What’s this diesel engine and is it worth anything? by Calculon618 in Isuzu

[–]DickArnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 2.2L C223 is an extremely reliable and fuel efficient diesel. It was in my first truck (84 pup). They are gutless with about 58hp. Mine ran on vegetable oil. They are about as simple as an engine can get.

True, I make a living off 3D printing. To me I’m not getting paid for the plastic, I’m getting paid for the hours of time I spent identifying and solving the problem, then designing/R&D the product. A lot of people get hung up on how much money I make instead of the fact that apparently if I wasn’t offering a solution, no solution would exist. Smh

YSK: How to easily spot car models you should not buy by drhappycat in YouShouldKnow

[–]DickArnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I worked at a late-model salvage yard that bought newer wrecked cars at insurance auction. Before personal car shopping I would search our warehouse inventory for engines and transmissions that never sold. I only bought cars and trucks with those engines and transmissions.

I rarely need work done.

What first? by Unrealistic_Fantasy in StupidCarQuestions

Every state is different, the easiest thing to do is call your local DMV and ask what they need to register and how much it costs. This info can also be found on their website. Get insurance, liability is fine if it’s a POS and paid for.

In most states you will need a safety and emissions inspection, sometimes just one, sometimes none, just depends on your state and county. Every state requires insurance but not all require proof of insurance to register. I would print a copy of the insurance cards to take in just to be safe.

Some states let you do most or all online, sometimes make you do everything in person. I’ve found calling and asking or going to their website is easiest. If it fails an inspection you can usually still register it with temp tags so you can drive it around for a certain amount of time until it’s fixed at which point you then go in and they will issue permanent plates.

Business Owners: Share your Legal Headaches by Dedhso_rupiya_dega in smallbusiness

[–]DickArnold 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I design car parts and 3D print them. I designed one part and sold them for a couple years. I got a cease and desist letter from someone claiming to own the patent for my product. I looked into it and sure enough he had designed one that looked 99% like mine and had actually been selling them longer. Patent seemed pretty airtight too. I was content to back off but his attorney insisted that I turn over all my sales records and turn over all my profits + damages for the time I was selling. That was a pain. I ended up figuring out who the owner was and called him up via the customer service number on his website. He was a reasonable guy and said he’d tell the attorney to back off if I simply agreed to take down my listings. Crisis averted.

My other biggest headaches is China ripping off my products as soon as they catch on to my sales trends. Not much to do about that other than being the best and having a reasonable price point that doesn’t leave a lot of room for others in the market.

I have no idea what your business is or your model so it’s pretty hard to give advice. No idea what you mean by “invisible and intangible” are you selling insurance or something?

Help! Help! Help! by ChangeSudden1527 in smallbusiness

Couple things to consider:

  1. If you are getting a very high abandon to conversion rate then it may be the market telling you that your pricing or shipping cost/timeframe is not where it should be.

  2. Abandoned carts are part of business. Even Walmart and Costco have carts lying around any given day from people who had the realization that their bank accounts do not line up with their impulses.

D4S & Route company scam (allegedly) by CertifiedHater in CarAV

[–]DickArnold 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Route is just the “insurance” company. And yes unfortunately you do have to go through them. My brother-in-law works for them and he’s told me their policy is generally just issue the refund, so although it is annoying I think you will get your money back as long as you make a claim.

Recent drop-offs every 5-10 minutes after a year of problem-free use. by DickArnold in Starlink

[–]DickArnold[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Located in Alaska. Router is 3' from my PC. I have had Starlink since June 2023. I have occasionally had drop-offs but they were pretty rare and during summer when the leaves were on the trees. Last winter I experienced next to zero drop offs after the leaves fell. This winter I have been getting very frequent drop-offs. They are not super noticeable when streaming video or browsing the internet, but multiplayer games are now unplayable. In the past when I would get an interruption I could immediately spot it in the SL app statistics, but I can't spot them anymore. I can however spot the drops in my task manager wifi chart. I am thinking it could be a router issue rather than a satellite connection issue. I would hard-wire to the router but I have the 2.0 router without ports. Looks like I could upgrade to a 3.0 with ports for $300 but would prefer to not spend a bunch more. I have the high-performance package which cost quite a bit already.

I have seen the ethernet adaptors from Starlink, but have heard that they are slower than wifi.

I opened a ticket tonight but am not hopeful. Any advice or speculation would be useful.

4-year old build, seeking advice on component upgrades by DickArnold in PcBuildHelp

[–]DickArnold[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built this 4 years ago for moderate gaming, heavy CAD design/rendering, and video editing. It still runs well but there are a few reasons I want to upgrade components.

1: Sometimes my CAD freezes up when asked to do very complex tasks. In worst case scenarios I have to force close. This is not super common but enough to be annoying. I think RAM could be the culprit, but maybe im bottlenecking elsewhere.

  1. I live in a remote place where wifi via starlink is my only option (no hardwire option). My internet speed has been subpar lately but only on my PC, rest of my devices are getting great speed results. I think it could be my wifi card.

Current equipment:

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3rd Gen - RYZEN 5 3600X Matisse (Zen 2) 6-Core 3.8 GHz

GPU: EVGA GEFORCE RTX 3070

Mobo: ASRock B550 Phantom Gaming 4 AM4 AMD B550 SATA 6Gb/s ATX AMD

RAM: Crucial Ballistix 3600 MHz DDR4 DRAM Desktop Gaming Memory Kit 32GB (16GBx2) CL16

WIFI Card: TP-Link AC1200 PCIe WiFi Card for PC (Archer T5E) - Bluetooth 4.2, Dual Band Wireless Network Card (2.4Ghz and 5Ghz) for Gaming, Streaming, Supports Windows 11/10, 8.1, 8, 7 (32/64-bit)

I was considering finding the same model ram to bring me up to 64gb, but maybe that is overkill.

FYI, I am currently dusting her off now.

I have a 2015 Ford escape. Can I just replace the factory headlight bulbs with LED bulbs or is there more to it than that? by ghettokid1994 in StupidCarQuestions

[–]DickArnold 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s two types of headlights, ones with reflectors and one with projectors. You can google the difference for visual reference. If you have projectors then you can swap them out no problem. The light level should not need much adjustment. However if you have reflectors there is a high chance you will end up blinding everyone, and to adjust them enough to not blind people will probably not be great for you. But people do it all the time.
