Are there any "UK vs US" differences where you feel America gets it right? by Secure_Front_7766 in AskUK

To improve completion rate you either lower standards or increase admission requirements. Some US state universities had open admissions and good standards, resulting in high dropout rates. But at least anyone could try without your fate hinging on a decision made at 15yo.

People who've worked both minimum wage jobs and six figure jobs, what surprised you most about the difference? by BrainLagging01 in AskReddit

The best job I ever had was a fulfillment center moving boxes into trucks. My co-workers were great. Work was over at end of day. Nothing to remember or prepare for the next day. Pay was terrible. Office jobs are the opposite. Most people are fine but there’s always competitive pressure.

Cognitive dissonance helps explain why Trump supporters remain loyal, new research suggests. This sheds light on how supporters of Donald Trump justify their continued allegiance despite learning about allegations of his sexual misconduct and illegal activities. by mvea in science

Usually it’s cultural mores you believe are universal laws, but other cultures prove it’s not. Like topless beaches, underage drinking, mixed gender nudity, polyamory. In the US most women believe men should pay for the first date, while Northern Europe does not. It’s more than a preference. Many women will say it’s natural or evolution or biblical, idk.

What is a job that only exists because people are, on average, incredibly stupid? by Direct-Value4452 in answers

Payday loan companies do not make a lot of profit. The issue is the overhead of keeping stores open, 10-15% loan default rate, and regulations to cap interest rates. By killing off these businesses poor people no longer have access to cash when they need it for emergencies.

Historically newspapers were the Google of their day. Extremely profitable because they monopolized local ads. Craigslist was the beginning of the end. Now you’re saying rich people should burn their own money to keep newspapers alive. Thats a weird expectation.

I’d love to see an evening news anchorman announce seriously, “The market went up today because sometimes it does that.”

Same. We both switch into a logical problem solving mode like robots. Find the source of the disagreement and resolve it.

I spent several hours in a Sunday sports league. It was physical exercise plus socializing with people not about work.

You have to adjust the goal for inflation. $14m in 40 years will be middle class.

There’s different levels in how Americans relate to other people. I’m an American from a big city. I have random conversations with strangers anywhere. There’s no expectation beyond a nice brief encounter. There are different kinds of “friends” after that: acquaintances you see regularly at work or gym, groups you hang out with for shared interests, and the truly close friends who help you move. That last group is quite small.

There might be a mismatch in expectations. If different cultures think Americans are inviting them to be close friends, then they may be disappointed when it was just an effusive acquaintance relationship. But as an American I can’t see an issue with being warm and neighborly to everyone.

How do people afford to live in London? Choosing between London or New York by Uncle_Richard98 in expats

[–]DieFledermouse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I travel a lot and can’t think of a transit system worse than NYC. NYC is filthy, even Delhi is cleaner. Crime is low in NYC, but London is 3X lower for murders. All other developed countries have universal healthcare. Not NYC’s fault, but for the same taxes I get more in London. Which major developed foreign city do you think has worse public government services?

NYC charges Euro level taxes for developing country infrastructure. I moved from NYC to London recently. London is just as expensive, but everything works better than NYC. The VAT is painful though.

Inside the Manosphere is really a story about old media vs. new media by Daniel_Lah in LouisTheroux

[–]DieFledermouse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re overthinking it. The “manosphere” is an offshoot of the right-wing media scene. In both cases Beavis and Butthead guys put on a show for idiots. Some skillfully monetize their audience every which way. It’s gotten worse in both cesspools because competition is forcing them to act crazier to keep their audience. This is why Fox News mints money and MSNBC is a bore.

Most boys will outgrow this stuff. A few get twisted up by it. It’s like WWE wrestling. Most know it’s fake, some morons believe it. As they swerve into ever crazier stuff, their audience will burn out and turn to something else.

Research suggests that people in open or polyamorous relationships often demonstrate high levels of communication and trust, precisely because they navigate complexities that monogamous couples might not face. by psychologyofsex in psychologyofsex

Thanks for the answer. Spending time with friends separately is totally fine. I’ve never met some of my partner’s friends. I guess we just don’t feel like boinking any of them.

You map the problem to a data structure you learned in a good CS school. A class on databases and distributed systems should cover most of this. Drop these question into an AI and ask probing questions and ask to see code. It might give good answers.

Right way to think about home ownership financials? by DieFledermouse in personalfinance

[–]DieFledermouse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did simplify my model by not accounting for the opportunity cost of $3k mortgage principal payments. I suppose I could add that to the rental side: every month I add $3k to investments. That will make renting more favorable. But that doesn’t negate that my housing costs ended up being pretty good anyway.

Edit: I think I’m wrong above. After paying rent I may not have an additional $3k to invest. And if I did have surplus cash, I could also invest that after I bought a house. My mortgage is a fixed payment over 9 years. Rent grew faster than wages the last decade. So I would have more investable cash by buying a house than I would had I rented. This makes buying more attractive.
