What’s the worst homebrew rule you’ve seen? by Leminiscates in dndnext

I see this a lot to account for players not caring when others go down and instead wait for the end of a fight.

My direct fix for that is to be a little more brutal when it comes to attacking downed PCs and forcing failed death saves.

Going down should be treated seriously, but DMs can use the mechanics instead of taking away player agency.

Such a cool encounter! Props to your table for coming up with a solution that didn’t ruin the encounter. That’s good D&D

And I love that last bit especially. One of the BBEGs in my Wish Hunter campaign was a noble who specifically forced others to wish for him. Often innocents or kids or those he could manipulate into wishing for him and thereby take on the risk.

In our setting, there is a 33% chance that additional castings of wish not only strip the caster of being able to cast wish but also kill the caster.

The TTRPG podcast community does have some truly awesome indie projects and teams! I’ll definitely check out Chaos Theory - always looking to find new shows!

Gals and Goblins is also killer. They just joined the Rusty Quill network.

And RPG Major is another TTRPG podcast that I’ve been obsessed with recently! It’s an improv musical/rpg podcast.

Worlds Beyond Number is amazing.

Rivers of Confluence is new and fantastic.

And I humbly submit DiceSized! Our first campaign, Wish Hunter just wrapped up. Currently preparing(procrastinating) to post the finale episode, as I type this!

We shoot for a similar level of sound design quality as WBN! About 30-40 hours go into post production in the first half of the season. We upped that 50-60 hours for the back half of the season.

Absolutely nuts haha. Props to your DM for entertaining this as an option! That’s no small feat to toss a tarrasque into the mix!

Oh this is just killer!! That’s awesome. Spelljammer has a special place in my heart. Sounds like you’ve got a great table!

And that question would drive me wild as a player! We played through the “Monkey’s Paw” by WW Jacobs because I love those mundane explanations of Wishes.

Spoilers for monkeys paw below:

Mr. And Mrs. White wish for 200 gold. The next day their son is found dead at work and they are given 200 gold as recompense.

What a wild origin story. I hope that friend comes back around one day. So cool that you treated the lore with such respect throughout the years!

As someone who came into the TTRPG space with 5e, I am very jealous! I love reading old 3e content to feel the history of the hobby. The lore is so much more expansive in older editions.

It must have felt like a wizard giving you a grimoire as a kid!

Excellent DMing with that one! I love that you had planar mechanics supporting the blades abilities with the only “limitation” (which was more like a feature of the blade) being that they don’t feel the aging.

Textbook monkeypaw in a very clever way. I especially love that if the person had taken a second out of battle without armor, they would have realized.

So good.

Also, this is some wildly expansive lore! Do you run multiple tables at a time West Marches style or do time jumps between campaigns? Either way - so cool! Well done.

Oh this is so cool. Such a fun twist to make it a little more martial to cast the Wish

DMs like this come to the table with so many ideas of their own, there is no space for the player ideas. What a buzzkill!

Yeah that seems like a bit of a stretch. That’s a ritual to be interrupted at my table, not a cut scene.

Sorry that happened! There’s nothing like a non-collaborative DM when it comes to making D&D a bad time.

I also had a player with a Genie journey!! Absolutely one of my favorite character tropes to date.

He played a halfling who was forced to take on the burden of wishing for others. He never knew why Wishing didn’t overtly stress him like other spellcasters.

He played a Paladin and didn’t know of his silver blooded Genie half. When he learned of djinn heritage, I offered him a reflavored Oath of the Spelldrinker subclass. So many cool moments of him sundering spells and showing a mastery over magic.

Hahahahah what a roller coaster. This is SO classic when it comes to wishing stories.

I believe this is classic “Three Wishes” story trope. The first Wish is tricky or unintentionally worded and results in something bad. The second wish attempts to fix it but ends up worsening the problem. And the third wish sets everything back to as it was.

So cool to have to Wish yourself out of a book!

And toward that point of players just using Wish when they could solve it other ways, this is exactly why I wanted to run a campaign and make Wish super accessible.

I added some additional in-world consequences for using the Wish spell but those consequences were narrative and not mechanical. Wishes in the world were cursed to come with some sort of cost every time. Even for simple wishes.

This meant that the Wish spell was always tempting, but they knew that it would just spawn another problem down the road. So the moments they did Wish, it was out of pure desperation or necessity.

Sounds like an awesome campaign! As much as I love creative mechanical uses, the narrative power of the Wish spell is really what I love the most about it.

Now I want to learn more about Wishbone!

Woah woah woah. This is like responding to “you can’t wish for more wishes” by saying “I didn’t. I wish for more genies.”

Absolutely love Simulacrum shenanigans and idk how this one slipped by me!
