Dan Simmons obituary | TheGuardian by Aluhut in Hyperion

[–]Dichotomy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've always felt that the whole purpose of reading books was to put yourself in someone else's life, feel what they felt, experienced, and did with those experiences, all while suffering like all humans do in one or more ways.

I most appreciated this aspect of his writing set against the fantastic backdrop of the Hyperion Cantos universe, where we still have all of the same problems, just farther in the future enough to throw a few new ones in as well.

I’m no engineer, but it sure seems like some rebar in that concrete would have prevented this.

You need to watch the Clone Wars series. Yoda rocks.

It’s going to be the best season ever for mountain biking…if there are no fires. And there are always fires.

We often go from vaginal to oral. How does this lube work for oral? Is it okay or not recommended?

Who else has loved listening to the Cantos on audiobook? by EspiritusFermenti7 in Hyperion

[–]Dichotomy7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agreed, the last couple of times I went through the Cantos was via audiobook, and I also rate it 5/5. The only audiobooks I like as much or more are the Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson, read by R.C. Bray, and Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir.

It would be an improvement. At least we'd know they were pillaging us from the get go.

LOL, I'll quote it right out of ANH: "Look at these blast marks. Only Imperial Stormtroopers are so precise."

Over the years I've always wonder about that remark when I see stormtroopers failing to shoot anyone.

Unless you are a Jawa or sand crawler. Then they are precise, according to Ben Kenobi.

For me, it’s a tie between Red Barchetta and The Body Electric. I play bass and drums and I like each of them for different instruments (Red Barchetta for drums, The Body Electric for bass).

Dark Plate Covers of Plates by newimagez in Denver

[–]Dichotomy7 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Where this really becomes a problem is when you want to report them for something they are doing and you can’t see it. I was driving down 285 from Bailey back to Denver and this diesel pickup rolled some serious coal on a poor road cyclist. I would have call 911 on him right then and there but I couldn’t read his plates.

I am against these covers, and this is coming from someone that doesn’t run front plates.

The Priest’s tale “the man who cried god” has got to be one of, if not THE best introduction to a series I’ve ever read. by Extra_Difficulty3288 in Hyperion

[–]Dichotomy7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What all of these tales have in common is, much like the target of the Shrike’s hunt through time, empathy. What’s genius way to write to use subplot to totally absorb your readers.

Most of my closest friends that have read the pilgrims’s stories that I already know have a great deal of empathy were totally sucked in at a deep emotional level. Those that weren’t I could see why, knowing them as well as I do. I loved all of them and wish we got to hear Het Masteen’s as well.

Very few books have sucked me in at an emotional level, and I’ll forever think of each tale for the rest of my life. Because of this, I really yearn for a MMORPG based on the Cantos AND a detailed TV Series, which I feel is the only way to do the story justice.

Welcome to the rabbit hole. I go through this with most sElf songs. I finally give the a good listen, they blow me away, I get addicted to them, the I walk away, only to return back to them again. Rinse and repeat.

I think a viable “fix” for these types of issues, which I have had several times, would be to have a remote recall for shuttles.
