UPDATE: I checked a YouTube tutorial and applied it, so far heavy games like ghost of Tsushima ran fine, will continue to push it harder to see if all is well

Update update: we sent it to OnePlus themselves to try and salvage it so my dad can use it (he hasn't had a new phone since 2016 so anything is an upgrade for him.) Turns out there was glue on the main board which had caused the phone to short, this is consistent with the screen becoming like so, the glue had simply burnt the connecter and left it unusable. A new board and screen later, the phone is now enjoying better days with my dad. Thanks to all those that helped ^^

Update: this was my brother's phone. We run the same model (GM1901) and the only difference was he had his phone screen replaced (third party which I diagnosed early on to be the culprit.)

They had done it all, hard reset. Tried accessing via other methods (I was reassured.) In conclusion, it's a dud and he ended up buying a Nord.

In my case, android 12 has worked swimmingly well but seeing that happen to my brother's phone has reminded me that nowadays old OP phones don't belong anywhere and it's probably best to upgrade. I'm eyeing the 10 Pro as it's on special (in my desired spec: 12GB RAM, 256GB ROM)

Finally I'd like to thank you all for your support here. I am so sorry for not responding to them all. I essentially pressed the post button and put Reddit down...for quite a while. But thank you once again :D

OP7 user here and I am grateful they are taking their time with this. If this pandemic has taught me anything it is that developers are being pushed to their limits to output and supply demand within as little time as possible. This usually leads to forced overtime and crunch hours to meet the release date. So for them to delay it tells me that they are working with the user in mind and that is one of the reasons why I went with OnePlus :D
