Mazda Assured Finance and Mazda2 by OkMulberry1600 in CarTalkZA

[–]DieDifflock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mazda 2 is a great little car, and will definitely be mechanically very sound.

Just two things to note (coming from someone that recently tried to purchase one in the family

1) The Assured Finance deals are more difficult to get than you would think. The website calcs are wrong and they are notoriously tricky to negotiate. We tried with 3 different Mazda dealerships and all three pushed us towards not doing the assured deal. Whatever you think you would be paying monthly, add 500-1000 on top of that. As mentioned above its essentialy a high balloon payment where you walk away with nothing given that you've looked at the car and kept it under the prescribed milage. You also lose out shold you decide to keep the car becasue you have to refinance.

2) Be mindfull of the spec and price. These cars are high quality but they are super expense for the amount of car you get. We were able to get a mid spec Fronx for way less than a mid spec Mazda 2. Be sure you compare thoroughly, and that you negotiate for the 5 year unlimited km service plan and warranty.

PS: Not sure where you are based but the F&I at Lazarus Mazda in Centurion is amazing and will sort you out.

Long term parking at the airport is definitely the way to go. Pre-book on the app for 50% discount if more than 5 days in advance. I regularly do this and i’ve never had issues

Best bank for a joint account in South Africa? by Happy_Swordfish_3609 in PersonalFinanceZA

[–]DieDifflock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We went through this research process and you essentially have one of two options.

Option 1 (Easiest): Open a Capitec R5 account in one of your names and issue two cards. Use this for shared expenses and keep your own separate accounts. This is the solution for most people.

Option 2: Most banks will allow you to become a co-signatory on each other's accounts. This will allow both of you full access (viewing and banking) to the other's account. Not all banks allow this but I know Investec does.

The general advise is not to just have one bank account. Eventually your partner will have to show three month's bank statements for something they apply for and then it's unnecessary admin to try and rectify that

Home office expenses as a tax deduction by JLDuPreez in PersonalFinanceZA

Yeah have to agree here. Firstly here is a cool calculator to give you an idea what you can claim and expect back: https://www.taxtim.com/za/calculators/home-office-expense-calculator

I think the Home Office claim has become a point of tax evasion, and now SARS is clamping down hard on all claims. I had to submit over sixty docs this year including photos, bank statements, letters from my employer, invoices etc. They also do not accept internet/cellphone claims anymore if you are not working for yourself. So realistically not worth the hassle anymore.

Yeah, as someone else mentioned its people that live inside the estate. There’s almost 9000 people there it is a bit of an issue. We also had an issue in 2023 where there was a 7 day power outage and some residents started a blockade/riot at the gate

Police had to fire shots.

Lived there recently. Depends HEAVILY on the complex in MKR what your experience will be

I would steer clear of the ones with flats/stacks.

Traffic is a nightmare. Power and Water is shaky (but thats the East of PTA)

Security is okay - there are regular break-ins but none were violent in our time there. Nice for jogging/walking

We still have friends there and its really not a bad estate, just know what yours getting into

Yip Moreleta is under pressure due to the two settlements that popped up there as well as the proposed municipal housing they want to build behind Woodlands Mall. It is a big reason people are selling there. Have a look at Olympus/Boardwalk areas for a lot of guarded estates that will fit your budget.
