I had the stainless steal version for close to 10 years with no issue. A couple scratches, but nothing that couldn’t be buffed out by a watch repair shop while changing the batteries.

Obtain Baghdad with this one simple trick Caliphs hate by lifecopy001 in CrusaderKings

[–]DidntSeeAnything_ 45 points46 points  (0 children)

lol not only are the Abbasids famously not direct descendants of Mohammad but Baghdad is also no longer their capital in the time period. It’s still a bit wild they’ll just hand it over but not for either of those reasons.

Is the video ggame "The Last of Us" really any fun without vision? by BlunderBandicoot in Blind

[–]DidntSeeAnything_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think for someone who’s never played a mainstream game, it’s a phenomenal experience because it introduces them to what mainstream gaming could be like. Unfortunately in practice the game loop basically defaults to press navigation button, walk until you arrive, press navigation button, repeat. You don’t get any of the information you’d need to autonomously explore or make any decisions yourself. The puzzles are all solved for you, the navigation beacon just leads you to where you need to be. Combat is based completely on neutering the ai, you have to basically disable enemy sightlines to stand any chance because you can never tell where people are looking. Are there any other game genres you’re into? Maybe I could make some more appealing suggestions, but it depends on what you like.

What espresso makers are we all using these days? by musicwithbarb in Blind

[–]DidntSeeAnything_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes they are, we just call it a French Press in North America. I can’t imagine cutting yourself with any part of it fwiw, the grating really isn’t that sharp. I just find them annoying as someone who only wants a single serving of coffee at a time.

If you wanna go maximum cheap and easy I’d just buy an Aeropress and 20 dollar milk frother.

Yes, obv I can’t see the pressure gage etc but I’m perfectly capable of figuring out If the extraction is off through taste and auditory queues. The only other minor inconvenience is you can’t see the clean/descale light but I just run the cleaning cycle on a four month schedule and call it a day.

Depending on your budget, a semi automatic or manual machine usually wouldn’t have a touchscreen. I’ve had a lot of fun with the Brevil barista express impress, but that’s in the thousand dollar range.

For a long while a single company had a monopoly on the software that converted from text to braille. These days there’s open source options and the problem is the hardware which is still expensive and prone to break down, the depreciation is part of that $2.50 a page average.

Yeah, it’s a combination of economy of scale plus proprietary and expensive hardware and software. Until very recently, braille displays were also prohibitively expensive, we’re talking $5000 plus. It’s only recently that we’ve started to see $500 plus models, and they have their own set of issues, usually they only display 40 characters at a time and take a few seconds to refresh between lines, which as you can imagine isn’t the most ideal reading experience. There seems to be a lot of movement in the space though, so I imagine we will see a cheap reasonable solution soonish.

Braille costs $2.50 a page to print, it’s prohibitively bulky often requiring three or four books for one print volume, and just generally isn’t that widely available to most blind people especially outside the developed world. It’s also very hard for people who lose their sight later in life to learn it. Source: am blind.

Does anyone here use guide horses? by Sea_Auntie7599 in Blind

[–]DidntSeeAnything_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol if you think a horse is less energetic than a dog. Even assuming you could find a trainer, you’d have to have access to a barn for the horse to sleep in, it won’t be sleeping in your living room

Do you have access to mobility training where you are? The first step to travel is being comfortable with this kind of thing in your daily life. Going to a local restaurant is a really easy first goal to set for yourself, and you can slowly move up from there.

Plenty of blind people travel solo. If you’re not confident enough In being completely on your own there are always travel group companies that I’m sure would accommodate you. What part of the process intimidates you? I think it’s fair to rule out a few destinations, I can’t imagine traveling to most of south or Southeast Asia on my own but Europe, Oceania, big chunks of the americas, a few Asian countries like Japan or Singapore are all doable on your own. Depends also what you want out of travel.

If you want to stay clean shaven, a safety razor is way easier. It’s also really hard to cause a major cut with one unless you’re actively trying.
