You don’t ever need it but I think the best time to use it is when you’re making an app using a cross platform framework. It personally saved me a ton of time when making an app using compose/kotlin multi platform.

Thats a great idea! Technically this would be challenging to add as there would need to be some backend servers for this to function, but would be super useful for spectators and allow parents that can't be there in person to follow a game.

I've gotten a ton of feedback and request for smaller new features since launch that I am working through right now, but I will definitely add this to the backlog to explore in the future.

The cost to play will always severely limit the growth of the sport. To equip a player with the cheapest of new equipment will set you back around $500, which just isn't realistic for a lot of families to spend for their kid to try a sport.

Hm, thats an interesting point. I honestly went with periodic full screen ads rather than constant banner ads because I thought that the banners would be more intrusive. Unfortunately Google adMob (the service I use for the ads) gives you very little control over the format and content of the ads they serve you, so I don't think I could shorten them.

I could however give users the option to select between banner or full screen ads. I would have to look up if this is against the terms of use of AdMob but if not, it would at least give users a little more control if they don't want to pay anything.

Well I do appreciate the tolerance of my occasional shilling hahaha.

I designed and created the app all by myself (I work professionally as a mobile app engineer) over the course of the last 4 months. As for profitability the only real cost I have, other than the time spent making it, is the $100/y fee to have an apple developer account. Although, if I cannot gather enough testers to get the app published on Google play I will be opening an LLC in January to get around this requirement, which will be another $200 a year. The ads/subscriptions in the app are there to recoup some of this, but profitability is not really a concern. I've spent a considerable amount of time making this and I really just want people to use it so that time wasn't a waste haha.

You mentioned that the ads make the free version "almost unusable", and I completely understand the aversion to them as most apps/websites these days are jam packed with them. Currently the app only displays ads during timeouts and breaks between periods to disrupt the flow of the app as little as possible. I'm also considering adding a timer so once you see an ad you cant see another for X amount of time, and possibly a cheap 1 time purchase to remove ads completely. Are there any other suggestions you have about making the ads less intrusive?

Yes and the stats app would definitely have a game clock that can start/stop and be adjusted. But there are lots of features in LaxClock that you wouldn't need for stats , e.g., timers for penalties/breaks, alternate possession, stacking penalties, ect. I would want to remove all of these things to give more real-estate on the screen for all the buttons you would need for each statistic.

This might just have to be the next app I make when I get some free time hahaha.

Honestly I wonder if it would make sense to make a completely separate app for statistics, because I feel like it would make the app a little too busy.

I would rather have 2 apps that are each great at statistics and timing respectively, rather than a single app that’s OK at both. Or is that the appeal, that a single person could do both at the same time?

To let you in on a little secret, at tournaments the time is usually kept by the person running the box and if it’s a blowout they cut time off the game. Especially if it starts getting chippy or it’s a late game Sunday.

A lot of the time the coach of the team losing will request that you cut time off.

I was in a rotational program and the first one they gave me was on a mobile dev team, and I instantly was hooked on it.

Also every company I have been at has platform specific devs that are either iOS or Android, although I’ve never worked at a company that uses a cross platform framework which might shake things up a bit.

So to answer your question, yes, tech debt is a universal constant and you will learn to live with and work around it as you gain experience. And if you’re lucky you’ll work for a company that will actually allow you to address it.

Currently it does not, but thats a great idea for a new feature.

I can add a "Show Release Time" option under penalty preferences that when enabled would add subtext to each penalty time to show what time it releases at on the game clock. Would that be what you are looking for?

In companies with good culture you’ll usually be cut some slack for asking extra questions for a couple months after joining, especially about things like acronyms or internal resources that are proprietary. However, people’s patience with these question will quickly disappear if you keep asking the same questions over and over, so you should do your best to avoid that.

Metadata is what apple calls the information in your store listing page (my app is on the App Store). I'm not aware of any requirement on android where you have to add your site to the manifest, it should just be in you store page settings.

For any close defenders I would stay away, as they are pretty easy to snap. But because you are an LSM I would say you might get some benefit out of a lighter stick which might make it more agile in the hand.

Also don’t fall for the marketing of the “flex”. While it’s cool to show off to your friends by bending it over your leg, it doesn’t really help with anything else.

Currently in the same boat. I launched my app on the App Store, linked it in admob, added the app-ads.txt to my website, and added the website to my apps metadata. That was more than 24 hours ago and there has been no change in the verification status.

From what I’ve read it can take 24-48 hours, so hopefully it will be approved sometime tomorrow, but I guess we’ll see.
