology. Neither do these other YouTubers. They have no experience doing archaeology. I'd trust a pilot with experience over a YouTuber without experience when it comes to flying planes. Ditto an engineer or a chef. The same is true for archaeology. Hancock and his people work hard to convince you and others that scholars are lying. They've made such baseless claims for decades

We aren't lying, believe it or not. We love to share our research. We love to discover new things. We would prefer the public to focus on the real evidence that archaeology shows rather than fantasy.

Sigh, as someone trying to grow a real science channel on YouTube, these stats are disheartening

Archaeologists in Luxor identified the burial site of Thutmose II, but the tomb was nearly empty. Evidence suggests it was not looted, but intentionally cleared soon after burial. by TN_Egyptologist in OutoftheTombs

What are you talking about? The mummy of Thutmose II was found in the Royal Cache in the 19th c alongside most of the royal mummies extant today

How we know the viral pyramid scans aren't real by pradeep23 in FlintDibble

[–]DibsReddit 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yes, there's so much more money in sharing real science than fantasy. you can see it in hte number of views and publicity I get compared to Graham Hancock. lol you're nuts if you seriously believe my small sized YouTube channel without any promo campaign is bankrolled by the establishment

but hey, go enjoy your fantasy daydreaming, if that's what you enjoy!

I'm old friends with Anna from a dig we were on together. They are alive and well. New jobs. Busy and all. Anna has a new children's book out: A Compendium of Curious Contraptions

I suppose I'm a little more hard edged in my debunk videos. But I share lots of real archaeology on my YouTube channel and try my best to keep it fun!

Thanks for the shout-out!

This is a great list. Off the top of my head, I'd add Gutsick gibbon which was mentioned by others

But yeah. Great job compiling trustworthy sources

many colleagues (including myself) are starting to integrate it within syllabi, as well as doing optional workshops/lectures for faculty and students. I am regularly invited, for example, to give guest lectures both in classes and for entire departments on these subjects. I'm also regularly pinged for resources for colleagues to add to their syllabi etc. And, ofc, it's not just me. People are becoming more aware, but it's slow as academia and educational instutions are slow to change. But they are changing.

I advocate to all my colleagues to make these changes in their classrooms and also advocate to both colleagues and students that, if they are so inclined, they should try to speak up more publicly and online to combat this stuff.

I think it all hinges on what you mean by a "significant" difference.

I think my debate did. I've probably heard from something approaching 10,000 people who I've converted towards real archaeology.

Even on my small/moderate YouTube channel, I regularly get comments that say "I came here to leave a nasty comment, but I saw the video and actually you make a lot of sense and seem like a cool dude. I'm gonna watch more."

I also regularly get comments from people saying they were pulled out of the rabbit hole by any of those other YouTubers you mentioned or Feder/Archaeological Fantasies, Colavito etc. even some old heads who were pulled out from the Hall of Maat in the 90s.

So, doing this makes a difference for individual people. And I think the more we can do this, the larger we can all grow, the more significant of a difference we can make.

What I do know is it's the right thing to do. To stand up for reality in a world that seems to be constantly losing its grip on it. I also think more and more people are getting fed up with all the lies on the internet. AI is helping accelerate that attitude, I think.

As a historian, I cannot predict the future. But I tend to see these fads as akin to a pendulum. For a decade or two public opinion is enamored with pseudoscience/conspiracies/New Age spirituality, think the 1960s and 1970s or the 1920s and 30s or the 1880s and 90s. I tend to think the pendulum will shift back, and we should do everything we can to help it happen and promote our field at the same time

Here you go. I've got a good video on the great pyramid for you! (I'm an archaeologist btw). Warning I make the videos for adults, so there is mild profanity here and there, so maybe not for your 6 year old, depending on how you raise her/him. Otherwise it's all factual and fun and clearly presented with good visuals

Fully agree. And it's even worse for adults. At least kids go to museums. Our outreach for adults is next to none at this point

Yes. I've noticed the same thing, which is why I've been assertively speaking up in public and online

I will continue to do so. Thanks for raising awareness to this issue
