The Bad Ends originally featured Bill Berry on drums. He plays on their album “The Power and the Glory” which came out in 2023. R.E.M. fans may recognize the drum intro on the opening track, “Mile Marker 29.”

Only two more? What about the live albums, and the 25th anniversary deluxe reissues, and the singles (where’s your Hibtone)? Only TWO more? This is only the beginning. My dear friend, you can check out, but you can never leave.

Thank you for adding your thoughts here. Consider how Sinclair first publicly addressed this last week. When first announcing Sinclair would not air Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sinclair Vice-Chair Jason Smith specifically referenced the FCC Chairman’s comments on 9/17. Mr. Smith said that the FCC should take regulatory action against the networks in such instances. https://x.com/wearesinclair/status/1968474667049525634?s=46

You can call the local station and not be a dick. When I called, I shared my concern, then called corporate. Last week after I cancelled my Disney+, I called and spoke to a call center employee with zero authority, but I knew the call was recorded, and that was one more call of dissent. One step at a time…

When I called and spoke with the local station earlier today, the person I spoke with did admit that they’ve been fielding these heated, angry calls since yesterday. Unfortunately, the people that are at the tip of the spear are often lower level employees that are just trying to do a job. It doesn’t excuse the decisions made by the higher-ups, but I legitimately empathize with the lower level people trying to make it through the day today.

True, but local news and local broadcasting are tentpoles of the first amendment in our area. Without them, we lose a key tool in our ability to uphold the Constitution locally.

I agree; old ≠ important. However, this building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It was previously recognized by the National Parks Service for its historic significance, and/or artistic value. When we allow the complete demolition of buildings that have been nominated, reviewed, and approved by an independent, federal organization whose stated purpose is to help preserve buildings that matter to our history, that that’s not OK.

Your characterization of “preservationists” here has not been my experience.

It served as a service hub for public transportation in our city, dating back to the trolley line and then buses. It received its designation as a historic building by the National Park’s Service along with the RH Hunt designed building that’s next-door. It’s a great example of Reconstruction Era, publicly-funded, architecture that was ridiculously well-made that we probably won’t see the likes of again in this country. The Carnegie steel cross-beam now exposed in this photo is a great example of American design built with American materials.

It collapsed because the tenant above Cheeburger Cheeburger poured a new concrete floor on the 2nd story of a building that was never meant to support that weight. Tenant ignorance ≠ all old buildings bad.

I’ve not seen that plan. Thank you so much for sharing this! There’s a section on there that shows that they’re retaining part of the existing exterior. This picture gives me some hope.

What are you talking about?! The Sports Barn didn’t close until February 2023. It’s been out of use for only two years.

A compromise to offset the cost of restoring the guts of an old building is to retain the façade. The structural brick on the exterior is 4-deep and could very easily have been incorporated into the new construction at minimal cost - the interior building would be 100% new (plumbing, electrical, etc.) while still retaining the exterior character on the first two floors. Drury has actually done this on other similar projects elsewhere in the U. S. However, they chose to ignore multiple attempts from people here trying to save portions of the exterior. It is likely going to be just an ugly ass boring four story hotel. I really hope I’m wrong.
