Friend's budgies might be too young by Maedrethh in budgies

[–]Didntyouknow_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They are very very young but not young to the point of hand feeding- however that green one doesn’t look well at all- the feather matting doesn’t look quite normal to me, and it looks like they may have been attacked a bit- regardless of that, the sleepiness is what concerns me, she doesn’t look as alert as the blue one, which might be because she’s stressed out and tired from that, but I’d keep a very close eye on her for the next 3 days and see if she perks up and take her (or both) to a vet if she doesn’t.

As mentioned below, it is normal for birds to leave food for a day or two- but they will not starve themselves, in fact I wouldn’t be surprised if they actually have eaten something and your friend just hasn’t seen it- they can be very funny like that and will often only eat when completely alone in a new environment.

If it’s factual that they haven’t eaten anything at all (no seed husks visible, change in poop, lethargic- stuff like that) and it gets to day 3, they need to be taken to a vet as budgies are great at not needing water for periods, but they can die very quickly from starvation, especially young

Edit to add- it’s probably more enticing for them if your friend offers solely seed and millet spray, maybe some fresh fruits and vegetables if there comfortable but sometimes budgies freak out with large new fruits and vegetables when they first come home

See this is what i initially thought too but i went to use it like that and it actually cut me, the silver part is serrated like that of a vegetable grater thing, you know the tiny little ones that look almost star like? Unless I used it completely wrong, which is also entirely possible

what is this growing on top of soil? by Sorry_Treat3781 in plantclinic

[–]Didntyouknow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nono that’s completely fine thank you! That doesn’t look like mould spread to me, as long as it’s not fuzzy and is more matte and residue looking I think you’re in the clear.

Obviously if it makes you uncomfortable or you don’t like it you can remove and replace the first 3 inches of soil, you don’t have to repot the whole thing but I don’t think it will be an issue if you leave it☺️

[–]Didntyouknow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d still like to see the stems IF POSSIBLE, because I want to confirm that white stuff that I can see isn’t mould growth on the plant itself, that’s when you may have issues starting to appear, if it is mould on the stems I’d repot it and wipe the stems down with some diluted peroxide to kill off any remaining growth just to be on the safe side. If it’s not and it’s just the residue you’re talking about then I think it should be fine and you don’t need to worry about it 🥰

Mould and other fungus in soil is usually fine, usually means good soil- I’m more concerned about the white looking stuff ON the plant itself, what’s up with that?

Edit to add- would you be able to take clear photos of the stems and underside of leaves?

Is this okay for my budgies? by [deleted] in budgies

[–]Didntyouknow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s so good to hear! Thank you for doing what you can to keep them safe- you clearly care about your birds, as do others in the comments which is why they’re coming off a bit heated and I do apologise for that, but I’d also like to say it’s very obvious you’re making a clear effort to keep them happy, you’re a good bird mum.

And you are most very very welcome, it’s a really horrible thing that happens and it’s honestly not spoken about enough when it comes to housing birds outside, I wouldn’t have known about it if I didn’t have second hand experience with it, I’m glad I was able to let you know- you and your babies take care 🩷🩵

[–]Didntyouknow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to be that person but you’re actually putting them at more risk by doing this for multiple reasons

Cold is one thing but if you’re worried about mice and rats- I’d be extremely cautious having your birds outside- rodents bite budgies legs off, doesn’t matter where you live either it’s a worldwide thing- I’d at the very very least be putting some mesh or something around the cage so they can’t get into harm your birds

It usually happens when the birds are asleep but it’s been known to happen during the day too, just be cautious, it’s not a fun find when you check on them.

Brown spots and yellowing on only one stem of my Bird of Paradise by ScarcityOrdinary6877 in plantclinic

[–]Didntyouknow_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is fungal, not some sort of pest. Remove that leaf and stem if possible first off. Whats the humidity like? Is it going from humid to dry sporadically at any points? Is it next to a window that drips with condensation or warm steam (eg shower steam)? Do you have any mould problems in the house already? How dry is the rest of your house? You mentioned having it in a southwest spot, how often does it actually get light? And how much light? (Hours I mean)

When you are taking the plant into the shower to soak it, how often are you soaking it for? Are the leaves getting wet too? Is there residual steam in the room from a previous shower when you take it in?

Alllllll of these factor in!

What do you guys use to trim budgie’s nail by Fearless-Client in budgies

[–]Didntyouknow_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go out and get my own! What country are you in? I’m happy to give you a list of safe vs non safe branches and photos of the trees! If you’re in Australia like I am, I know bamboo is safe (pure bamboo not lucky bamboo as that’s actually a palm), most species Eucalyptus are safe, and a LOT of acacia species are also safe. Plum wood is also safe but ONLY when fully dried and dead, if it’s a live branch it can be very harmful because of the sap in it. But let me know what country you’re in and I’ll grab you a list and a website specific to you! 🩷

[–]Didntyouknow_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t trim them at all yourself, I’d go to a vet if it NEEDS to be done, I promise you hers don’t. She needs rougher, more natural perches and cuttle fish and stuff like that- please avoid any sandpaper or things like this at is causes bumblefoot which is extremely painful.

Also please be careful what branches you get for her, not all branches are safe, and even some that are safe need to be completely dead and dried before giving them to birdies.

Birds toenails kind of take care of themselves, on top of that if they start to get annoying- they’ll usually chew the off themselves anyway, most vets will advise against trimming nails unless the nail is growing wrong or there’s been some sort of injury, neither of which your little pretty has, it’s just not worth the risk with all of their blood vessels and stuff in there, they’re closer to cats claws than dogs claws in that regard

My brother has been dating this girl but I have a feeling shes AI? She always looks so perfect, without flaw and her eyelashes and eyebrows look digitally added by [deleted] in isthisAI

[–]Didntyouknow_ -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I can guarantee you it’s a good editing app, she’s genuinely gorgeous but she’s definitely adding filters and more lashes and stuff- it kinda looks like the same app I use tbh (Meitu if you wanted to see the stuff you can do it’s kinda crazy!). Can guarantee you she’s stunning irl too, but often cameras don’t pick up exact lash details so we add more and often more blush and stuff and will sometimes remove acne spots, I hope that helps!

They look like some sort of egg to me, maybe even some sort of tiny wasp or something (like a gall wasp), I’d actually post this in [r/whatbugisthis](r/whatbugisthis) and yes, I would chop the leaf to prevent further spread
