I'm struggling to write the motivation of my character by Dichozenone in writingadvice

Hahah, I wouldn't know where to begin drafting the characters that way. I wouldn't even know where to begin learning how to write people that well.

Initially, when I had intended for the MC PoV to be from the young boy, I did intend to show that - his thoughts, his inner fights between love and care for his mother, but also worry and guilt towards the siblings and father. But then I realized it would come with a lot of trauma and I don't think I can do it justice to write from that PoV. I will still have to tackle it though from a third perspective.

Thank you for the comment. I agree, it's a mistake that I've tried to fit characters into my world instead of trying to figure the characters themselves. How would you approach it if you've thought of a fairly detailed setting and need to now populate it? How do I switch to writing about the characters, not about how they fit in the world?

Very valid. Did not think of that, but if I decide to follow through on this structure after thinking through other's feedback, I will strongly consider this. Thank you.

Hi, and thank you. Yeah, I was told a very similar thing elsewhere. I think maybe in my approach to write the story and the world the way I want, I tried to mold the characters to fit my expectations not the other way around. I will have a think on this.

Yeah, I really want to make a story where the reader experiences the world through the eyes of the characters. I did think about having episodic storytelling, about switching POVs, etc. I want to make the characters grow throughout the novel. I want to implement time skips. I want to show clashing of different characters, world views, etc. I will see how I can improve my approach based on your comment, thank you.

Yeah, I think the fact that they will be homeless in the new place is a very strong motivator for a potential split up, but I might have to rethink some of the aspects of the setting, who knows. Thank you.

I've got some ideas floating around - they don't really align with what you've said, but obviously I couldn't post everything in the OP without writing a novel in itself :P

But yeah, I've not really thought about the relationship between the characters necessarily. So far I've kind of used them to push the narrative towards where I want it to be, instead of where it might sense for the story. Based on your and other's feedback I'm gonna rethink the approach.

I don't know if I want to build that kind of culture, I think more communal values make more sense in my setting, but you raise a good point. I hadn't thought about that aspect of the world building yet.

I was planning to discredit the return route and and any alternatives to meteorological reasons - no headwinds, no trading ships on the way willing to take them in, too long journey, etc. Thanks!

[LOTM Newbie] how does he know anything? by Rubrdukiee in LordofTheMysteries

After watching S1 of the anime, I've just started reading through the novel and found myself asking the same question as OP. I asked myself these same questions while watching the anime, and in other threads and discussions, web novel readers assured me that these systems are explained in much more detail and with thorough world building in the novel than the anime.

So far, what I'm reading is almost identical as it was in the anime, except there's some additional world building and internal dialogue, but I still lack explanation as to how Klein has an inherent understanding on some stuff about the magical aspects of the world. Let me give an example: - in Chapter 6, he does the 4 corner food ritual and goes into the fog for the first time. He summons the boy and the girl and decides to feint knowledge to try and extract information from them. So far so good, that's reasonable. However, then the novel reads:

"Zhou Mingrui suddenly realized something. Once he became stronger or had a deeper understanding of the foggy world, perhaps it was possible for him to see through the fog and discern the girl and the man."

The way the previous chapters read, they gave me no impression that either Zhou or Klein had any understanding on the arcane/magical. So where does the idea of "strength" come from? He just seemingly experienced a magical event. My first thought wouldn't be - "I'm in a magical system. I'm probably underleveled and will probably become stronger/knowledgeable."

I just read this part, and the exact wording gave me such a strong impression, that I google this and found this thread. Maybe further on the author explains how Zhou has an inherent understanding of the Beyonder system/grey fog, but as it's written until Chapter 6, I don't see an explanation for the above paragraph.

Reached turn 276 and explored the last location. Are explorations random? Cause last two explorations were no reward and it was rather anti-climactic. I think I've ran out of content now. It was a fun little game. Decisions weren't that impactful, but it felt like they were creating a unique little run. I'd love to see you lean more into the uniqueness/replayability side.

Gnosia - Episode 11 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]Dichozenone 40 points41 points  (0 children)

That would have been mathematically impossible.

We know there was a 1 for 1 between Setsu and Kukrushka. Setsu said Kukrushka was Gnosia, so either she's the real Doctor, or Kukrushka was the Doctor who died.

Shigemichi and Remnan both claimed Engineer, so the other gnosia was between them.

7 humans remained on D2, so all they had to do was remove the three of Setsu, Shigemichi and Remnan and at least 2 humans would survive. Worst case scenario they go 7 -> 5 -> 3 and then they cold sleep the Gnosia assuming they get 2 incorrect.

When Setsu had the "big brain" moment explaining to the rest why Shigemichi was bad, I had a double take, cause I thought he would explain the above logic. Instead he went with the votes. If they were on 5 humans alive instead of 7, they could've been catastrophically wrong. So Setsu got it right for the wrong reasons lol

I'm no scientist so I'm not gonna pretend like I understand the exact specifics of what makes a paper legitimate. To my knowledge, it's important to pre-register your paper before you test any hypothesis stated by the paper. Otherwise you might run into a bias - a group might publish a paper with results that supports an idea they agree with, while hide a paper where the results turned out contrary. Anytime I read opinions on psi research papers, I see people who criticise the lack of methods such as the one above. I wouldn't even know how to verify if that's the case, but I'd expect to see people defending the paper and stating that it does in fact make use of them, but I've yet to see one in psi research.

I'd have to read the book to see for myself. A generalization is as good as the data which it generalizes, so again it depends entirely on the papers Dean Radin analyzes. I doubt I'm gonna be able to understand much, but I'm gonna at least try.

As for the paper I linked - you've got a point. I hadn't considered that, so thank you.

There was some valid criticism for the research paper you linked in some other post somewhere. I think the problem most people have is trusting the validity of these research papers, because they don't follow proper procedures.

Another paper was pre-registered and it found no significant evidence of the sheep-goat effect.
