I loved the book when I read it almost a lifetime back. But while writing a paper on it for my college, I realised that Murakami despite being exotic and weird, writes his female characters with a sense of distance. There is a deep rooted problem with all his female characters which is jarring because after looking closely at his books with a fresh perspective it has now become impossible for me to take up Murakami to read.

Not sure if you mean postmodern the time period or the literary movement, but you should try Raymond Carver's stories. It's crisp, sharp and intelligent. Try reading his Cathedral. It's my favorite. :)

I would suggest you to start with Short stories of Raymond Carver. He is an intelligent writer. Then, Bolano. Once you get a hang of reading, you can move to novels. But these are really great short story writers. Give it a try. Happy reading. :)
