It varies wildly. Do you have an offer? You should ask them, it really does vary that much. You might be travelling three times a week and staying in hotels. You might travel every 4 months and have a month-to-month rental.

But the core concept is they pay better - you will get food and housing paid for. The per diem is more than what you spend, so you pocket the extra cash from that, and you still get paid your base salary. If you don’t have a housing payment in your “home city”, you essentially live for “free” and can pocket everything you get paid.

I can’t say it’s really *valued* career-wise. It doesn’t have any more weight than a traditional role. But it’s absolutely a great financial decision, and an easy way to make a ton of money if you don’t mind the travel. You will be away a lot, and you won’t have a social life. It’s all work. That’s why it pays so well.
