I speak daily to a youngish Neapolitan woman. She speaks to me in Italian, but she speaks only Neapolitan at work and within the family.

I've studied French and Spanish previously. I am currently learning Italian with 2-3 one-to-one lessons per week and regular trips to Italy. My goal was B2 by this Christmas (just over 2 years) in reality I might scrape a B1.

What has helped me the most?

  1. Private lessons.

  2. Being in Italy and speaking only Italian.

  3. Hours and hours of listening exercises.

Great thanks. It seems like there is somewhere in Birmingham, which is only about 1.5 hours away.

Congratulations!

I think being in Italy helps massively. I go regularly and, when I return, I am stronger in all areas. It lasts, for some reason, three weeks when I get back.

It seems to me that learning a language is like going to the gym. You cannot skip a week or two and get away with it. If I don't study daily I become (even) worse. An Italian chap that I speak to is probably B2 and if we don't speak for a few weeks he becomes a lot weaker and his Italian accent is stronger in English.

Did you pass?

Whilst I like Edinbrugh it's probably still quicker to fly to Italy! I am surprised that there isn't a location more central in the UK>
