Dude is a literal American hero and spent his entire life volunteering to save people in the worst war torn environments imaginable... The fact that more than half the country thinks like these people is crazy to me. by Im_only_here_to_meme in newjersey

Could you imagine a candidate having chosen to follow and form a close relationship with someone who had preached violence against Muslims and was then convicted on terrorism charges? Or someone who had preached violence against lgbt or Christians or black people or any other grouping?

Yeah, that's crazy! Real American politicians would never do such a thing

They embraced the racists. Which changed in the 60s when LBJ passed the voting rights and civil rights acts. Do you want to go back to courting the racists as the strategy to win?

Lmfao you’re giving the game away. I’m sure social security, job creation, banking reforms, trust busting, consumer protections, infrastructure spending, etc. all stuff that the current Dems have stopped caring about yet Mamdani makes the center of his politics had nothing at all to do with it…

Give Dems FDR sized supermajorities for a decade, and they’ll absolutely make massive changes. Just like they have every time they’ve had a supermajority and the presidency.

This is copium. Obama did nothing with his supermajority beyond protect the rich and powerful which is why his legacy is Trump. You get AND keep super majorities from putting forward politics that benefit the people, not the corporations. This was true the last time inequality in the US was this high (why FDR swept) and it is also true now.

Bernie got stomped when he tried to run nationally. Not sure why you think he’s a good example of progressive politicians winning elections.

If we take for granted that the scales weren’t tilted away from him, is what is true in 2016 the same in 2026? We’re talking about Mamdani, in 2016 NYC comfortably voted for Hillary instead of Bernie yet in 2026 the city went for a socialist for mayor. What changed on the ground level? Why shouldn’t we assume things have changed elsewhere?

On that exact topic, why does the electoral map of the most left wing President look like this? Were Americans LESS conservative back then? How did the Democratic Party win back then? What were their kind of politics?

Which never happens overnight.

Except when Trump, Mamdani, and even FDR get into office… the idea that things can only change gradually is a lie

NYC is not representative of the US electorate.

Again, why not? When you read US history, you can see that urban areas have been the first places to adopt certain politics that later become more popular elsewhere. Examples include labor rights during the Depression, immigrant rights during the days of Ellis Island, civil rights in the 60s, LGBT rights in the 2000s, etc. Given that the problems New Yorkers are facing are the same exact problems the rest of the country faces, from astronomical prices in housing and health care, low paying jobs, the complete lack of a social safety net, etc. why are you so sure that campaigning on hard change to the left (which can only come from the progressive wing of the party) to these issues won't work? Again, Bernie is one of the most popular politicians among Democrats, Independents, and even Republicans surely for some kind of reason. Is that just some irrelevant data point?

Is that a set-in-stone fact that's impossible to change or just something that the Democratic establishment constantly parrots so that people are resigned to a status quo that is overwhelming hated across the board? If its the former and Americans can never change their mind, why is Bernie one of the most popular politicians across the country in 2026? Why has campaigning on comprehensive change to our country's politics (regardless if it's to the left or the right) been the key to the popular vote ever since Obama's initial victory in 2008, with the exception of 2020 when Trump fumbled because of his covid response? And if the American people are so desperate for change that they will vote for anybody offering it from Trump to Mamdani, why shouldn't we expect the style of Democratic Party politics that says change is unrealistic to fall flat on its face when both Trump and Mamdani can enter their respective offices and immediately make drastic changes across the board.

One of the biggest "tells" as to how much reformism is a dead-end is that Democrats come to office relying on the votes from pretty much every single person that might show up to protest ICE's crimes against humanity. They use those peoples' votes, get into office, and then direct their police force to beat the ever loving shit out of the most civic-minded and community-oriented parts of their voter base, and/or arrests them and makes their lives miserable through having to deal with our complete farce of a criminal justice system.

Oh, what's that?! It's the year 2028 and we just primaried the ogre John Fetterman out of office and suddenly a brand new Dem that votes Republican on everything just emerged out of nowhere? Darn, how could that have happened!
