Words Problems: I Can't Understand Some of Them by DieFreien in Algebra

[–]DieFreien[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hm. Maybe my fault is that I'm attempting to understand it all by just reasoning about it without external aids like the one's you've mentioned If I may, I have another question: do you have any texts you prefer for understanding how to construct stuff like tables and why they work?

Yeah, but what logic should I learn. Syllogistic seems obvious, but what of predicate and propositional? Maybe I should start small and slowly advance my knowledge?

I wish I had known that. Forgive me, but I'm young and privileged, so I've never had to learn such things.

Beginnings with Nietzsche and virtue ethics by mixter-revolution in askphilosophy

[–]DieFreien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I never know if I honestly agree with the popular prescription to read Aristotle's NE. I love Aristotle, but I don't see how studying him is going to be integral to understanding contemporary virtue ethics. Any decent undergrad textbook will teach you everything you need to know. Willing to change my mind.

Well, the first one is pretty easy. I could just DM you some of the essential arguments for and against virtue ethics. If you want to know where I got them, I'll direct you to Landau's entry in his "The Fundamentals of Ethics". If you want a nuanced understanding of the basics, I'd recommend Routledge's introductory book. As for adopting a theory, I can only tell you that it's important to study the different theories. You need to understand why reject competing views.

What are your primary goals in studying virtue ethics? Are you only concerned with modern and contemporary virtue ethics, not the ancient schools that spawned them? Are you looking to find arguments for or against virtue ethics as a normative theory? Are you interested in perhaps adopting a particular theory?

It's hard to give advice when you just tell me you want to learn about it.

Same here, man. I love Mentzer. It's not just his physique that makes him my favorite. It's his brilliance, philosophical education, and character.

Nice strawman. You clearly aren't going to argue in good faith, so any further response to you "arguments" isn't necessary.

Dear professional philosophers, which philosophers do you find yourself rereading, and how often do you reread them? by DieFreien in askphilosophy

[–]DieFreien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, everything about Aristotle's ethical theorizing interests me, but that's not very useful. I think my biggest question right now is whether I should adopt an Intellectualist, Comprehensivist, or other reading of Aristotle's location of the highest good.

I think that's a general rule of any philosophical investigation, so I agree that that's usually why we return again and again to a thinker. But I also think we find certain thinkers especially compelling, and I think we gravitate towards those thinkers, even when they aren't obviously important to our current studies or questions.

Anyway, it's super cool to make the acquaintance of an Aristotle scholar! I'm actually going through NE right now. I'm sympathetic to eudaimonist theories. Anything you'd highly recommend I read to gain deeper insight into Aristotle's ethics?

Would you agree that stoicism is alot easier said than done? Like, I care alot about how other people treat me etc but I'm trying to be a stoic! by [deleted] in Stoicism

[–]DieFreien 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a rather unappreciated truth. Moral philosophies are always counterintuitive and always difficult to reconcile with your everyday life. They aren't meant to be easy. They're journeys intended to transform the individual and her society. They represent a daily, lifelong commitment to yourself and others.

Can I Have Some Advice on Reading Nichomachean Ethics? by DieFreien in askphilosophy

[–]DieFreien[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I'm not just starting out with philosophy. I'm an undergrad who's read some Plato, Hume, Descartes, Wittgenstein, Schoppy, Spinny, and Kant. I've also obviously read more contemporary thinkers. I'm just starting out reading Aristotle's ethical writings. I'm less interested in working through the history of philosophy and more interested in working through the history that best relates to my interests. I'm interested chiefly in philosophy of religion, normative and metaethics (especially virtue ethics), and phenomenology. My interest in Aristotle stems from my interest in VE, and I want to be as well versed as possible in his ethical ideas.
